What settings are you running that on..?
In the last few patches it's REALLY been optimized. It runs fantastic now

In Sectors like Siezewell and Kingdom's End you can notice a framerate hit because of the sheer number of shit. But where it would run 20 frames per second before, it runs 40+ now

4Gigs of RAM
HD 5750 w/ 1gig VRAM
Like I said, the last few patches have fucking rocked in the optimization department. Remember when you hit someone in combat and it would slow you down, so you'd intentionally not use high rate of fire weapons? Gone. Stations seem to have Levels of Detail now that really REALLY help, and they even fixed the game getting sluggish as you play it over many many hours
I played with No Anti Aliasing or Anisotropic Filtering and on 1680X1050 before and got half the performance then as I do now with the above settings

I traded with a guy and got the X3 Goldbox. I have no idea how to do anything in Terran Conflict though. Should I just play Albion Prelude instead?
Maybe it's because people [I]were[/I] children when they last played Duke Nukem and remember it being more adult.

They're the same game really. It's been the same since X3 Reunion. But with each one comes more features, more polish. If you want to follow the story then Albion Prelude is probably your best bet since it's a build up to Rebirth's story. But you can play a custom start like Humble Merchant which is no plot and full on sandbox mode
