I'd rather see them ditch the experience for kills system altogether and just give you rewards for doing the objectives, would rather see a zombie and think, "Oh fuck a zombie" rather than "Oh sweet, +20 exp".
Kinda hard to take on a whole horde. You wouldn't be "Oh fuck a zombie" because its really just one zombie. If they made it hard to kill one zombie then hordes would be overpowered as fuck and you would spend more time running than actually combating.
I personally like this idea of a arcady style (dead rising like) fps zombie game, they obviously intended for it not to be a scary game where you just want to run and escape but a game where you want to kill lots of zombies in numerous fun ways. If you want one of those scary games you'll just have to wait. There's already a fare share of scary dark zombie games out there for your pleasure.

How does health work? Do you apply bandages or eat stuff when hurt? Status effects?
Doubt it'll be hard.
When I say hard to take on a horde I mean if the zombies were a big enough threat individually and from the looks of it they aren't right now. At least not when you level up.
Seriously guys, people aren't upset over "hurr durr da AK's bolt doesnt go back," everyone is upset over the fact that we were promised a realistic, tragic and pants shitting zombie game with an amazing damage system all packed into a sandbox. And instead we get an MMO hud, bad animations, linear quests, and consolitis. The only reason I am buying this game now is because of the coop. Dead Island promised a lot and from this trailer it didn't really seem to show any of it. There are a lot of other legendary sequels coming out this year and unless Dead Island steps up and shows it brought what it promised to the table with another gameplay video, I'm not getting it over Deus Ex HR, DNF, or any other amazing titles coming out soon.
I would like to know why the chinese chick is still wearing heels. And running in heels. And kicking people over in heels.
I would like to know why the chinese chick is still wearing heels. And running in heels. Hilarious.
I would like to know why the chinese chick is still wearing heels. And running in heels. And kicking people over in heels.
I'm not complaining. :q:
Not sure what the complaints are about. The AK animations are pretty horrid but everything else seemed good. Hopefully they don't skimp on the RPG elements, though. I hope free roaming actually means free roaming, and not just "there's a bunch of linear paths scattered all over the place."
Yeah, C4 is generally a common term for explosives (though I know it's not, that's just what it's used for) and a lot easier to say than "homemade explosive" It's also ridiculous how some people are nitpicking about commentary on an early gameplay video. Do I really need to explain what's fucking stupid about that?
I like how people are saying this is an early gameplay video when the game goes gold in 2 months lol It's not early, this is pretty much final bar a few obvious bugs. They just haven't decided to show much until now.

Why does every upcoming game get swarmed with "It's not exactly what I wanted, THEREFORE I AM BEING CHEATED" mentality? I defy any of you to find one instance of the developers promising, pledging, or otherwise committing to making a "scary, realistic, zombie game with minimal HUD." Ugh.

The way the HUD looks is quite annoying for me, with all that xp stuff popping up while you play.
While the HUD could use some work, guys, please understand the fact that realism is not at all always fun. If they made it super realistic everyone would just think its a shit game- it would be difficult as fuck, and judging by the gameplay, they weren't really going for realism, they were probably going for FPS Zombie Killing Sandbox game or around that level.
I don't see the big deal about the hud, it doesn't mean the game won't be emotional or anything like that, it's a fucking hud.
I don't see the big deal about the hud, it doesn't mean the game won't be emotional or anything like that, it's a fucking hud.
True, but considering you'll be seeing the HUD pretty much the entire game, it's pretty easy to see why people will make it a big deal if it's ugly. People will get used to it either way.
I do hope the damage floaters can be turned off, though. We already have health bars on the zombies, this seems like enough.
Have to agree, the devs never promised anything. Everyone assumed based on the trailers.
Well, usually the trailer gives you an idea of what the game is like. This trailer had two things in common with the actual game: 1. There are zombies 2. There are makeshift weapons
If they made it super realistic everyone would just think its a shit game
Uh, bullshit? I'd probably love it- finally, a difficult, unforgiving zombie game as opposed to the reams of arcadey zombie games on the market. You're right in saying that realism does not equal fun, but then you go and ruin it by apparently assuming that realism equals not fun. [editline]26th May 2011[/editline]
I was talking about the game having unrealistic weapons etc. It's more fun to use a electric machete and throw c4 cover knifes (tough I don't think it was C4) then run around with some kitchen knife you quickly grabbed because of it being hard to find weapons, because tourist resorts usually don't have them.
Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I honestly would enjoy a game in which you have to scrounge for supplies, where a kitchen knife might be all you can arm yourself with on short notice, and taking on one zombie is a dangerous and risky proposition- let alone a horde. I think it's disappointing that no games like this exist. It's not like people hated on Condemned because you couldn't strap dynamite to your two-by-four. It was a game where individual enemies were tough and strong enough to be dangerous one-on-one, and something as mundane as a fire axe was the holy grail of weapons. In fact, the sequel was rated poorly because, among other reasons, it dismissed these very mundane elements and went for assault rifles. There's no reason why a zombie game with the same style as Condemned should be not fun, and the early descriptions of Dead Island (plus the trailer) made it seem like it would fill that niche. Besides, I don't think it's unreasonable to take a CGI trailer as some indicator of the game's style. If the trailer consisted of the dad rampaging through a horde of the undead with a minigun while Invaders Must Die blares in the background, we'd probably have a very different idea of the sort of game to expect.
Even if nobody is impressed with the fact that it isnt ultra realistic and that you would have to fight for your life to survive, theres no doubting that this game is going to be really fun online.
Even if nobody is impressed with the fact that it isnt ultra realistic and that you would have to fight for your life to survive, theres no doubting that this game is going to be really fun online.
I don't doubt that it will be fun- I've had plenty of fun with Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising, both of which are pretty far from realism. I'm just a little disappointed that Dead Island is taking the same approach and not breaking new ground for the zombie genre, which was what the trailer and early previews suggested. I read that it was going to have an advanced damage model and focus on melee weapons and scavenging rather than firearms, and those traits immediately suggested to me a Condemned-esque survival game.
What it immediately looks like to me is a cross between Dead Rising and Far Cry 2. +Awesome first-person perspective (combat, vehicles, getting knocked down etc) +tons of weapons +Leveling up/RPG-style ability unlocking +Very nice-looking open world, great environments -Immersion -Realism Which doesn't sound too bad to me.
Looks incredibly unpolished; i know they have 2 months till release, but i have a feeling this game is going to be pretty disappointing (awful hud, combat doesn't look satisfying, bad animations)
Combat looked fine to me. Yeah, when the player was just stabbing indiscriminately it looked like they weren't doing much--because they weren't. If you look closely at the earlier parts of the video where they're actually doing careful swings with the bat, you can spot some broken arms/legs.
Looks incredibly unpolished; i know they have 2 months till release, but i have a feeling this game is going to be pretty disappointing (awful hud, combat doesn't look satisfying, bad animations)
Its pretty common to just get base up and running, then start heavily polishing at the end. I wouldn't be surprised to see a complete overhaul of many of the things people are complaining about, look at the difference between L4D at E3 2008 and its release a few months later. (Also, 2 months is a pretty long time.)

Before they introduced those gimmicky weapons. Thats all I have to cry about, those damn weapons. I hate Dead Rising, and I dont want this shit to carry over to any other games. You dont have to use the "gimmicky" weapons they just add humour to the game which wont make it any less scary or fun. (assuming you also think the same about dead island)
