or realistically: you throw a rope which kills all 3 spiders, pushes the big one right in front of the door who will then take a good 8 bounces to kill because you don't have spike shoes.
or just run straight to the left as soon as you heard the ghost and rope up there and attempt to avoid spider molestation

Rope doesn't push big spider (if it for some reason does, that's not very far at all), and there's no way he'd jump to the right.

oh yeah then he's just stuck between the big spider, the ghost and a wall, my bad
I see lots of ways this could be solved, it's hardly as convoluted as you're implying. For starters, allow the shopkeeper to target monsters instead of the player when he gets pissed.
From a programming standpoint it's a big difference. Right now it's basically
if (shop_damaged() || shopkeeper_attacked() || item_stolen() || player_thinks_they_will_win())
flip_the_fuck_out = true;
Which is a little overzealous, but it's simple and completely precludes the possibility of getting free stuff from the shop without getting angry shopkeepers.
If you let the shopkeeper get mad at monsters... well what if the monster was aggroed by the player? What if the monster was knocked into the shop by the player? What if the player throws a rock that blows up a crate knocking an orange frog into some spikes by the shop entrance? Did they hit the crate on purpose? Did they know it would cause a chain reaction with the frog? Whose fault was it? Not only would it be much harder to implement but it would also open up countless opportunities to indirectly kill shopkeepers without getting in trouble.
Yes, it really blows that shopkeepers can get mad at you for something that you didn't do, but I see it as an inherent limitation of Spelunky.
oh yeah then he's just stuck between the big spider, the ghost and a wall, my bad
He'd be stuck between a ghost + big spider on the left, and an easily passable wall on the right due to delay in spider jump and the ghost being slow as fuck.
The spider would never jump to the right, and when jumping to the left the odds are quite large that it'd go over to the left.
The spider could however decide to just stand there and shoot webs.
The shopkeeper really needs some work done.
Nothing like triggering the boulder trap, dodging it, only to get fucking destroyed by the shopkeeper to ruin your day.

You should know not to get the idol in the mines unless there's no shopkeeper in the level.

I know this now. :eng101:
I just unlocked a viking looking character somehow on a rushing water jungle level.
I don't know how either. I saw the exit door to the level just above the water line so I threw the corpse I was carrying around with me off to the left (I had the throwing mitts). I heard a few things get hit, a tiki trap go off, a few splashes then a prompt explosion under the water somewhere and then it just popped up that I had unlocked a new character.
Was he hidden at the bottom of the piranha pond?
You can also get it if the shopkeeper spawned above the idol, watch out for hermit shopkeepers though.

You hit the coffin with the corpse which unlocked him for you.
I got stuck in this loop until I died and it didn't exactly stop after that.

Woah, entered a normal level 2 mines and suddenly sad music.
Woah, entered a normal level 2 mines and suddenly sad music.
It's not "sad music", it's just "8-bit"
Does sound kinda sad though doesnt it?
Good thing about Freeware Spelunky is the music in the mines always sounded kind of optimistic. Half the time in HD version it sounds dismal and hopeless
Wow, the thread has been progressing slowly. I didn't realize how old this was.
Can you not revive the pointless drama that's over since yesterday please, this thread is fine without it.
wow i got the chiptune music twice in 5 runs
wow i got the chiptune music twice in 5 runs
When I first started I got it so many times, once twice in a row, then something else, then that music again. I should've had that luck in the lottery, not here.

Nothing and nowhere is safe in Spelunky.
Man, I wish I had $15 to chip into this game. I really loved the original version, so I am guessing I'll love this one.
One question though, is there any differences between the 360 version to the PC version?

Daily Challenge. Quick start during the intro cinematic, whatever other bugfixes they poop out.

i'm training for the steam version (if i ever get it, that's not very likely though)

It's very different. Lots of new enemies and some new items have been added, there are more secret levels to find (kind of like the black market, but easier to reach), and a whole new optional branch of levels after the final boss, to take you to a final final boss.
But aside from the extra content, the mechanics of the game have changed a lot too. Throwing items feels pretty different from the original, items and damsels can be whipped, and if you look around this thread much, you'll see that there's a controversial new function that makes you automatically grab a ledge if you fall too close to it.

Ah, thanks for letting me know. Hope I can get someone to buy it for me. :v:

360 and PC differences, not original and new.
360 and PC differences, not original and new.
Oh, yeah I misread that. I thought the question was about the original PC version and the 360 version.
I was thinking of the Steam version as the 360 version, because they're pretty much the same thing. :v:
