What?
The statue can only be on level 2 or 3. You thoroughly search level 2, because then you don't have to actually look for it at level 3, and can just derp around.

I just spent about 20 minutes running laps around the black market to repeatedly play the wheel game, saving up for equipment... Then, even though I had the ankh, I died twice under 1 minute in the very next stage.
I installed a mod and I think it looks really good

Get the Plasma Cannon for the first time
proceed to knock myself off the map with the knockback
god those Croc guys are such complete fucking bullshit it's unreal. that's twice i've been instantly spawnkilled one room away from Olmec by those fuckers
While I never get telefragged by crocmen, I've gotten around 100 scorpion pots so far, 4 in a row once.

Tiki men are bullshit too. I had one spawn right next to me when I entered a level and his boomerang knocked me onto some spikes.

You get about 0,5 seconds to prepare as the level is frozen, if you can see a tiki man just jump instantly.
Spelunky Vita/PS3 is out!

I love this game, and the HD version is superior in so many ways…
But I'm tearing my hair at all the bullshit deaths/unavoidable fuck ups in this version. Seriously, I never got this frustrated by the original game, even though I barely completed it. My failures were always due to my own mistakes. Not so in this one.
My top gripes, in no particular order:
1. The god-DAMN arrow traps. Whose idea was it that these things defy gravity? It results in many situations where you take damage out of nowhere.
2. All objects being whippable. This serves little practical use, it's screwed me over more times than I can count. Whipping valuable tools/damsels off ledges (potentially into the abyss), pushing treasure away, what the hell.
3. The simplified controls. I get it, some of the original mechanics were needlessly contrived. But at least I could easily cook my bombs, drop ropes/bombs without priming them, not worry about picking up powerups I don't want, etc. I agree that a button for picking stuff up would be nice, too, though the current system is reasonable enough.
4. The realtime world. The original game was designed with Game Maker's weird time system in mind, and the new game doesn't account for the consequences of changing this. Shopkeepers should NOT aggro at us for things we aren't responsible for.
These are gaping flaws in the game's design, and they spoil the experience so much that I'm considering quitting entirely. It's quite a shame, really, and I hope Derek and co. aren't ruling out future gameplay fixes. God knows how these game breakers were accepted for a whole year on the 360.
I'm guessing the Xbox version must not have gotten as much attention as the PC version is getting. Makes sense, since it was originally a PC game.
But just within a week or so they did make some quick and important changes to the PC version, like adding the quick-start button, and making volume settings apply to things that come before the main menu. I'm sure those were fairly easy things to do, but maybe this also indicates that they'll consider some more complicated balancing changes and shit as well.

1. I have noticed no difference in the arrow traps. They were just as dangerous in the original version.
2. I've found this useful - for example knocking a rock off a ledge rather than picking it up and throwing it down.
3. Cooking off bombs is harder, but the streamlined controls are worth it in my opinion.
4. Your complaint about shopkeepers has nothing to do with the time simulation. Also original spelunky had annoying bugs related to this as well (mainly due to things going off screen and no longer being simulated). I can imagine some convoluted system whereby shopkeepers don't blame you for random acts of God, but I can understand why the designers opted not to bother with such an undertaking.
anyway I scienced today
1. I have noticed no difference in the arrow traps. They were just as dangerous in the original version.
Arrow traps have definitely changed. They're a lot faster, and they travel a lot farther before they start to fall. In the original, if an arrow trap is on the same ground level with you, and you walk toward it from off-screen, it would not hit you if you walk into the edge of its range. In the new version, something could conceivably trigger an off-screen arrow trap and get you hit by something you didn't even know was there.
It helps that it's now possible to whip an arrow out of the air, but that still probably won't protect you from an off-screen trap you couldn't have possibly planned for.
1. I have noticed no difference in the arrow traps. They were just as dangerous in the original version.
The original arrow traps shot slower and were affected by gravity. They are much more dangerous here (not that that's inherently bad, it just makes no sense in this case). Edit: Beaten
2. I've found this useful - for example knocking a rock off a ledge rather than picking it up and throwing it down.
As I said, 'little practical use'. It does have its uses, but not enough to justify the functionality.
4. Your complaint about shopkeepers has nothing to do with the time simulation. Actually it has lots to do with the time simulation. The random shopkeeper aggros weren't as common in the original because you always arrived in time to remove the danger. I don't mind the realtime world but the mechanics haven't been adjusted to accomodate it, that's the problem.
I see lots of ways this could be solved, it's hardly as convoluted as you're implying. For starters, allow the shopkeeper to target monsters instead of the player when he gets pissed.
Finally beat hell without dying like a retard, I had a "AKSDPOAKSOPD WHAT DID I DO" moment when I fell into the lava after killing him with 22 HP spare but then I realized the amulet actually makes me immune to lava.

1. If an arrow trap is triggered with you near it you either ran through the level in a couple of seconds or you are the reason it triggered in the first place due to chain reactions.
2. What's wrong with this?
3. Climbing gloves are annoying with autograb but you get used to it eventually, I can't see why you'd want to avoid picking up any items aside from the pitchers mitt though, you could always open crates at a distance.
4. That's RNG. The gamemaker system also messed with things like the boulder trap.
I can see some people are getting defensive about this. Don't get me wrong, I love this game for the most part, I played the freeware version for ages. I was letting off steam and I'm sorry if it sounded harsh.
But if you dislike my whiny attitude call me out on it, don't defend the bullshit I pointed out because it really doesn't deserve defending. Come on! It's okay that a game has flaws, and it's okay to point them out as you see them.
Bought the PSVita version. It's great on a handheld, and now I can become infuriated with a video game in public!
Being able to whip gold and shit like that is actually really useful if you're trying to get the "low scorer" achievement.
I gave it a shot last night just for fun, and it seems surprisingly easy. It's weird that so few people have that one on Steam. I guess it's because it's something you have to consciously attempt to do, and it's counter-intuitive to how the game is normally played.
But half my runs ended just because I forgot what I was doing and accidentally grabbed a gold bar on impulse. :v: Another run ended in the ice caves, when a random explosion flung gold right onto me from off screen.
I downloaded the demo from PSN and really enjoyed it. Probably gonna pick it up soon.

Welp.
If that ever happens again, you can do this to escape:
Since the ghost is coming you do not have time to whip them all with your upper whip, so just throw up a rope, which will kill all 3 of them in the picture, the big spider will do an overly far jump to the lef,t then you run like a mofo (and get the ropes)

I do agreed that climbing gloves needs some option for autograb on/off but shopkeepers getting mad at you for no reason at all is very like the original. Don't see why you'd want the option to skip items though, even the pitchers mitt is useful on hell runs.
At least shopkeepers don't get mad at you if a piranha plant eats them.
