So don't agro him. It was hard in the freeware version and it still is.
On the subject. I sorta wish they'd nerf the shopkeeper or something.
Steal something? Agro. Attack him? Agro. Pick up tiki head and it rolls over his shop? Agro. Throw something at him? Agro. Blow something up and something from the blast happens to throw a small piece of gold that hits him? Agro. Enemy attacks him? Agro on YOU. Kill a shopkeeper? All shopkeepers agro. If that's not fucking enough... even if you kill him, there will be one waiting near the exit of your next tunnel.
It's soooo fucking annoying, he's way too easy to agro compared to how hard to kill he is and how much damage he does.
Only thing I find bullshit is when environmental things agro him that you had literally no control over.
But I suppose that's the nature of random.

I really don't mind things like attacking him and stealing from him agroing him... It's just everything fucking else also agroing him. It happens so fucking constantly out of sheer accident and for reasons that logically should not have been your fault. It's annoying as hell considering how he basically just ends any run that I happen to agro him.

It's not like agroing the shopkeeper instantly ends your run though. It's totally feasible to complete it even if you anger the first shopkeeper and kill any thereafter.
Are the golden idols purposefully placed the destroy the shop? Even in the instance that it didn't destroy the main shop it ran over the underground treasure closet, with the one guy in it

Only good people can do that.
But yeah, the shopkeeper getting mad for absolutely everything is part of the difficulty.
You should generally just be VERY careful around him, and don't use bombs within 3 tiles of his shop roof, and 2 tiles from side and bottom.
You should also not just blindly use ranged attacks or throw shit really far with pitchers mitt.

It's randomized.
Picking up the idol in the mines is rarely a good idea, only do it if you confirmed that there are no shopkeepers further down at all, and also make sure to loot the level before taking it because it will destroy so much treasure on its way down.
Idol in the jungle is A LOT easier, same with ice caves.

The idols in the mines are seldom worth it.
You get a mere 5k for the cost of angering the shopkeeper or Kali, as well as crushing and destroying any gold and treasures that the boulder rolls over.
Idols in the later areas are worth way more and offer far fewer risks.
I swear i've killed myself more times than I've been killed by enemies
I once got a gold key, and threw it at a bat to try and kill it; It bounced off a wall, hit me, and I bounced and landed on some spikes.
I swear, every time I see an idol I know that means a shop has spawned on that floor. They must spawn together, I can't prove it, but I have never had an idol without a shop. It was a lot easier to get the mine idol in the classic version.

There is always a shop on 1-2.
Always.
In the old version you could just run away and the rock would freeze and never roll to begin with.
It also rolled a lot shorter if you for some reason let it roll.
[sp]Drop golden idol on Altar, get golden monkey that shits money. Not even joking.[/sp]
[sp]Drop golden idol on Altar, get golden monkey that shits money. Not even joking.[/sp]
It is also completely useless in every way and never worth doing.

Drop the crystal skull idol on Altar, get a useful money monkey instead.
8 points = random item, 16 points = kapala, every 16th after that is 8 hp.
Cavemen, scorpions, piranha plants and tiki men is 1 if dead, 2 if alive
Damsels are 4 if dead, 8 if alive
Shopkeepers are 3/6 I think.
Yetis are 2/4
That sucks, I miss the reward of a full bomb bag after the kapala. It was one of the staples of a good city of gold run. And now that Tunnel Man is no longer playable...
Would someone like to trade me Spelunky for Half Life 2: Episode One, Half Life 2: Deathmatch, The Binding of Isaac Collection, Red Faction Guerrilla, Dear Esther, Civilization IV or McPixel?
Haven't got any money and I really want to play this :(

Have you played the freeware version? It doesn't look quite as good and might not be quite so polished, but the gameplay is almost identical.

I have played the free version and the Xbox version. I'm in love with the Xbox version.
Do you no longer have access to the xbox version..?
Do you no longer have access to the xbox version..?
Not my Xbox.
I finally bother to bring the key to the tunnel man and every run I've had decided that I want a shotgun out of the first crate I open.
I appreciate it, but I would have appreciated it more if it happened when I wasn't trying to carry a key with me.
Bringing that key to the Tunnel Man has somehow managed to be the hardest thing I've ever tried to do in Spelunky, and I've gone to the golden city! Every single time something comes randomly out of the blue to kill me even when I'm like one screen away from reaching the guy. I suspect he'll never recieve it. ;__;
Pick up shotgun, point blank, shoot the shopkeeper, he doesn't get stunned and I die. wat

It was kind of OP.

Did you stand inside him instead of next to him?
Need some distance between you and him or the pellets go through.

Yes!
So watching a video of Derek Yu playing Spelunky last night he mentioned something I had NO idea you could do:
Well timed whip strikes will deflect arrows from arrow traps. That's fucking awesome, and now I take far less arrows to the face :v:
Mice also will take the arrow for you as well, I'm assuming the other various little crawly creatures can do this too.
and regarding killing shopkeeps in their own store, I usually find machetes instead of guns, so I end up smacking them and then butchering them in the corner with the machete. It's equally horrifying and hilarious.

I did that on release day.
I felt like a goddamn ninja. And then I took a graceful swandive into spikes 5 seconds later.

That's how like, 60% of my playthroughs have been :v:
The funniest ones involve the shopkeep killing me and then laughing as his stupid wrinkly ass takes a drop onto the spikes too. I fucking love Spleunky.

Ghost spawns in the city of gold now anyway so what's the point.
It literally got nerfed to only being useful for Hell runs imo.

Spoilers I guess:
[sp]Couldn't you just blow the bricks up and use the ghost to turn the gold chunks into diamonds?[/sp]
Also, try taking a picture of the ghost.

It doesn't turn regular gold into diamonds. Only gems.
