How the fuck are we forgetting Star Wars Battlefront?!
how are we forgetting multiplayer bots in SC and SC2?
And if anything i expected that users or mod developers would make bot addons but the only bot addon i found for a game was killing floor
It sucks really, bots shouldn't have to be a dead game feature, especially with what we can do with games now
Team Fortress 2 has bots.
Added like 2 years after release.
Bot support is no longer seen as necessary, as we live in an era where fast Internet connections are ubiquitous, and the number of people who play multiplayer games offline is minimal. More importantly, bot support takes time and effort to program, especially in more complex games. Getting bots to play Counter-Strike, where they just need to shoot and accomplish objectives, is one thing, but making them effective at, say, TF2, with its myriad items and very involved class-counter strategy, is very different.
I don't mean to sound flippant, but why don't you just play online?
Bots allow you to continue playing a game long after the multiplayer has effectively died out.
Battlezone II's multiplayer is now populated by like twenty people who play in ~exclusive~ games, but I can still play it (and all its online mods with bot support) in the online mode with bots, or with players and bots at the same time.
I want a game like rainbow six, where you control a team and it's just as difficult but you can customize yourself and the other teammembers and give each one a different role/class
but of course if it does exist whoever develops it won't have any AI Squadmates and it'd be multiplayer only....
cept if valve made a game like that
I imagine that they're stuck behind some piece of terrain
Even earlier on in a game's lifespan, Bots are a good way to let loose if you're having trouble in normal multiplayer, they're also really fun to dick around with while playing with a couple of friends.
However, as has been said, a lot of the more morally bankrupt publishers don't want future-proofing. They want to be able to make a sequel in one or two years and close off multiplayer access to the previous game to make people think "Oh, well I can't play that now, guess I just have to buy the sequel". EA has been doing this for a long-ass time now, but most publishers are doing it nowadays.
I wanted to mention Jedi Academy's bots, awesome that you already used it as an example. Those bots were awesome. Depending on the difficulty, they could be pretty hard to kill. It was even possible to choose the strenght of each added bot indiviually. They were always pretty neat for some training or just to fuck around a bit. I miss those days.
that owned. I remember setting it so I had a huge team of weak bots against one super tough bot. That was fun.
What happened to you, games industry? You sold out. It used to be about the FUN!
But seriously, this shit pisses me off. Every game needs bots.

Even though it's completely impossible, multiplayer bots for GTA4 where you can customize their behavior so they'll do different stuff (like one can go on a rampage or make a group follow you) would be wicked
but still that would be impossible
Like seriously i don't have to explain how impossible it would be for a big sandbox game to run a few bots all over the area without a crapton of bugs
Perfect Dark for the N64 had the best bots ever.

There are trainers that let you spawn civilians with predetermined behaviors. It isn't impossible.

The Homies from Saints Row are basically bots that follow the player around, hijack vehicles when necessary, and kill enemies (and anything the player damages) on sight. If the game loaded objects further away, they could probably be more autonomous.
Because with the complexity of games nowadays it's hard to code bots that behave like actual players
Because with the complexity of games nowadays it's hard to code bots that behave like actual players
It doesn't have to behave like actual players but is it too hard to ask for a little bit of AI improvements more than once a decade? Half Life 2 still has some of the best AI in games and it came out almost 8 years ago.

Nonsense. Tribes 2 (2001) is one of the most complex (gameplay wise, not just control wise) games around, yet the bots are able to play as well as a (bad) player. They react to the player blowing up their shit, sniping, etc. Granted, they don't do the most important thing to online play (ski), but that would require enormously complex pathfinding beyond anything in any modern game.
The only games where a bot couldn't really work are RPGs and the like. Not putting them in a FPS game is just laziness and planned obsolescence.
Made a small list for games with multiplayer bots/AI in the op
More games should have bots.
That way when the game's multiplayer dies down, people can still play it (a la Star Wars Battlefront).

Halo needs Bots, that can have customizable armor or random armor on each multiplayer match
battlefield 1942 has the best bots
battlefield 1942 has the best bots
nope, 2142 takes the cake

It does have some good bots
unfortunately i also remember trying to get the halo mod to work and getting sad and angry when i couldn't.....
but yeah it has some cool bots
Blops combat training was really a sweet feature. If you lose internet for a prolonged period of time you could put em on veteran+ and it would feel just like online. They also named the bots after people on your friends list which was always pretty cool.
More like Bazookafield 1942.
More like Bazookafield 1942.
the best Bazooka warfare simulator
I wish Half-Life: Decay had Bot AI. I have no one to play it with.

That's simply not true. It's not like you can tell one guy to make a bot for a multiplayer game and three hours later it's done. Having a team of 5-10 people work for several weeks to make usable bot AI eats into development time that could be spent on more important things. When it comes to game development, you've got to realize that every last feature is on a timeframe, and inevitably things will need to be cut to make the deadline. Bot support isn't worth having a buggy, unpolished mess of a game or semi-functional core features, and half-assed bots aren't very good for gameplay- just look at Star Wars Battlefront II's bots, which in the space levels spend half their time flying fighters into walls and the other half totally ignoring the player on foot. Making believable AI takes time, which for most games could be better used elsewhere.
Bots are no substitute for real players anyways, I really can't believe anyone would say 'Oh, I have bots for the current game, therefore I have no need to buy the sequel'. All the Unreal games have had good bot support, and it never compromised their sales.
Timesplitters. 2 players, versus 10 bots. Hnnngh.
Speaking of TS2, you know what I miss?
Games that have team deathmatch with more than two teams. Seriously, why did that disappear?

Red Faction II had bots but no multiplayer :|
Anyway where are the developers who want to push the boundaries of AI?We need developers who are interested in making bots that can mimic a players behaviour as much as possible. Its kinda sad that when a next gen game comes out that graphics are the only thing touted but nobody asks about AI.

Or they are worried on how to improve Online multiplayer, instead of trying to make things that will make a game really enjoyable
Multiplayer AI shouldn't have to be a dead feature, i'm not saying put it in everygame but Multiplayer AI will make a game last a whole lot longer
