It's a complete rip of borderlands. Rather than just akward gunplay, they've replaced it with akward gunplay and akward melee weapons. The leveling system is exactly the same, and even incorporates the same three branch skill tree.
The zombies are slow. The combat is slow. The animations are STILL terrible, and clearly no effort has been put into those at all (seriously, who needs emotion during a zombie apocalypse). Borderlands had all of these problems, except for certain bosses/enemies. I guess that could apply to "fast" special zombies in Dead Island
There's NO PENALTY when you die, because you respawn in the same location with all of your weapons... so survival in a zombie game apparently doesn't matter.
Why is being reminded of Borderlands a bad thing when deciding whether or not to preorder this game? Borderlands was nearly impossible to play once by yourself, and was fun for maybe one play through with a group of four. I bought Borderlands for about 5$ when it was on sale. I know I would have regretted purchasing it for full price, and everything I've seen about Dead Island so far is telling me to stay away from the game.
I don't see why any game would want to rip off Borderlands. Borderlands sucked.
Therein lies the issue laddie.
Whoa man, slow down with those opinions.
It looks like Borderlands?
Borderlands is a futuristic shooter set on a distant planet, with lots of humour, millions of weapons and a bad story. I can't see how it resembles a zombie survival game with a deep emphasis on melee combat, set on an island here on earth, with a quite good-looking weapon crafting system.
DI hasn't even been released yet, and the only things that resembles Borderlands are the co-op, the number of characters and the fact that it's a bit of an RPG. That and the big damage/XP numbers that fly around when you kill something, and you can disable those.
If Dead Island looks like Borderlands I'm very surprised, because I've totally missed that. I'm also surprised in a positive way, as Borderlands was and still is one of my favorite games ever.
I really don't understand what in Borderlands makes people think that their opinion is fact. It's seriously the only game that I never see a conversation without someone being a tool in.
I don't get it, what are you guys arguing over?
Can't make myself read through 20 posts of stupid arguments and idiotic comments that probably don't have anything at all to do with Dead Island.
Wake up, see 127 new posts in thread, all a bunch of arguing.
Someone in this thread said a long time ago "Every time I come in this thread something stupid happens." - it's still applicable.
Basically what I got from all of this is people think it's shit because it looks like Borderlands and nobody is allowed to express an opinion.
Okay how about we all wait to see what it's like when it comes out.

Ha! Found it.
I was excited to read what everyone had said when I saw 40+ new post.
Very disappointed at a shitstorm about how two co-op firstperson RPG's have similar aspects of gameplay. Come on guys.
Yeah, I came back after an hour or two after a break, just to see like 80 new posts
I thought something very nice or at least interesting must've happened, maybe a new trailer, a leak, or maybe even a demo!
Turned out it was 40 new posts about Borderlands and 40 new posts about what people thought about other people because they had a different opinion
In an effort to get back to Dead Island conversation, does anyone know how it'll work if you want to play online with someone but you have the same character?
In an effort to get back to Dead Island conversation, does anyone know how it'll work if you want to play online with someone but you have the same character?
I think the developers just shat themselves.
I have no idea.

I believe it will just use the same model like some other games out there that I'm not going to list for reasons to keep the shit-storms down.
It would be better if you could customize small features of your character like clothes and glasses.
I heard somwhere that you can have multiples of the same characters but I forgot where.

That's very good news to me! Brings down my dislike towards the whole "preset" character thing.
I hate it so much that I want to play the logan character with the skill tree from the weapon or blunts dude/girl.
I don't want some stupid kind of throwing skill tree... I also don't want to be an asshole type of black man or some stupid bitch, why can't we just choose the model and the skill tree by ourselves?
I could not bare to play as a girl, it would instantly take me out of the game. Normal and white would undoubtly be the favorite character in this game, but see what they made out of that! A dude throwing knives paddles and boomerangs and whatever else there is.
Is it bad if I pirate this game before buying it for the PC so I know if I can run it acceptably so I don't waste my money like I did for Just Cause 2. That is if there won't be a demo. I'm going to buy this either way, just depends if it's for the PC or PS3.
You can still use any kind of weapon, you just wont get the most out of it because you don't specialize in it.

And that would make me angry the whole time knowing that I could have choosen a character more fitting :saddowns:
Maybe I play as the big black dude because throwing stuff don't looks like alot of fun, I want to combat be close or choose firearms instead.

Sounds reasonable. Just be an asshole and don't seed the torrent afterwards, because everyone else won't have such an honest morality about it.
The fact that you're asking is pretty awesome to me. :v:
So if you like borderlands, you will like this game. You guys cant say it doesnt have similar elements (but hello, other games do have the same RPG elements, which is why its an RPG).
If you dont like borderlands/rpgs then you wont like this game. Its plain and simple.
I like it because its a 4 player coop RPG, i like all of those things about it. I plan on playing with some friends and having a good time. I liked borderlands (however only when i played with other people) but thats the fun of it, being coop. I like Dead Rising, that game wasnt very hard and i still enjoyed it (im talking about #2, we can all agree #1 was fucking difficult). It also looks very pretty and varied environment, a lot better than borderlands. Borderlands was a little lacking in the environment, but Dead Island is looking pretty cool.
I preordered it for $30 and im happy with that. But until we actually play the game our OWN way, we wont know if we enjoy it or not. This is all speculation by a (lets admit it) shitty player that got his hands on it early. He sucks and im sure me and my friends will have a lot more fun with it.
If you dont like it fine, but instead of insulting it and eachother, how about we explain what we like and not like about it. The point of this thread is to talk about dead island. Doesnt matter if you like it or not.

If you couldn't run Just Cause 2, I kind of doubt you'll be running this game. (Also, there was a demo for JC2... so yeah.)

one of my friends is gonna do it because hes not sure if his comp can handle it. Its pretty smart.
Stop comparing this game to Borderlands.
Borderlands was a weak RPG with little to no effort done in the level design. It was all just accepting a quest to go to a random area and kill randomly placed NPCs. Dead Island looks like it actually has level design, mission structure, and a story to support its path.
I really dislike the fact that they put a rapper into it as the black guy. If there was any way for me to avoid a character, it'd be because he's a rapper that needs to pay child support.
What the christ. Louis was done right, Rochelle, even coach. But fuck.
This isn't even a race thing. I'm not white. Just, hnnngg. I want normal people damn it. They don't even seem to have as much personality as their wacky backgrounds would suggest.

But I liked Borderlands...
(though yeah the level design was unforgivably poor at times, and the game world felt... 'dead' in a lot of ways.)

Plus this seems to have more dialogue which helps.

It did on the PC? godfuck i'm retarded
I'm able to run Mass Effect 2, Farcry 2 on High, and a couple other games that are 2008-2009 on high, so I'm assuming I should atleast be able to run this game on Low decently. Especially since they said it's not going to be a port which (should) mean, it's not gonna be an unoptimized mess of a game.
Does somebody have the skilltree of the other 3 characters? I am definitly not picking logan, throwing shit aint fun when I can throw shotgun bullets at them.. so I just blunt them to death with that black dudes big dick and his blunt weapon skills.
