I like them. Better than just having a bunch of "hardcore badasses" with no depth.
I really hope you can obtain nonlethal gear in-game. Would be stupid as shit to be able to lug around an armory full of automatic assault weaponry and explosive electrified throwing knives, but never once find a single bean-bag shotgun, pepper spray canister, or tazer.

Dead Island managed to get through the classification board in Australia with an MA15+ rating(not surprising) and no censorship.
