It isn't on a dedicated server - you join before game, get a role, and wait for the host to start. we could organize dates if anyone has the game
We should get a game going sometime, would work well with a client like teamspeak or mumble.
the problem would be the limited game scenarios? i know they say you can roll your own but right now, there doesn't seem to be a lot of canned Star Trek style situations to play

Wow, sounds like my dream game!
Played the demo with a few friends over a voicechat yesterday and it was kind of fun but I don't think I would spend $40 on it. You should still give it a try, even if you play with friends online.

Forgot to tell you guys, for a few more days you can get it for $30 by using the coupon code PENNYARCADE. That's only $5 each.
I have met the guy who created this game a few years ago at a LAN party, he had several netbooks setup to show it off. It's come a long way since then, and the addition of "Game Master" adds a D&D story telling aspect which is very cool. We had 15 people (3 ships) playing 2 weekeneds ago and it was a blast, well worth the price.

The Gamemaster position is hard as balls to play, though.
Setting something like that up is hard though, like, really hard.

I mean the game is fun but you need people who really do want to play it and probably not over a voicechat. I imagine it being tons of more fun if you have people sitting around you.

PC gamer did an article on this a few months ago, was a pretty enjoyable read.
My crew has been training up and running harder missions; so far we don't play with enough people to have consistent and mutually exclusive roles, but I've mainly been doing weapons and engineering, and I'm getting pretty efficient at using those two stations together. Whenever the captain/science officer guy says "fire at will," he immediately follows it up with "okay, so did you just take all power from scanners, or are they all dead already?"
I'd advise not doing weapons AND engineering (or weapons and helm, or helm and engineering) because those three are the main focus ones if you double up go like comms and helm or something easy; you don't even NEED science most of the time unless you're a jump type ship.
Damn, I would love to play this but I don't have any IRL friend that are nerdy enough for this, new headphones without mod so can't do hamachi with steam buds. Fuck
Captain: Where are the faggots? Science: THERES TWENTY OF THEM TO OUR LEFT HOLY SHIT THEY'RE HUGE Captain: Okay, Marc, turn left Helm: What? Why? Captain: Just do it Marc Captain: Dave, turn off the life support and make the shields better, turn on the lasers, and ready the flying dick tubes. Weapons, load two homing dicks and a nuclear dickbomb. Weapons: *laughing* *arms three dicknukes* Laser Strength A is the best right? Science: They're weakest against strength C. Weapons: What? That makes no sense, leave the weapons to the weapons guy, making it A, wait, how the shit do I aim? Captain: Dave, send the repair fags to the middle, keep them near the sides so they get to the damage quicker. Engineering: Alex, the repair crews are all dead. You turned off life support. Captain: ...Huh, alright then, you're promoted to official ship priest, make peace with god for us. [Battle ensues, everyone is yelling over each other, main screen is off, two of three ships are destroyed, the third is completely disabled other than comms] Captain: Okay guys, good job, I think we're winning, we might be able to get them to surrender now. [Last ship is promptly blown to pieces] Comms: *screams* Science: WHAT THE FUCK MAN Captain: *deep sigh* Captain: Okay guys, calm down, it's just a game Engineering: NO, FUCK YOU, IF YOU GUYS AREN'T GOING TO LEARN TO PLAY THE DAMN THING THEN I'M NOT COMING ANYMORE Captain: Dude, relax Comms: *throws wireless mouse at Engineering and storms out* Helm: Wait, the helm controls the ship?
I figure this might be more accurate.

Science and comms we always put together, since you never need them at the exact same time. I don't like to double helm with anything ever though, since not being able to... You know... MOVE, at all times, is a pretty big disadvantage. As for the usefulness of science, you need it pretty much all the time for setting phaser frequency and identifying which targets have asymmetrical shields and such.
Actually already have a full crew together and are planning to play friday June 15th. Probly around 9:30pm mountain time. If anyone else could get a crew together we could have our comms officers in a skype call with eachother.
I had to share this with my friend. She absolutely LOVES Star Trek, to unhealthy levels. Which is to say she goes to Star Trek conventions and Comicon every chance she can in her Science officer uniform, dressed up as a Vulcan. She's even gone to her astronomy and physics classes in said getup as well. What's worse is no one thought it unusual. I suggested she share it with her astronomy club, who are all Trekkies - between them, they could easily afford the game, and knowing her, she would fall in love with the game so fast it wouldn't even be funny.
-snap-
Just got five people together in the same room, few minor network issues but alot of fun. Doubled up the comms and science, no problem at all. Each player switched stations every mission so we had a new captain every time.
Anyone fancy collaborating to pay for and play the game?
Bumping this bad boy, because I finally decided to give it a go at my school with some friends and we now have a dedicated group for this. It's freaking amazing. Also bumped because it would be sad if people forgot about this game, it's too amazing to die.
we just had an awesome session this night. We set up a command center in one of the classrooms and used a projector for the main screen. It was freaking epic. Nukes were fired. Side quests were completed. Space monsters were pissed off. Ships were blown to bits. All in all, a good night.
Thank god someone else bumped this, was planning on doing it. At school, me and my mates commandeered an IT classroom after school, loaded up a USB with the 2.0 version and put it on 6 computers, one with a projector. Fantastic game that night.
I infrequently play this with a few friends online, get everyone to run the game twice with one of the sessions just displaying the main screen - we have a blast, but everyone knows we're missing out on the atmosphere. Some mission suggestions wouldn't go amiss!
Me and a friend played, he took the helm and I starting giving directions in units of Pi. We're both math kinda people so it was pretty funny, especially when we got a third and he hadn't the unit circle memorized... Me: Helmsman, set a course on 1/3 pi, maximum warp. Him: What? Me: 1/3 pi, maximum warp. Him: Hold on let me get my unit circle. Me and other friend:...
