Dota 2 is released to the public as of 7/9. Something is going to happen at GamesCom.
Yea, Valve will present something related to water surfing. I wouldn't be surprised if they just inveted new kind of swimsuits. Sometimes I feel they would even start producing a toilet paper just to not announce next HL... :(. I hope I'm wrong. I would be happy with either HL3, L4D3 or even just short Source 2 introduction. That would make me rly happy. I can't get myself hyped anymore though. It's been too long.
While there definitely will be a playable build of DOTA 2 at Gamescom, I think there's going to be a big reveal one way or another. Even if it's simply Source 2.

I'd consider a new Source to be a way bigger fucking deal than a new Half Life. I mean one is a game, the other is a platform from which endless games may spring.

Either way, knowing Valve, they are gonna use the heck out of it. They have been using Source for how many years now. 9-10? And it still looks okay. Not the best, but still pretty good engine in my opinion.
To be honest, the only reason I'd be excited about Source 2 is if they previewed a Source 2 game as well. I mean, yes, Source 2 is exciting and it's huge news for Valve. But I would also be royally pissed if all we saw was a lousy tech demo showcasing Source 2's capabilities.
i'd be happy if they showcased a source 2 tech demo, that would mean the work is well advanced of course they're not developing a graphic engine for nothing, there's games to use it in the end, but there's no need to show or even announce games using it (yet) i believe, from valve's pov, it is best to proceed in two steps: -announce the engine and showcase tech demos -then later, announce a new game using the new engine, and showcase in game footage
But I would also be royally pissed if all we saw was a lousy tech demo showcasing Source 2's capabilities.
I'd actually be fine with just this, if it's similarly amazing like the E3 demo of Source.
It's probably hoping for too much and being too nostalgic, but if they remade the E3 2003 stuff to showcase source 2, that would be amazing. I think it'd show just how far the engine has come. Of course, it'd be likely if they DID do that then there would be brand new stuff to showcase the new features better, but to see the old E3 demo maps remade would just be awesome.
But is there really a Source 2 going to be unveiled? Maybe its just Portal2.exe? Alfred saying that the current "source" engine has branched away from Source-1 (and is a different engine entirely), makes me wonder. But it is rather vague...

Portal 2 is really Source 1.5
More than likely Ricochet 2 will be talked about at Gamescom if anything. From what I've heard some devs moved over to the Ricochet 2 development area with the release of DOTA 2.

I have doubts Source 2 will be build from scratch...
Of course it's not built from scratch, it'd be illogical to not build upon existing code.
Of course it's not built from scratch, it'd be illogical to not build upon existing code.
there's a difference from building absolutely everything from scratch and building a new engine yes, there might still be some portions of code from source (1), hell, maybe they'll even still have commented lines of code of carmack, cause they simply don't have to, but that doesn't mean source 2 can't be an entirely new engine i expect valve to show the same level of difference between source 1 and 2 as there was for, say, cryengine 1 and 2

It's so fucking weird that we're at a point where developers are selling their game by the name of the engine it runs on. Seriously, how many of the consumers that appear to give a shit actually know anything about what they're being told?
i don't understand

it was semi off topic about engine talk in general.
Why don't they give it a new name Like SilverSrc or shit.
