and for the love of christ: Don't anger the shopkeepers
When doing score runs, killing the shopkeep on 1-2 is mandatory.
When doing hell runs, you might want to anger the shopkeeper on 1-2, but you could decide to not do that and pass through the game peacefully, you're not going for score anyway.
So once again I try my luck in the ruins.

and then on my second attempt

I'm taking a break
Once again, going to the temple with no items just doesn't work. Bombs are needed and so is limited amounts of movement + a weapon for Anubis.
BTW, a tip if anyone has problems getting to hell, spend your money early, don't save up 50k before buying ANYTHING. Most of my good runs I bought some stuff on 1-2 or 1-3 or 1-4 or even on the jungle levels (spring shoes, spike shoes, climbing gloves, jetpack once, bombs obviously)
Another thing, bombs are ALWAYS worth their price, even if it costs you 50k to clear a bomb shop, do it. You can EASILY convert 1 bomb for more than the 1000 gold you spent on each just by blowing up a single gem.
I don't recommend buying a cape (ever), but spike shoes + compass is pretty mandatory on all hell runs, climbing gloves and spring shoes nice as well.
Do you advice against the cape because it's expensive and common?
Do you advice against the cape because it's expensive and common?
And you can get better items for less than or equal to the price of a cape.
Do you advice against the cape because it's expensive and common?
The only thing cape lets you do is jump slightly further sideways and avoid stupid fall damage that you should have avoided in the first place.
It lets you skip ice caves, so does climbing gloves.
The odds of not finding a free cape at some point during a run is really low (one dead are restless level, kali sacrifice (I tend to get a lot of capes from Kali actually), or getting to hell = lods of capes. Meanwhile, getting climbing gloves from a crate is really rare, and the big frogs rarely drop spring shoes.
And yeah, very expensive compared to what it gives you.
Spring shoes + climbing gloves is cheaper and more effective overall than cape. It lets you jump almost as far sideways (depending on how far to the side you are going, cape obviously goes really far if it's a long distance) as well as letting you actually go upwards and slowly descend as well (hug wall to dodge fall damage at any time)
I always make fun of Northernlion for being bad, but then I manage to throw a skull on the ground and hit myself with it :v:
I do a lot of those fancy jumps that let you hit yourself in the face with an object without it actually leaving your hand.
This gets very annoying because I don't know exactly what causes it but I still manage to do it quite often.
So apparently it's possible to get a level with no damsel on it. I cleared the whole thing. NOTHING.

If there is a kissing booth there wont be a random damsel on the level.

That's the thing: There wasn't even a shop.

Perhaps you just didn't look hard enough.
It's not unheard of for a seemingly long stretch of empty walls to have a 1x1 spot with a damsel/other item in it.
I kind of doubt you checked absolutely everywhere considering that'd take far too many bombs.

It was a fairly open level; not a whole lot of interest. I checked every stretch of grey wall, and the center. no such shop to be found, or the damsel.
The only time a damsel is guaranteed to spawn is if the stage has the "I hear prayers to Kali" feeling to it. Otherwise it's a complete crapshoot whether one will spawn or not.

I used to think NorthernLion was bad. Then I played it and realized he's not half bad at all.

Yeah, this is why it was so hard to get a run where you save 8 damsels in the original. But I think the HD version makes damsels more common. I've gotten 8 or 9 in a run already without even trying, but it took all kinds of effort, finding a jetpack and using bombs liberally to rescue 8 damsels in the freeware version.
Wait what, damsels aren't 100% spawn?
I've died well over 300 times and have never experienced not finding a damsel when looking for one.

I used to think he was bad but he became drastically better over a very short period of time for some reason. He did teach me how to Spelunky though, because I was at an equal skill level to his the second I entered the arena and got to hell fairly quickly. (having never touched the game outside of watching him play)
Damn, this new quickstart feature is so good. It must have taken about a minute to actually get playing before, now it's pretty much instantaneous.

Also, new avatar.
The ghost killed me in the mothership
Of ALL the fucking things in there
The worst part is that I would have gotten away except I was clinging to the side of an elevator block, and you can't pull yourself up while it's going up.
Either i'm seeing things but i think after you pick a fight with a shopkeeper, the rate of stores appearing goes up, that way you wind up encountering more pissed off gun-toting old dudes
In the original Spelunky, I'm pretty sure that they made it so it was as easy as possible to accidentally piss off the shopkeepers. :(
Woo got the shortcut to the temple open.
The key is now my best friend

agh goddamn I want this so bad but I don't have the money for it, I hope it goes on sale someday
[sp]a man can dream can't he[/sp]
Good level 1, $20000, bomb bag, rope pile
Good level 2, sacrifice dog, rope pile
Good level 3, get kapala
Jump on spikes.
So how exactly do I get to the worm level? I have to get a damsel on one of those orange pustule things, but the damsel can't be stunned? So how do I make that happen?

grab the damsel and go to the lower edge of the pustule thing, then throw her inwards so she sticks to it without flying off the edge. she'll wake up eventually, and then you just wait a bit and the worm will show up.

It's easier to just jump on it and then throw the damsel.

Heaviest key on the planet.
This game reminds of the Binding of Issac. Do you guys think it is worth the $13 or 14 dollars it is? Im interested in a funny little game that wont require me to get mega involved in seeing as I dont have that much free time.
