I don't understand the hate for autograb, it has saved my ass countless times.
those tight holes where you have to drop down fully in order not to get fucked over by a tiki trap. It's painful because that extra nanosecond you waste autograbbing a ledge in front of the trap pretty much always kills you.

Also am I the only person in this thread to realise that Climbing Gloves is cancer or what
You are the only person that doesn't realize how useful they are yes.
With jetpack it resets your fuel by grabbing stuff, they can be used to terminate fall damage, and they give you a lot more gold in the long run at the cost of no ropes. Also they let you jump 3 blocks instead of 2 since you can grab onto the bottom of the third block and then just jump up.

Why would you need any of this when you can have spring shoes for half the price.

Oh and if you let your jetpack fuel run out you really have issues
[editline]2nd September 2013[/editline]
Anybody using climbing gloves with a jetpack should launch cheat engine and give them a level 1 jetpack without gloves to feel how dumb they are.

I too get mad at other people playing videogames.
I don't understand the hate for autograb, it has saved my ass countless times.
Autograb just seems redundant to people who have played the original.
In Spelunky Classic, you hold the direction of the ledge you want to grab onto and you grab it. If not, you just slip down. It makes ledge grabbing feel deliberate for the player, that they actively were inputting something to cause it. In general, it just feels more responsive for things to be deliberate.
In Spelunky HD. Autograb most commonly will screw with you in situations where you're trying to drop downward. I want gravity to take over, not to latch onto the wall every 5 feet I drop. The split second it requires you to respond to the grab again can cost you precious time when trying to evade a precariously-placed tiki trap or ghost.
The climbing gloves on their own were rather remarkable in Spelunky Classic, it just feels so much more clunky to use them in the remake because of the automatic wall grabbing. They're still rather helpful, but they can quickly become a liability if you are put into a narrow vertical passage.

Because the spring shoes are garbage which have resulted in a myriad of bat and pit related deaths due to fucking up my sense of jumping ability?
Autograb has been useful in a grande total of 1 situation for me. And that was when I was dropping straight down (fall damage distance) and latched onto a ledge that was right there.
In Spelunky Classic, I would need to hold the direction of the ledge at just the right moment in order to grab it, otherwise I'd take fall damage by landing on the platform or just miss the ledge entirely.
Personally, I found that requiring that sort of timing to grab a ledge while in freefall was a good thing. It kept you from actively trying to take advantage of that, instead you need to plan your descent around not taking fall damage. Once again, it feels deliberate and responsive this way.

So you complain about a taller jump but not about forced autograb at everything ?
Do you say Vlad's Wings are worse than the regular Cape too ?
Finally beat Olmec 33 hours in, woo :v:

If you let climbing gloves get you killed with a jetpack you have serious issues.
There is literally nothing negative about climbing gloves + jetpack.
It offers way more safety and means you have absolutely no use for ropes ever, even if your goal is really high up with no breaks inbetween.
No there is literally nothing negative about climbing gloves + jetpack.
But gloves by themselves make you stick everywhere and waste time or even get you killed.
And if you have a jetpack you don't need climbing gloves.
And it doesn't offer more safety (give me an example where it does), plus you don't need ropes at all with the jetpack, I could understand if you mentioned the cape but with the jetpack you don't need gloves not to use ropes.
This is entertaining to watch.
Ugh, finally unlocked the temple shortcut.
Best moment was when, in the last level of the ice caves, I decide to drop down to the exit, which turned out to be just a bit too far down, resulting in me falling on my face, dropping the key into the abyss.
Aannndd another failed City of Gold run.
4-1, killed Anubis, get knocked out by one of those bugs from a mummy, and fall into a pit of lava.
Go me.
Anubis just got killed by a Tiki trap.
guess even he's not immune to autograb
I've yet to spend much time in the jungle so maybe that's why I see nothing bad about autograb. :v:
Christ, 70 deaths in and I'm just now realizing what the shortcut guy does.
I can't tell you how many times I've made it to the jungle only to die and replay the mines over again.

You are more likely to win the game playing it all the way trough than using shortcuts.
Winning using the Temple shortcut is as hard as reaching the Temple starting from the mines, and the bossfight is just usually way harder.

I was on the verge of quitting the game forever until I realized there was a shortcut I could take to back to the jungle after dying. :pwn:
Without using the shortcuts it'll take you an extraordinary amount of time to know each zone well enough to get through them, learning the whole place without shortcuts basically holds to the law of diminishing returns i.e. 50% of your runs you get to the jungle, takes twice as long to master then 50% of those runs you get to the ice caves therefore taking you 4x as long to master etc. Shortcuts are a great way to get comfortable and acclimatize yourself in a new area.
am I like the only person that beat his first olmec without using shortcuts or what
This is probably one of the first run and jump games that I've played in 10 years and my patience is a bit limited.
Is there really anything bad about using shortcuts that the game provides?
You'll be lacking in equipment, but the first time I beat Olmec was using the temple shortcut (of course I just ran straight for the door most of the time).
You can only access Hell (where the actual final boss is) by starting from the beginning.

Well, afaik the udjat eye isn't required (i might be wrong?) it just helps to have it

its not needed but you need helluv a good eye and luck to get to the black market
Guess what I did

How about if holding the down key disabled autograb? Would that fix it? I tend to mash down and space when I'm about to autograb on a dangerous position, so the problem would naturally fix itself in my case.

One time a monkey stole a bomb from me and it opened up the black market. Talk about sheer luck.
