My only question is, will it be a separate engine or another update?
I'm guessing it's going to be a separate engine, just like UE1-4 was!

I hope not! I love the hole updating engine jig valve is using atm.

It's cool for some time, but there will always be a time when you've updated your engine to the last.
Great example? IW's Engine.

Pardon?

They were updating it because its more cost efficient than making a new engine, but the downside 8 years later is that its still an old as balls engine with a dying mod and indie community.

That would imply that Source 2 is completely rewritten, which is outright false. The only statement about it so far, specifically about source 2, implies that it is just another iteration like valve's been doing from the start.

Except every major 'game engine' is based on old as fuck code. Do you really think Epic rewrites all their code when they show a new version of UE?

This has less to do with the age of source and much, much more to do with valve's refusal to give even the most basic level of service w/r/t the SDK.
I don't really know of any big engines that have been rewritten from scratch... id Tech 5 still uses code from their very first engine.

It's pretty much all iteration, if an announcement says it's a "new engine" it's probably just a bunch of changes - they didn't start over.
Why re-invent the wheel?
Why re-invent the wheel?
To make it rounder.
Why re-invent the wheel?
Make it work better(performance), use cutting edge technology and tricks instead of the design of the 1999's?
I think Valve has been waiting for the next gen scene to come into play before formally announcing Source 2 and showcasing it. Probably why we've been waiting this long. I expect something from them soon regarding Source 2 and/or Half-Life.

And yet UE3 is UE-fucking-3 and Source is still just source.
Why re-invent the wheel?
Because it can no longer roll.

no but UE 1 -> 2 -> 3 have all come with a ton of changes (in a relatively short period of time, no less)
But isn't the Unreal engine have more people focused on it?
I imagine the "Source Engine" team is relatively small. With most employees focused on specific games.

There was more than one 1999???

Read it twice, carefully this time.

Valve makes games, the Source engine is a by-product. Unreal make an engine as much as they do games.

I'm not sure what you mean.
Are you saying that an engine to do games is the by-product of making games?
Oh god what

Yes? They want to make a game so they made an engine to run the game on. However, currently they are just modifying the engine to their needs.

are they modifying the engine for hats?
They know how painfully slow iteration time is with current Source technology, i'm sure they see the value in having (near) instant iteration times for production.

Probably not Source 2 but they say they have a modified Source engine for Next-Gen.
Oh man, that's exciting. The fact they chose Source is cool to. I wonder how large the levels will be..

Considering the engine's limits I say probably not that large and quite possibly linear! =P
Considering the engine's limits I say probably not that large and quite possibly linear! =P
it's not like they can modify the engine or anything
it's not like they can modify the engine or anything
Definitely, Source is well-known for being almost impossible to modify...
you realize this isn't a source mod right
because i don't think you do
First image leaked of l4d3 rendered with source 2
