I'd have to say the advent of the Real Time Strategy, in the early 2000s, helped the video game market expand (by bringing in outside influences, ie Warhammer)
Of course ten or twenty years ago will seem like the Golden Years. Nobody remembers the crappy titles, and the good titles are legendary.
The PS2 era.
I still think the PS2 has been the best console ever made in terms of game selection.
I think we have passed the golden age of gaming quite a while ago now, talking about the PS1-PS2 era where it was insanely popular and becoming a mainstream kind of thing, ideas were fresh, the tech was getting good.
Gaming has gone dry at the moment, there's very few releases that are actually good, even GTA V was a disappointment.
I think after a couple of years as the tech gets even better and more available, there's going to be another golden age. Hopefully anyway since the future of gaming is starting to look bleak.
to me, it must have been 1998-2007.
on quite the opposite though, I don't think the gaming industry has been this generic at any point before. what we see today are mostly clones and copies of other games. there's barely anything new anymore. the first metal gear solid still beats most games released today out of the water to me, and that says a lot.
everything is divided into 3 categories at this point really
blocky indie games
generic FPS
terrible indie horror
and that's about it.

Those were the days indeed, Also I noticed that gif is from the batman beyond intro.
My golden age stretches from the first Command & Conquer to the end of the HL1 era. Sven coop, Firearms, Day of Defeat etc. I had the most fun in gaming back then.
