You can actually get past the "thwomps" fairly easily without bombs if they aren't in bad spots. I used to think that just touching them would kill you, but you can touch them all you want.
So do they kill you only if you get squished against a wall? Or can they still kill you in open spaces? I really thought that they could kill you on contact as long as they were moving in the original, so I've always avoided them like the plague.

Doesn't seem anybody's posted this yet, but here's the latest changelog. The update still seems to be running through Steam's gears right now though. Might just be me.
v1.3 - 8/15/2013 Quickstart option added that will let you skip from the intro straight to the Adventure Mode entrance (press 'X' - only available after beating the tutorial) Graphics settings menu added with more robust screen options (every available resolution offered, separate windowed toggle) Special effects and dynamic shadows can be set to "low" or "off" on the Graphics menu Saving is not multithreaded anymore to prevent rare save loss You can now exit completely from the game via the pause menu Tried to address more crashes related to resolution changing Framerate drops caused by last update should be fixed ESRB logo removed from beginning of game Volume settings now affect audio that plays before you reach the Main Menu Keyboard controls now display properly on the How to Play menus Ninja character no longer has visible ears in his climbing animations
I wish they'd add Steam Cloud support. I know there isn't much in the way of a save file, just some basic stats and how many shortcuts you've unlocked, but it'd be nice to be able to keep that.
It's just you, the quick start option works fine:
Ah, son of a bitch. I'm gonna go restart Steam. been waiting for hours for this bloody thing to roll in. [editline]16th August 2013[/editline] This is so weird. Every single shopkeeper I've encountered (three so far) has had gloves, a compass, a rope pile and a bomb bag in that order. Spooky.
On the other topic of characters with different stats, I think it would be awesome if the Tunnel Man returned as a playable character, with leaderboards turned off, ala Meatboy with Steve. Or, a seperate leaderboard, though I'm sure that'd require more work than they'd like.

THEN got the ghost to touch them THEN picked them up and left to do it again.

I kind of miss the "dead zone" from the freeware version. I just had a run where Kali got angered TWICE due to random explosions in the ice caves. I had the jetpack for the first time in 30+ runs, and the ball and chain pulled me into the abyss. It's pretty rare that a death in Spelunky is due to nothing but luck, but there was not a thing I could possibly have done to prevent this death.
Can't you pick up the Ball?
Not if it gets slapped on you mid-flight over the abyss.
I just realized that there are all these Kali altars and such scattered all over the mines, but the city of gold and the temple areas are all Egyptian themed. Seems kind of weird to me for some reason.

That way if an enemy is going to anger a shopkeeper or blow up an altar, it'll be in view of the player so they at least know what's coming and have a chance to prevent it if they act quickly.
i got this game yesterday and i'm having a hard time with it. i'm sure theres a lot more to the game than i've seen so far but i just keep fucking dying, and don't really know what my priorities are supposed to be. should i care about the gold in the walls and exploring the whole level or just get to the end as fast as possible?

Step 2: Die repeatedly. Step 3: Learn how to avoid dying. Once you get that down pat you will need to learn how to manage the things that you pick up such as Damsels (which give you health if you bring them to the exit alive) or carry items such as rocks that you can throw to set off traps or damage enemies or passive items that will augment your character for that run. After a while, you'll learn how to manage time properly so you can loot the stage of as much treasure as possible while still making it to the exit promptly before the ghost shows up. It's a big learning process that you can only get through experience. You're going to die a lot. Embrace the death and treat them as learning experiences. Money's only purpose in the game is a gauge of score (and as purchasing power in shops). Don't try to go for a highscore before you even have the basics down.
When you get to the jungle grab a boomerang from one of the dudes, it's a killing machine. That's my tip. Boomerang to victory. Fwup fwup fwup fwup fwup But seriously, just be careful. The levels technically have a time limit but they're small enough that you can afford to take it slow and plan your moves. Little things like never jumping down without looking down will cost you seconds but save you lives.
and for the love of christ: Don't anger the shopkeepers
no kill all the shopkeepers you unlock all the stuff
and for the love of christ: Don't anger the shopkeepers
The only time I ever did that on purpose was when I needed a shotgun to get the shortcut to the ice caves open but only had a boomerang I traded with the shopkeeper...
So I found a coffin in the temple suspended over lava, but there was a wall in my way. So I blew up the wall and the coffin was still above the lava. I shot the coffin with my shotgun to free my spelunking comrade from her prison into the lava pool below. Baptism by fire if I've ever seen it.
All right, I finally beat Olmec for the first time in the HD version. I'm a little ashamed that it took me over 100 deaths before it happened, but at least it wasn't quite the 160 it took me originally. Also feels pretty nice that I was able to do it without a shotgun or jetpack. Not even a cape either. I was just armed with spring shoes, climbing gloves, and a rock that got squished halfway through the fight. I was down to 1 HP when I finally won. Feels good. Oh, and I killed Anubis along the way by luring him against a tiki trap, but I declined picking up the scepter since it's already killed me so many times. :v:
I wish the scepter wasn't basically pointless. It's such a great reward for all that work.
So once again I try my luck in the ruins.
