After a few hours of playing, I have to say this game is a game of fuckall. That, or I have terrible aim, but the whole game feels like one of those games where the weapons are based on "The one good weapon that you must use or you will fall behind or take this alternative which does 1 damage per hit... Or buy the DLC". The good weapons are the explosives, but they never hit the target 90 percent of the time. Same could be said about frag grenades. You can never really get a kill with it since everyone's skiing around toward the flag or some other place. The other weapons like the rifle and the pistol are terribly under-powered also, and a waste of three mags. Now, the XP/Coin/Whateverthefug system is even terrible. If you get, say, 13 kills, you only get 50 tokens and if you buy the booster DLC you can get more tokens, and by more, I mean a shit ton more. And if you're a "I bought a booster" guy, then you pretty much are going to be king of the team no matter what.
Other than that, skiing is fun.
Shazbot!
Edit:
Yeah, probably have bad aim
I got into the Beta, sweet, but my only problem is... I can barely run the game on the lowest settings :v:

Pretty much this. Can't fault a game for having a learning curve, can you?

As my rating indicates, I disagree. The game affords more choices to players that pay for it (in currency or in time-played) but it doesn't go so far as to make it "play to win". Explosive weapons like the Spinfusor are popular (and hence you'll die from them more regularly) but they aren't overpowered. So called "hit-scan" weapons are just as effective in the right hands and are a little easier to use in-flight. Grenades are useful indoors. The money you spend on the game saves you from having to devote hundreds of hours to unlocking the classes but it isn't a "win" button.
An example of a pay-to-win game would be League-of-Legends. You do get a rotating roster of free characters to use but the shear quantity of champions guarantees that some will be overpowered. It's also much harder to build up familiarity with a champion you like if you can only play it for 2 weeks at a time before the roster shifts. I believe they also have some kind of rune system that further benefits paying members. Paying for characters/items in LoL confers you a significant competitive advantage that doesn't compare to the increased choice that you get for paying in Tribes.
My experience thus far with Tribes: Ascend has been strangely positive; I'm not typically a competitive gamer and despise having to memorize strategies to best my opponents but the balance of the game has really impressed me. Certain moments can feel unfair (like having an enemy team camp your generator) but I've yet to find a truly overpowered weapon or class. Anecdotal? Sure, I'll admit that. If I had one complaint it would be poor map design.
i never played tribes in my life. well, i've played tribes 2 for 10 minutes. and i am doing pretty well in this game usually being 6 on the scoreboard of my team.
now, am i so good or this game is not demanding.

Sure it might be hard to hit something, but that just makes it all the more rewarding when you do!
This game has a high skill ceiling so unfortunately as a beginner getting thrashed might be something you have to deal with.
As for being 'pay to win', soldier and ranger (the starting classes) are one of the best in the game and for the most part easiest to play. (FYI the spinfusor is 100% accurate so missing is down to poor aim)
You can check out those other classes in a roam-the-maps training match, and some guy on the forums has put together a list of how much damage each gun does - you should be able to tell quite quickly that they are by no means overpowered.

Just an fyi, League Of Legends uses the same system as tribes, you win games and get ip (about 100-200 per win and about 40+ for a loss) champions can cost up to 6300 ip, the free week champions are there so you can try things before you buy them, and runes can only be bought with ip (the stuff you earn through playing) which you cannot buy (although you can get boosters to increase the amount you earn)
The money making system is called RP, you can use it to both buy champions and skins, although it's highly recommended you buy champions with ip and use any rp for skins (since rp is the only way to unlock skins)
It is in no way pay-to-win, it can take absolutely ages to get every champion but that's simply due to the large number of them (currently 86 I think)
The system is exactly the same as tribes as far as unlocking new stuff goes, you only pay to get them instantly and there is no advantage in game from paying

um LoL isn't pay to win
Are they ever going to have a server browser? I'm getting bad ping on every server.
This game is sooooo good, My only problem is that it's only me that tries to repair stuff (I don't mind getting all the points for repairing but having no turrets by flag is really annoying)

LoL is very far from pay to win. The only currency you buy runes with is IP, which you get from playing the game, not by buying RP(the point you get off of cards and the like.) And the free weeks let you try out some champs you might want so you can start working toward them if they're expensive. Even so, it's a damn sight easier to earn 6300 IP in LoL than it is to earn even 1800 tokens in tribes. I'd definitely say Tribes at the moment is MUCH more pay to win than LoL, but just by a little because nether of them are at all.
The only difference really is that boosts and the like would help much more in tribes in my opinion, because it's so much harder to earn a decent amount of tokens for one of the classes.
LOADSA KEYS!! well really only four
By the way, what class do you personally like the most? I play soldier mostly, but raider looks fun!

I wish missiles from the sabre launcher didn't do 90 degree or higher turns instantly

It's all about soldier! Gain speed, sneak up behind whizzing enemies, hit them once at close range then jump over them and hit them again to finish them off. God I love the spinfusor. As an aside, Ascend is wonderful, very much looking forward to the end-product.
I melee'd someone about four times and they finally died.
Powerful space armor, right?
Are they ever going to have a server browser? I'm getting bad ping on every server.
Yes, it's only closed beta atm so being that no one else can run servers except Hi-Res yet a server browser would be redundant
Goddamn this looks good.
P.s what's with Shazbot?
I suppose I must withdraw my comment regarding League of Legends. A friend of mine has spent in excess of $600 on LoL so I assumed spending money afforded players a significant competitive advantage.
I still stand by my comment that Tribes isn't pay-to-win.
In a match where there is a guy raging about heavies, and how only "noob fags" play them as they you can "get kills with no skill"
I was the target of the raging. I was in my base as a Juggernaut, and someone had handed the flag off to me. I had survivalist on (everytime I picked up an ammo pack I would get 480 health), as well as a teammate helping me. The people just came in one by one, and me and the ranger picked them off one by one.

Thanks bro!
Just did my first TDM match, have only played CTF so far. How come the enemy team always manages to hold the flag for what seems like ages but my team (including me) seems to be surrounded by enemies once they have the flag for more than a second? :v:

Nvm, I entered the key then nothing really happens, may just be a dud or already used.

Sucks anyway, being a DOTA clone.
I still don't get the "shazbot" thing. Explain?
And it's gone!

It's just a pseudo-swear, like smeg in Red Dwarf.

Okay all it's players must be people who can't afford Warcraft III or something then

Thanks for the key, that was very generous of you. I must ask if there a friends list system that is in the beta yet or not? I would like to at least play with someone including the person who gave me a key to begin with.
