Worse.
Depends how much you thought Prometheus sucked. I meant more of the faux action girl character(s) and the parental theme in both Other M and Prometheus. AND the fact that they suck.

Metroid Devs disagreed on everything (one still insists that Ridley is female, despite no-one else agrees). I see Prometheus as a film that ruins the lore of the Alien series, but Other M got everything wrong in the writing department. "Lets reference Sylux, a Prime character, but cancel out the rest of Prime to add to a pseudo-love story." All of it was preposterous.

Why would anyone design physical armour that disppears if you're ever vulnerable, let alone the incredibly intelligent Chozo? WHY?!
To add character to Samus, who never really had character in any of the games, and to make her feel more "human" because when she's under pressure she cant fight, and then her suit has to shut down because it requires "concentration". If anything it's really ironic how the jap devs wanted Samus to be a hero but she never really acted like one because they made her seem so small in confidence. She wasn't relatable at all, and if anything she was real annoying because of it.

As for Prometheus, the thing is that they took a road somewhere inbetween staying true to the old films (Aliens + AvP) and creating something new. Just like someone who saw these films some time ago remembering only fragments of it, puting them into his film script. IMO they should have made the decission that the film takes place in the same universe as AvP and the Alien films but not on the planet shown in "Aliens". ====== As for other M and since we don't talk about it.... ...I'd say that the vanishing armor isn't the worst part of it. The worst thing is the overall storytelling. In previouse Metroid games, there was little to none video sequences. So all the players had the freedom to project their own thoughts and emotions into it. Other M takes this away by elaborating every single thing from the perspective of the story writer. We might have thought of Samus as a badass Bounty Hunter, but e.g. Sakamoto might have imagined her that way for a long time now. (or possibly he just ate something wrong at dinner that day) IMO the same disapointment would happen if you'd give Link or Gorden Freeman a voice. It just wouldn't stand a chance against our own imagination.

There's a link to an article in the Other M section of the OP (which I should get around to fixing now that Garry's removed some stuff from the forums coding thing) that really shows how bad the Other M plot is. It's not that it's just nonsensical and completely incongruous with the canon of the rest of the series, it's that it romanticises what is essentially an abusive relationship. Samus has a dedication to Adam that is dangerous to her own safety. And what are we shown to explain why Samus is dedicated to Adam like this? Absolutely fucking nothing, Adam is completely dismissive of Samus and doesn't give two shits about her safety. You know Sakamoto has said that he never really thought about Samus' character until Other M, and was aware that from the fans and from some hints in Prime that an image had sprung up of her character. So Other M is literally Sakamoto saying "I don't care what other people have made of this character, this is how I see her" disregarding the fact that a) it's completely at odds with the rest of the series, and b) its a fucking dehumanising degredation of one of the original female heroes of gaming. I really hope Sakamoto is not associated with Metroid any more, I wonder if he knows just how poorly his characterisation of Samus has been received by both the fans and the gaming press.

I feel like a replay of the Prime trilogy is in order, after dusting my Wii off with a used copy of Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition. Problem is, even though I own the three games, having the Wii controls on the first two games would be so much sweeter. It's a shame Trilogy is so expensive / hard to get ahold of.
To get my copy of trilogy I just walked into EB Games/Gamestop and then in the case is Metroid Prime Trilogy. "I didn't know this existed but I'll take it." Best buyers impulse of all time.
Yey, the Trilogy I got arrived early thanks to secret black magic rituals I cast. Thing is I owned both 2 and 3 before but got rid of them because I was scared and stupid but now I can play them again as a more sensible person. Is Hunters any good? Heard mixed reactions to it but I like the idea of a portable first-person shooter adventure.
The singleplayer is very bland compared to the main Prime trilogy, it does the multiple planets thing that Corruption does, but because of the DS's hardware these planets are even smaller than the ones in Corruption and therefore have little room for exploration. The multiplayer is great though. I don't know if anyone is still playing it online, but even with just bots it's good fun.
Ahh, so it has the option for bots too? That's good. Also, Prime 1 is getting me on edge, I'm not used to FPSing where I don't have 6 dudes gunning down people for me and only one direction to go ;-;
Also, Prime 1 is getting me on edge.
I hate wandering through the rooms where the Chozo Ghost's appear. That's what put me on edge the most when I replay through Prime, you open the door leading to the rooms and stand inbetween the doorway. Before you'd fight them and you could hear their ghostly screams even before they'd spawn.

Suits METROIDS [editline]20th February 2014[/editline] i still want a sequel
Prime series best series. I even love the pinball game (I still got the rumble pak somewhere, even though I migrated to 3DS a few years back) and I enjoyed hunters too. Wish it carried on, though. Dat sylux ending and Metroid Dread easter egg on MP3.
What be this easter egg?
In a space pirate base (home planet? one of them things) there was a scan item that said "Metroid Project DREAD is nearing the final stages of completion"
Got to Phendrana Drifts tonight and got so happy with all the snow and ice and all that good cold stuff and the music is lovely there and I want to have an igloo there so I can spend more time in the snow. Here is the lovely music.

Ghosts, darkness, bees and beelike things, this game ticks all my fear boxes (other than the ones that would be wildly inappropriate). Wish my TV was a bit brighter though, missing several important details in the shadows like tunnels and rune thingies. Possibly going to write something Metroid-related as practice. I've always said if you want something done right, do it yourself.
You're right...and you're wrong at the same time. Samus was a disgusting example of a good female character from day one. The only reason she was ever seen otherwise is because the past games left enough to imagination that you built an idealized character that in reality, never existed. It just finally took Other M to shatter this shared illusion and spell the ugliness out.
Well, day 1 there was little character but there didn't need to be. In some video games, the little "character" the better, you couldn't really fit more than a text scroll at the beginning and a few cutscenes of text on a cartridge. So unless you want it to be a focus, it's best not to waste precious space on it. Samus, like Link, Mario, and others, is a "step-into" character. The expected reaction is to play natural, explore the game, take in the atmosphere, and overcome the challenges. Yes, there was imagination involved in how we saw Samus, however there was some foundation to that. With little to go on, they drew inspiration from her actions. We knew her occupation was dangerous, that she was not hesitant in her duties (she went right back to the science outpost in Super Metroid, she responded to the distress signal herself in Metroid Prime, starting many plots herself), and was shown to be calm and collected during the endings of the Prime games and before. This does not come across at all in Other M. She's weak, uncertain, clinging to the (not even official) authority of a man who puts her life in unneccessary danger for no reason, dialing back any sort of character development that could have happened since she first set foot on Zebes. One of the main gripes people have against Samus's portrayal in Other M is the very unfortunate implications it has when you factor in her gender. It's like they went out of their way to completely pull the total opposite direction to how almost everyone saw the character, right down to her height which I feel is a very overlooked and very indicative change. It made a character who's gender was never a thing (like it really should rarely be ever, and never really in a sci-fi action adventure game)unneccessarily into a thing, and not only a thing, but a horrible, disgusting thing. All-in-all, Samus in Other M isn't just an example of a bad female character, but a bad character full stop. It really, really disgusts me that they would do such a thing to one of the most well known and iconic characters of gaming. Other M is the All-Star Batman and Robin, or Man of Steel, of gaming and should be swept under the rug along with the Zelda CD-i games and Hotel Mario.
God fucking damn it. 7 hours into a session of Metroid Prime and 11 artifacts down, I'm going to get the last one at the bottom of the phazon mines and see that god damn morph ball path after the hunter room with the phazon. I remember there's something neat down there so I try to make it across and die. Goes back to last save from 7 hours ago. On the plus side its given me a reason to play a different Metroid Prime.
In a space pirate base (home planet? one of them things) there was a scan item that said "Metroid Project DREAD is nearing the final stages of completion"
DREAD was obviously Other M, It was a warning from Retro Studios, they knew we would all dread it.
Incidentally, Metroid 1.5 sounds like some Valve-type awesomeness. Shame Retro Studios didn't pick up on it after Echoes or Corruption.
I need to play Prime and Super again, been too long.
I'm reawakening this thread since the fangame am2r (Another Metroid 2 Remake) just had an update, and it's fucking awesome. I hope the next 2D Metroid game that comes out uses some of the features, like the aiming lock.
How much of Metroid 2 is in this? Is it the whole game yet?
