They shouldn't wait for consoles because they're simply not meant for games like Half-Life.
You just gotta accept that while games costs more to make nowdays, they are all gonna be multiplatforms.
Of course they are available for consoles, but Source games are still way better when played on a PC. Consoles are for playing games with friends on the couch. You can't play Half-Life with friends on the couch.
*hurr durr I've never srsly played consoel shoetr b4 but everyfin i say goes becauis pc mustard raec lololol*

I kinda don't want them to simplify Half Life 3 for new gamers. I know they have to, but imagine if we got a game that didn't have simplified levels for people that can't even duck jump right. Would really make the half life universe feel better.
i know this is stupid but i giggled at mustard race
Its called the mustard race because consoles need to ketchup. [editline]8th April 2013[/editline]
*hurr durr I've never srsly played consoel shoetr b4 but everyfin i say goes becauis pc mustard raec lololol*
whats up your ass, dude? Its undeniable that while singleplayer console games exist and can be amazing, the direction consoles are taking (always online, linked social media) is obviously straying away from the singleplayer experience for a more multiplayer driven focus. The Half-Life series, among others, is clearly better for the PC platform.

Half-Life 2 felt easier to beat than Half-Life 1, and Portal 2 was designed for consoles in that it was a casual game. Don't forget those playtesters.

Then I learned of skill.cfg and I sent the difficulty to the equivalent of HL1 hard difficulty, plus a bit more. First time through ravenholm at my custom difficulty settings was a total nightmare. Died like 20 times. I'm just glad I'm not alone in thinking HL2 was a little too easy.
Wow, I've gotta get that and try it.
Once you edit the skill.cfg you have to name it something like new_skill.cfg and then have an alias command in autoexec that says alias (insert command to alias) "exec new_skill" Without that, the default skill.cfg from the .gcf will override your custom one. DON'T USE ANY COMMANDS THAT ARE ALREADY IN THE SKILL FILE OR PUT THE COMMAND IN THE SKILL FILE! The game will crash due to that causing an endless loop. I have given these instructione elsewhere and people keep crashing from endless loops. The game will also probably have some start up glitches, but it should work. The gcf overriding the custom file doesn't happen ep1 or ep2 as well. Hope this helped. Anyway, back on topic: Knowing Valve, whatever new engine they may make will likely be on par with or better than other modern engines. Valve being a perfectionist company is why they consistently make good stuff. If the new engine doesn't blow away most or all of the other modern engines, it will likely not be released until it does, just like almost everything Valve has released before. GoldSrc did (And it still works 15 years later), Source did, which means that releasing a new engine that is inferior in major areas would have large negative reprecussions for valve's reputation and also business. Tl;dr, Valve is pretty much obligated to make an engine that kicks the asses of every other modern engine.
Obligatory:
To be fair, I've gotten lost in a couple of those maps myself. Maybe going around for half an hour is a little...idiotic...but doesn't necessarily speak against the quality of the decisions made by Valve employees in response to playtester actions.

I was straight up idiotic in Portal 2 because I missed things that were right in front of me on a 20 minute basis.
What the fuck. Everyone's complaining that Portal 2 was too easy. I found it pretty damn difficult. I spent 2 hours on one puzzle and then got so sufficiently pissed off that I went into noclip to find out how to do it. I still couldn't. This was the case for pretty much all of the "Cave Johnson era" puzzles. Thinking back, could have headed for a walkthrough but I was already in noclip mode so... I feel sad now. :(

That's not to say all the puzzles in portal 2 were too easy, just they never got past the "testchamber 18" ish level (compared to portal 1, that is), which many people were hoping they would, given its a sequel and so many of the people playing would know the mechanics. Still, that's why custom maps exist.
Games should not be made for average people.
Ideally, no, games should be made for a specific audience in mind. But, that's not how business works and people need to make money.

I have the command for the game to initialize the HUD aliased to the new skill file since that is an automatically run startup command.
