This is a pretty good mod for the freeware spelunky. It adds a basic inventory system plus a few minor things. http://mossmouth.com/forums/index.php?topic=1247.0
I've realized I am fucking terrible at this game. 50 or so tries, I reached jungle two times, both those times I died to something stupid.
I died 160 times before I ever beat the game.
I died 160 times before I ever beat the game.
By that logic I should've mastered jungle by now :(
1126 deaths. And that's not counting the file I accidentally reset that had 500 or so deaths. I've completely mastered the game by now, but the final boss is a total bitch.
I watched northernlions let's play last night. The game looks amazing.
I'm horrible at this game, but it's so much fun. I'll wait for it to go on steam before I get the HD version, though. [editline]8th July 2012[/editline] Bizarre mode is the best way to play this.
Needs more updated PC version. (also online co op)
http://mossmouth.com/forums/index.php?topic=1336.0
http://mossmouth.com/forums/index.php?topic=1336.0
Have you tried it yourself and seen that it works goodish?
Have you tried it yourself and seen that it works goodish?
It probably doesn't
Someone should make an online multiplayer mod for this.
It probably doesn't
Thought so.
What's new in the XBLA version?
What's new in the XBLA version?
Graphics, new events, some new monsters, overall polish, some secret levels, and no bugs. Also, best thread of 2012 http://mossmouth.com/forums/index.php?topic=2621.0
So I finally unlocked the shortcut to jungle AND got to icy caves in one run. I died horribly on spikes almost as soon as I got there though :v:
I have the caves and jungle themes permanently engraved in my mind. I haven't been in the ice place long enough to memorize the theme, and only got to the temple like twice. [editline]8th July 2012[/editline] Even now I can still find myself humming those themes

Also, best thread of 2012 http://mossmouth.com/forums/index.php?topic=2621.0
For a second I thought you were talking about this one and went "aw shucks" :v: Serious note, Derek's already expressed interest in a PC version, he didn't say a release date or it's FOR SURE but he said that he's already thinking about it.
Bought it, because I spent literally ALL of yesterday and today playing Spelunky and realized, well, I owe Derek SOMETHING. It is, of course, absolutely fantastic, but to be honest I'm nottttt sure I like it as much as the PC version. For one, the graphics and music. I've already mentioned that, but really both are downgrades IMO. Second, the removal of the "dead zone" -- in the PC Spelunky, anything that's offscreen is frozen. This means you're never subjected to attacks from spiders or traps or other crap that you can't see. In the XBLA version... well let's say I've died more than a few times to the hyper-buffed, offscreen traps. Guh. Plus some other general BS. The whip's been severely nerfed. It has less range and seems to have a shorter period of damage. Destroying a pot with a monster inside no longer also destroys that monster, for example. (By the way, I've been finding a LOT more fucking spiders in pots than I ever remember.) And I've had a significant number of shopkeepers murder me because an exploding frog stepped in spikes near their store. (Again, removal of "dead zone" means lots of bullshit like that.) So basically if it ever gets ported to PC I hope he brings the dead zone back. [editline]8th July 2012[/editline] Oh yeah, and the single MOST ANNOYING THING IN THE WORLD GAH Thrown items are WAY more likely to smash you over the head. Sometimes you don't even need to throw them. If you try to ledge hang while carrying a pebble, the pebble will drop from your hands and somehow smash you over the head. That's just fucking stupid. One thing I do like: the journal. It's super nifty.
The dead zone was only because of limitations of game maker from what I understood so doubt that he'd bring it back, as it was never a intended thing. Also holy shit reading up on [sp]Hell[/sp] all the monsters there are assholes.
Yeah, I figured it was because of Game Maker but honestly it worked in the game's favor. Dying to offscreen enemies and traps is just not at terrible lot of fun. Granted, it caused problems, too (like how you could grab an idol and run away without the boulder ever falling) but at least it prevented general bullshit.
A tip for anyone relatively new to the game: Don't be too concerned with shortcut tunnels. It's good to get them finished just so you can eventually 100% the game and play as tunnel man, but it's generally not very helpful to take the shortcut tunnels. Playing through the earlier levels gives you more opportunity to find good items and supplies, and you have to start from level 1 if you want to discover the legendary city of gold. Taking the shortcut tunnels might help you to beat the game faster, but I don't think you actually unlock anything for beating the game. Only if you do it under 10 minutes, or save at least 8 damsels in the course of a run, or get at least 120 kills in the course of a run, or get something like $250k in the course of a run. But you might not be eligible for those unlockables if you take the shortcuts.

Like, I'm at the point where the Mines are mostly a non-issue, but I still kind of suck at the Jungle. So I've been using the Jungle shortcut to repeatedly play the Jungle and get used to the enemies, traps, etc. So I'd say definitely get the shortcuts set up if you have the resources when you pass the Tunnel Man. It'd be a massive waste to do otherwise.

There's a method to disallow objects from running any of their events so long as they are disabled; Derek explicitly disabled/enabled objects depending on if they were onscreen or not. Granted, he likely did that because of GM's performance issues with having lots of objects active at once, the "deadzone" effect wasn't exclusively the fault of GM. Things like the boulder not following you could have been remedied by not having certain entities being disabled when offscreen due to their importance. But it's been 4 years since the original came out :v:
The new artstyle really puts me off :/
Oh shit, there's a whip replacement in the new Worm level. Super useful, compared to most items which have to be carried.
The screenshots didn't sell me on the artstyle, but it looks great in motion. Also very glad to see that the aliens have been expanded on. They were probably the most intriguing part of the ice levels, but underused. [editline]1[/editline] Too bad I'll have to wait a long time to play this.
I came in here thinking Spelunky - Welcome to die was somehow a sperm game, with Spelunky being a slang for sperm and 'Welcome to die' meaning that we are welcoming (ejaculating) the sperm to die (ejaculating into a tissue). In other words sperm is released into the world to only be put onto tissues and not into eggs. Nevertheless, this looks much better and more interesting.
My best run so far. I went from "Dying at 2-2 every time" to "Dying at 3-3 for the first time" Also, I angered a shop keeper, and to my surprise, got away with his damsel in one piece. I did a lot of lucky dodges though, like, at the exit on the next level I avoided his gun by an inch, I also unlocked the jungle shortcut. I feel like I've accomplished something. Albeit, I wonder, why didn't tunnel man show up when I entered the ice caverns?
