Did Valve's CES thing happen?
Did Valve's CES thing happen?
Don't think so, I would've heard about it.
I'm sure as hell ready for a HL3DM. With ports of the HL1 classics like HL2DM did, of course (Datacore->Steamlab, for instance)! Oh man, we also need a CTF mode in HL3DM like OP4 had. Including a remake of CTF_Hairball :v:
I really need to get back into my FPS groove.
every valve employee has their own special 'developer' (if you will) version of steam they can use. A private one, essentially. If there is any episode 3 action it will be hidden on their secret steam profiles.

Asking here just to make sure: is that arctic landscape from Mossman's message? EDIT: looks like it's not
Asking here just to make sure: is that arctic landscape from Mossman's message?
Yeah, I saw that in the SDK too. I'm guessing it is.
Am I the only one hoping it doesn't take place in the arctic? Honestly I'm hoping for an oh-shit-it's-too-late scenario where the Combine already got the technology from the Borealis. Maybe used it to teleport the ship into City 17. I want City 17 back. Just imagine flying over City 17 and seeing a giant portal open up and a boat fly out it. And it's all snowy near the ship. Would be badass.
New settings are always fun. It's Valve, it's going to be OK. I mean they did well on the whole forrest atmosphere so I am sure they will do as fine on, let's say, an artic setting.
The only HL2 game not to feature C17 in some capacity so far is EP2. I'm kind of bored by it by now, and I think putting it in the arctic is a good way to shake things up.
I think HL3 should be Artic AND Combine Overworld... We deserve it for all the wait.

I think it's going to be very different from what people expect because Valve often tries the first idea, then goes 'nah its shit' and does something totally different. They often do that several times before arriving at the actual plot for the game We probably have to go to the Borealis, but apart from that anything could happen
Who else thinks Half-Life 3/Ep3 should introduce something new to the franchise/Valve games in general? Like, from a technical standpoint? I mean, Half-Life 2 was released when physics like it had weren't seen very often. Episode 1 introduced HDR to the franchise, EP2 improved on that and also introduced cinematic physics to the franchise. I think the next installment should introduce a bunch of new stuff, not just one more thing. But, one new thing would do, as long as it's noticeable. What do you guys think? EDIT: I think Episode 1 also introduced awesome particle effects to the franchise, did it not? The core was pretty amazing.
the "innovation" of Ep1 was to make Alyx a real "companion" to the player, that's what thry stated.

[editline]12th January 2012[/editline] I have a feeling Episode 3 will add.... Dynamic. Nothing else, just Dynamic.

FEATURE SHOWCASE: DYNAMIC. The feature is the word dynamic in game. It contorts dynamically.
Nothing else, just Dynamic.
Dynamic Dynamism?

Also, that was a shader effect, not a particle. What does Valve have in the way of weather? If the next installment puts us in the Arctic, some snow might be neat.
I want.... Dynamic snow :v: Speaking of which wouldnt gordon freeze to death? he never wears a helmet.
I wonder how the co-op will work out, I was thinking Gordon + Alyx but then I figured that wouldn't work out very well considering things like needing Alyx for cutscenes and fighting over who gets to be Gordon...
Y'know, I think I remember an earlier article that said Portal 2 was probably going to be Valve's last game with an isolated singleplayer experience. Being that the comments were made by a third party, namely GameTrailer TV's Geoff Keighly, there are doubts about any definites concerning the future of singleplayer Valve games. But if this is true, then it might mean that the next Half-Life (avoiding the naming controversialities apparent hereabouts) may be co-op based, though hopefully being that Valve's track record has been pretty good so far, means that Half-Life's shift to co-op won't be akin to FEAR's shift to co-op, meaning that Valve'll likely find some way to pull it off without too many hitches. Regardless, I keep on thinking that the first few minutes would pan out something like this; Gordon's lapsed into a coma, and during the many months of Freeman's inactivity the HEV is improved somewhat, maybe even intergrating the Gravity Gun into the suit itself. A week or two before Gordon wakes from the coma, Barney finally arrives at White Forest (or the Episode 2 closing sequence is retconned to include Barney in White Forest like it was probably meant to be). When Gordon wakes up, he finds out that Alyx took the helicopter to the Borealis on her own, and has to find his own way to the ship, probably using the Jalopy on a set of abandoned roads to the north of White Forest. If the next Half-Life does indeed have co-op, and Alyx leaves without you, Barney would be the logical choice for a co-op partner, though a Vortigaunt ally wouldn't be too bad either. Speaking of the Vorts, I really hope we get to see more of them and learn more about the "Vortessence". There's so much about the Half-Life universe that has yet to be expanded on, and yet we've not seen any of it for over 4 years. Frankly the whole delays and secrecy thing just isn't funny anymore; if anything it feels like a sick joke at best... Well, there's always hope for this year; after all it's gotta be revealed eventually, especially once CS:GO and Dota 2 have been launched. Unless of course they decide to expand on Portal and Left 4 Dead, though I don't think we've heard much on either except for the Portal 2 co-op expansion DLC, and I recall from ages back that there was some third-party campaign called Cold Stream being worked with. But other than that I can't say i've really heard much news from Valve lately; it almost seems like it's gone silent.
well i don't think they ever said what they meant by isolated maybe they meant "isolated in a research laboratory by a crazy AI"?
Valve is obviously noticing the increased amount of community predictions. They know that we are getting tired of waiting, and becoming quite restless. They probably know they have an expectation set almost as high as DNF's was (which failed, mostly because the game sucked, though). Don't worry guys, if Valve has held off for this long, it must be for good reason. This is the year.

They won't disappoint; they never do.
I remember when Gabe said that they have really good reasons about what is happening to episode 3 (needs loadsamonths and not talking about it). If Gabe says that, well, I guess that I can trust him.

If they're going to do snow, they'll probably make some combined particle effects.
Newell: I want to make sure that I don’t sound like I’m dismissing user’s issues, right? I get a ton of email everyday saying why aren’t you talking about Episode 3? And there are very good reasons why we’re not talking about Episode 3, which I can’t talk about yet, but I will.
http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696431/opening-the-valve-the-gabe-newell-interview/ oh

Also, if anyone is interested about what Valve said or did related to the next HL, you should read this thread. Yeah, it's really old, but not all of you know that thread, and theres always some interesting data about the next HL, like... potential new weapons and some stuff.
