I keep listening to the soundtrack from episode 2 and thinking "Dear God, how much they've grown since making HL1." I keep thinking about it and knowing that they want this next game to be their benchmark test of the century. They're not going to release anything about it, no matter how much pressure we put on them because they know that this isn't about perfection for the fans anymore, this is tantric obsession on a whole new level. This game has to be beyond revolutionary for them because it will test everything about them and their skills as game developers.

It's been 7 years since HL2,
look at the differences of graphics between Wolfenstein, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and then Wolfenstein next-gen.
The differences of graphics between Doom, Doom 3.
The differences of graphics between Quake 1, Quake 2, Quake 4.
I wonder really how much the graphics of HL3 will look real... HL2 Source was really amazing with the faceposer, etc etc... What about also the looks of the zombies, eh. I also hope the SMOD's popularity will give Valve ideas, such as including ultra-gore and gibs and stuff like that...
(on an off topic note, I also would really like to see a Soldier of Fortune 3 from Raven software (R.I.P...) with the GHOUL 3.0 and 100 points of dismemberment... their last game, Singularity, was just a giant melting-pot of 10 years of FPS... )

Just take a look at Portal 2 and CS:GO, that's pretty much the quality of EP3/HL3 I guess. It won't be far off.
