I think nations is just a natural evolution of the server. The more established players decided it was a good idea and ran with it. It wasn't "officially" recognized until a few days ago. While agree there is no point in going crazy with territory I personally don't see anything wrong with rise of factions. And just for the sake of firsts! I was the first one to come up with the idea of a nation.
I think what would make this whole nations thing better is if the kingdoms weren't literally bordered right next to the other countries. I feel like there should be a neutral border at least in between each country. This would cut back on current country size and it would open up a lot more neutral land. However, I'd say if people are asking to be whitelisted, come on, and don't see where these borders are, there are going to be problems. I think if we are going to really make this a thing, we need some sort of factions plugin. Right now if you are walking around without a map in your face, you'll have no idea where you are and for potential new players, that is not a good thing at all.

What possible purpose would it serve? Let's simply give the new players lots of neutral territory somewhere and that's it.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the spawn area at this point is getting pretty picked clean of resources, but traveling that much without food or anything more than stone tools may not be fun for them. Nor would wandering and finding nothing but claimed land. Maybe I'm just making some assumptions here, but I've played on a bunch of servers with factions before and this alone can be very irritating.

I agree that having a factions plugin would really help with the borders etc etc, but I honestly don't want to add any form of plugins to control that kind of stuff. this is still a vanilla server, and a factions plugin is one of those plugins I feel really takes away from that. I'm gonna stay with what I feel should be done, and that is to shrink the borders for those nations who are obviously not going to take use of it all.
Yeah no plugin please, that whole "power to claim land" thing is really arbitrary and you need like 20 people to control a decent space This isn't really a "factions" server per se since there's no plugin, people just naturally gravitated towards teaming up and it's cool when the server evolves naturally
It seems that as long as the new player isn't disrupting anything, they can settle anywhere they want- nation or not. The large pieces of land some nations aren't utilizing could be settled in by newcomers, and I'm sure most nation owners wouldn't drive them from there land or impose a lengthy list of restrictions on them. As for borders, a gap inbetween "claimed" locations would be useful as a buffer zone so that a nation needs to expand a tiny bit (for a big farm, or more housing) and still not protrude into another nations land.
I agree with magic. I'ts the server norm to not allow cobble crap castles or dirt shacks. And I'm ok with people building in my borders as long as they contribute.

I'm personally fine with anybody simply coming into my country and building stuff, as long as I know about it. As for the buffer zones, well... They would look weird. And function in a weird way. For example, I don't want anyone in between my country and Erimor when war starts (I'm not saying it will). I also don't want anything in between when I... let's just say that area is uncontrolled and I don't want to make it unpassable. Boundaries between countries should be tight to provide efficient travel or something like that. Anyway, someone brought up the idea of moving spawn, and I kind of agree with that; it's possible to move it a bit north-east, where the unclaimed territory is. Given the fact that the spawn is already raided to shit (lots of forests, yes, but spawntown looks like a warzone), I'm not sure the spawn is very newcomer-friendly. Also, it'll allow us to claim more land... because the newcomers will be able to choose from two things: either they go south and join a nation, or either they go into the unexplored north and enjoy a non-dependant game. Pred, you mentioned that you thought Erimor should reduce its border. Based on Anon's border map and the quick outline of our current and planned settlements, what areas would you suggest removing? Bureau's opinion is that due to the number of players participating in Erimor, we don't need to. I'm skeptical that we do but also understand that new players need adequate space and we are just as responsible as everyone else in providing them space. It's a rough spot to be in and I would appreciate some help in making a decision.

I'll talk to Connor to see what he thinks. Even if we do that, we'll likely just shift our attention to those areas.

It's important that you make them as separate layers. Set the new layer's opacity to 50% and try to put it where the land interconnects without any noticeable flaws. That's how I did the big-ass pol map.
