It's indifferent for me, I know R* will deliver.
With the amount of detail that went into making just Liberty City in IV, it would take ages to make three cities just as detailed, and the countryside as well. So it's kind of expected that it's just Los Santos.

Maybe due to the overal increase in scale the countryside cities will be larger, based on smaller southern Californian cities like Longbeach.
Also you are forgetting that the major part of creation is making the engine. Now they have used the same engine and they can just take a lot of stuff from previous games.
so it's just los santos? how lame.
so it's just los santos? how lame.
Yep that means no fun traveling
Try imagining the reaction of the news media when they find out a major game allows people to take control of an Arab killing police officers by the truckload and causing all sorts of havoc.
A.K.A. Fox News
I hope they include things like Angel Pine and the small towns outside of Los Santos.
Well they have had 4 years and LA Noire basically finished Los Santos for them apart from the modern buildings
Not even.
So this would mean no deserts right?
sounds like the areas from san andreas will still kinda be in, those oil rigs and shit for example (from desert area) they did say "los santos AND surrounding areas" and they've probably made los santos HUGE, compare gta 3's liberty city to gta 4's liberty city, expect same kind of thing I guess I really feel like re-playing gta 3 and vice city now...
Yeah we have no idea how big the surrounding areas actually are. Could be massive for all we know.
Eh I don't know about it being it only in Los Santos. The shot with the hookers and the blackjack bar looks like something from a desert. I will still be satisfied though.
Why would it be set in just Los Santos that on its own would be tiny. Even if its not all of San Andreas, which is unlikely, then there would be other places. Personally I would like to see all of San Andreas and some more of the surrounding area.
The desert would probably be the Mojave desert and surrounding area, there's wind farms there too.
So it's Los Santos only, but it's still the largest? I'm ok with this.
Los Santos and the surrounding hills are pretty large places in their own right. If R* do what they did to LC with GTA IV, then they will be even bigger than the San Andreas equivalents.

Rockstar Games Announces Grand Theft Auto V Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., is very proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto V is in full development. Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created. “Grand Theft Auto V is another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We are incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans.” A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California. Rockstar Games pioneered the open world genre with the Grand Theft Auto series, one of the most successful entertainment properties of all time. With more than 114 million copies sold-in worldwide, Grand Theft Auto games have helped propel video games into the cultural mainstream. Grand Theft Auto V is the follow up to 2008′s record-breaking, critically-acclaimed Grand Theft Auto IV. Rockstar Games continued its tradition of award-winning open world games with the 2010 blockbuster Western, Red Dead Redemption, and the groundbreaking detective thriller L.A. Noire in 2011. Late? Anyway, was Los Santos the entire map of SA we had or just a town in SA? I can't remember
Look how his shirt is positioned in frame. Advertising a specific gym, Gyms are clearly confirmed as back guys. It'd be cool if they would pull off the same kind of size as San Andreas, but those pesky consoles are always in the way of progress.
Limitations to the game world have nothing to do with consoles. It is all in the engine, if games such as Fallout 3 (which is a pretty large game world) can run on consoles pretty well, then there isn't much reason for San Andreas sized worlds to be possible. It's all about optimizing resources, making sure only things that will be seen soon are in memory, rather than large areas, it might mean an increase in loading, but it is possible. Plus there is the whole thing of storing a world that large and detailed in a non-volatile way. Other than the PS3 and PC, no console formats can store great than around 8GB on one piece of storage media.
I hope rockstar puts in a shit load of cheat codes like they did for SA. I want pedestrian riots.
If their only doing Los Santos, then I wonder how you will unlock parts of the map? Unless they don't plan on locking you out of any areas from the start. I really do hope the map is really big though. I love having to drive around for ages to get to places.
I still want to drive off Mt. Chiliad...
rockstar hasnt made a GTA thats been disappointing yet so i have high hopes
I hope rockstar puts in a shit load of cheat codes like they did for SA. I want pedestrian riots.
I remeember how there was the cheat where citizens had weapons and you would just deathmatch between them.
From the rockstar website:
I hope that climbing the moutains with girlfriend can camp ,find more animals ,and eat their meat with friends !!!!!!!!!!! PLZ!!!!!!!
What the fuck is the point of that? I thought this is GTA, not fucking sims?
From the rockstar website: What the fuck is the point of that? But the whole relationship/friendship thing didn't add much to the game imo.

Most of this is bullshit, but they are definitely onto something with the recession theme. The theme is obviously money and they are showing the contrast between rich and poor in the trailer. There's not way that's just a coincidence.
I wonder if they'll make it into an island like previous GTA or just cut off the map with impassable landscape like in Red Dead. I don't think this setting would work as an island.
