I remember this game as freeware years ago. It seems they've added a lot since then. Is there a changlelog?
It's kind of a totally new game or remake of the classic.
oh and one of the more fundamental changes: no more dead zone. the dead zone was a limit of gamemaker so now that that's gone, everything is moving all the time. which is interesting, but also kind of frustrating on occasion: expect to be attack by off-screen spiders, and have shops demolished by off-screen boulders, etc.
Could anyone explain to me what makes this game as great as everyone tells me it is? Haven't played it myself, but I'm curious.

And for a platformer, this means you'll never be able to rely on muscle memory. In addition, it's very common to be afflicted with the desire for "one more try," the game can get addicting. While the goal may not change, the experience is never comparable between 2 runs. It's perpetually fresh. The game teaches you through punching your face in when you make mistakes. Not once does it ever hold your hand or try to baby you through it. Any decisions that you make are what the player thinks are best for that moment and then they must deal with the consequences if they chose poorly, much like real life. The skills gained through playing the game are about tact and execution. The ability to make on-the-fly decisions and work with whatever consequences come your way.
I was wondering why they decided to not even make remixes of the classic tunes. The soundtrack for the caves in the original was one of my favorites and it got replaced by a much more mellow tune.
My biggest gripe with the OST in this. The original music was amazing, now we just have a new "meh" track using the Genesis soundfont. Even the rare, 8-bity songs that play sometimes (dubbed with the suffix "egg" in the game files) is just some generic tune instead of an homage to the original. What the fuck?
im so fucking terrible at this but i cant stop playing i wish i would stop having to fall and break my legs a lot, i try to lower myself down with rope but most of the time the fall distance is still too great

Give it time.

That's usually an indicator that you won't lose a heart from jumping/falling from where you are. Or maybe that was just the 360 version.
Tired of the Journal giving you cute, but worthless notes about everything? Look no further! With this mod, the Journal actually gives you factual information about most objects in the game - including their HP, Damage Output, what they do, and much more! Get it here! Screenshots: [t]http://puu.sh/3XiuL.jpg[/t][t]http://puu.sh/3XivE.jpg[/t][t]http://puu.sh/3Xiwi.jpg[/t] To install: Put dat shit here
Any reason why I can only play with a keyboard? I can't switch player 1 to using the gamepad.
mmm this game is good almost got to the jungle on my first run. even after watching thenorthernlion for countless hours i still end up doing the dumbest mistakes.
I'm having a hell of a fucking time with this game. I seriously can't get past the 3rd level yet. It's hard as all hell and some creatures just fuck you right up. Especially the ones that hide in vases.
throw pots don't whip them this is rule number 1
you can easily just double whip a pot and kill them right away tho
throw pots don't whip them this is rule number 1
Not entirely true. You can easily dispatch enemies in pots with your whip, you just have to be careful. For example, try not to whip pots in a spot like this: A spitting snake or spider could easily come out and fuck your shit up. In that case, it's not worth it. However, if the Pot is right next to you on equal ground, then you can in 9/10 cases whip faster then the enemy inside can react. Snakes and Spiders are frozen for a moment after being free'd, just long enough to whip them. This is useful if you don't want to toss the pot and risk losing the bounty.
where's your paste man
I died soon afterwards so nowhere
Yay I got my sound mod working The Mines now plays the original spelunky music A tip to wayward modders of yonder: there's an .ogg called "adventure" that you'll probably miss in the music folder, even though it's seperate from them it's one of the songs that plays in the mines, make sure to change it.
-Arrows have heads, the headless arrow will remain once it hits something -Tiny critters on the floor
I would like to add to this that the broken arrows can be thrown, and used to set off other arrow traps and whatnot, but they don't actually hurt enemies when thrown at them. It might stun them for a second but that's the best you'll get. Also, the tiny critters can be picked up and used in a similar fashion. I just got the steam version. It's weird how I feel like I have to re-learn so much of the game. Like, I know vaguely how most of the enemies and traps work, but the game's mechanics still feel so different in a lot of ways. Like those spear traps in the jungle. In the free version, it was so easy for me to hop up, grab the edge of one, and then get on top of it before the spears stab me. But now it seems like the spears trigger too early for me to do that, or like they come out faster. Also, it's weird to me how I can fall a square or two below the bottom of my screen and not take fall damage. That was always the scale I used in the free version, to just crouch down and see if there were any blocks below me, and if they were at the very very bottom, I knew I couldn't jump down to them without getting hurt. But now I think the game has a narrower focus, so to take fall damage, I have to drop down a distance that I can't even see. I think my biggest gripes with the game are that there's no online multiplayer (would have made the game amazing but I know how hard it'd be to do), and that all of the characters are just re-skins. We don't even get the tunnel man as a playable character anymore. I was hoping at least some of the unlockable characters would have special abilities, even if it was simple shit like different amounts of health, bombs, and rope at the start.
throw pots don't whip them this is rule number 1
Better yet, throw an arrow at the pot. It breaks it and kills the enemy simultaneously.
I have set my damsels to pugs and I am never going back. They're just too cute. :3
Another change I've noticed: You no longer get the 30-second "warning" period when you're about to hit the time limit on a level. As far as I can tell, the ghost comes into the level right at the 2:30 mark, at the same moment you get the "a chill runs up your spine" message.

You can also rush it like the original but it's harder and riskier.
Oh yeah, another change that was made transitioning from freeware to HD. -Nerfed the rock's damage by 50% RIP OP rock, scissors never stood a chance.
But it also seems a lot easier to hit yourself with a thrown item. In the old version they had to be moving pretty fast, like propelled by an explosion or a pitcher's mitt, but now you can still take damage from a much slower-moving projectile.
-woop Psychopath12 already said that-
i was in the mines before and i heard some music i've never heard of before. i looked in the music folder and found out it's called 'A01_egg'. did i miss something special? it's actually a pretty cool song, reminds me a bit of secret of mana. the whole game's sound track is kinda a hit or miss for me.
i prefered the music from the 2008 version :(
it all sounds too jazzy and elevator music-y the game would be so much more amazing if Danny Baranowsky composed the music
