First off, I'm not a PC gamer. Second, I've never played any Deus Ex game (and that includes the leak), but I want to comment on reviewers and what they do.
It is idiocy to review games with such bias. Yes, these are good scores, but the bias I'm referring to involves comparing a game to another game instead of reviewing that game and scoring that game based on it's on merits and achieving what the company set out to do, which is, provide a fun experience for the user/gamer/customer.
Instead of comparing it to KZ3 when it comes to graphics, it would be better to talk about if the art style/art direction works to create a type of immersion, influences the story or adds to the element of storytelling and gameplay. The game can have the best graphics in the world, but if the gameplay is weak, and the story isn't compelling you simply have a pretty game. If you're going to ding for graphics, ding for technical issues like pop in's, screen tearing and inconsistency within models, poor animation and things like that. Don't just ding it because it doesn't look as good as "X".
Reviewers need to take a very simple approach and grade the game based on the level of expertise the company has achieved and how they applied that level of expertise to create a fun game that people will want to play. Focus on the controls, sound, graphics, story, gameplay of that game and if they have meet the basic requirements. You know if a game is clunky or not and you don't have to compare it to "X" to say this. You know if a games sound direction (the way the music is used to enhance the story, foley, sfx, soundtrack, mixing, dialog, etc) is good or not and there is no need to compare it to "X", and the same can be said for every other game.
In closing, I HATE first person games, but I've said I'm willing to give this a try because I like single player games with lengthy campaigns and good stories. So if I can let go of some of my preconceived notions, and I'm actually PAYING for the game, at LEAST a person getting a FREE copy of the game can do the same. Compare DX:HR to DX:HR and nothing else.
Oh my god. This is not funny. I just did the entire Hell's Kitchen mission again and they're still making me out to be evil.
Anna even told me I was "like my brother" when I popped out of the Battery Park kiosk and tranquilised everyone, something different from last time.
WHAT DID I DO WRONG? I didn't even touch a gun for fuck's sake! Is this supposed to happen?

oh well, I'm sure as hell not going back again a third time anyway
By that she means that you are a sissy like Paul. That man is the poster boy of anti-violence and puppies and flowers and stuff.

Yes. So why did she then proceed to recommend me for an assassination mission?
Paul's gay.
If you [sp]save him in Hell's Kitchen[/sp] he doesn't even talk to you after HK until the end of the game.

Actually, she is recommending you to be assassinated for being such a non-lethal pussie.
How the hell do you save him? I killed all the guards then ran out to kill the guys outside, yet he disappears.

Thine holy front door.
Just got the game and not sure what to think. I asked a friend if he had any new games and he showed me deus ex that he got for a fiver. He was on the Clinton castle part and gave up because it's to slow. (he's a gamer where all that matters to him is rushing in and killing everyone on sight.) He told me that it's not fair as there are a massive amount of people to kill and it's impossible to have enough ammo. I now relies he was killing UNATCO or whatever troops aswell as NSF. he gave it to me and I've just finished the hells kitchen part. How does what I've played so far compare with the rest of the game?
I've been thinking, I think the leathal/non leathal take down system would be better if there was a way to do something during the animation to make it so you don't lose a full battery chunk. Just seems silly to me that a big flashy aug takes as much energy to do as punching someone. So why not maybe have some kind of qte mechanic or something like the reload mechanic in gears where if you pass it, you don't lose energy during basic tskedowns? Would also make it so the animations are less disconnecting since you actually have to perform the action somewhat, or orchistraite it to the rythem for it to not take up energy. Harder situations like multi takedowna would requiere a better rythem to pass without losing energy.

To be honest, this is only half-right. If you put absolutely no comparisons in your review, then people reading the review with no proper foreknowledge of the game being reviewed won't really know what to expect from it. If you just say "Well I didn't like this game because it had this annoying part in it, it was tedious and boring" instead of saying something like "A section of the game had me doing X, and while it was an interesting concept, it wasn't exactly pulled off as well as Y or Z when they did a similar section themselves because, instead of Y's fluidity or Z's intensity, it ended up feeling like a tacky gimmick slapped on because it sounded like a neat concept", it won't be as relatable to the reader. I think this episode of that Extra Credits thing sums it up pretty well. Skip to 03:03 if you just want the bit I'm talking about.
The reason the Killzone 3 comparison is flawed is not because of the comparison itself, but the fact that they didn't compare the art style or general aesthetic beyond the graphics. Killzone 3 was a fairly uninspired war-torn shithole kind of aesthetic, while DX:HR has a pretty unique aesthetic inspired by things like Blade Runner, while having an identity of it's own, right down to the character models and clothing.
If the comparison read something like "While the engine's capabilities don't exactly match something like Killzone 3's, it's visual flare and original art style outclass Killzone 3 and most other games like it, and more than make up for it's engine faults.", then it would be fair.
As for the "Sci-fi CoD" part, I couldn't care less. They didn't compare the entire game to it, they simply compared the linearity of the two. CoD is a corridor shooter that might as well be on rails, while Fallout is a huge and expansive game with a large amount of areas that you can go to at any given time. Two opposite ends of the linearity spectrum, and DX:HR is more or less in the middle, with semi-open levels, multiple directions and ways to reach your objectives, and multiple ways to play, but it's not a fully open and expansive world like Fallout, nor is it a strictly linear corridor shooter like Call of Duty, whether this is a good thing or a bad thing in any way is mostly subjective.
The reason why they compared it to Call of Duty is because that's the most popular corridor shooter there is. It would be odd if they compared it to Medal of Honor, because that isn't very popular to begin with, so it's a pretty logical move to compare it with Call of Duty instead, especially considering the fact that Call of Duty is about as linear as a game can be, and that's what the comparison was meant to show: two opposite ends of the spectrum, and where the game fits in the spectrum. The only reason I can think of as to why people threw a shitfit about this comparison was "It's Call of Duty", which is incredibly stupid.
And yes, the comparison was dumbed down to be relatable for more people, that's the point. It's annoying, but it's how reviewers in magazines usually have to think.
Christ that was an overlong ramble, so to sum up: Comparisons are not bad. They can make an otherwise generic synopsis of a game into an actual review that can make otherwise uninformed people interested in the game due to relatability. The problem (in this case) is that reviewers have this bad habit of completely overlooking art design when talking about visual aesthetic, therefore thinking that graphics are the only thing that matters in the aesthetic, and therefore missing the point and harming the review overall.
And hating a fairly indirect comparison to Call of Duty just because it's Call of Duty is just silly.
...No, not even the summary made sense. Goddamn I'm bad at overreacting to trivial issues.
Well, just beat Deus Ex.

Should have done the effort for the Illuminati ending, which should have been the sole canonical one.

I was actually thinking about it, and a benevolent dictator doesn't seem so bad. I wanted to kill Bob Page with the Illuminati ending, but it's late and I was getting lazy. I'll get the Illuminati ending tomorrow. As for Tracer Tong, I don't see a point in listening to him. It sounds like it could screw over the world initially more than anything else.
Just began playing Deus Ex today, desperately dodging the spoilers
After rebinding half the keys (wtf semicolon reload), I found the game quite enjoyable. Found myself running around with the taser prod, tasing NSF, and then subsequently beating them down with a police baton.
also RUNNING 1920x1080 IN DX10. DOES IT MATTER? NO, BUT I'M RUNNING DEUS EX IN DX10.
Lightweight. Real men use DX11!
Made a wallpaper based on the PC Gamer cover art and thought some of you might like it. The grid design is based on the background from the Deus Ex website.

Collectors edition has that on the box :smug:
Official Xbox Magazine gave Deus Ex a 10/10
That sounds nice, but since it's the "Official" Xbox magazine, it's almost certainly run by microsoft, even if indirectly.
They'll want people to buy hot games like DX:HR for the :10bux:

But isn't the Collectors Edition just the Augmented Edition, with a different box and the figure of Adam? (And also costs £40 more)
