It looks like they hired Fake Factory to do the foliage. :v:
Do not mention that name. EVER.

speaking of fakefactory, apparently he now has pornographic graffiti everywhere in the game. I played some earlier versions, and I don't remember them having it.
the guy's too far gone. what does he even do for a living? What kind of job would that dude be trusted with?
speaking of fakefactory, apparently he now has pornographic graffiti everywhere in the game. I played some earlier versions, and I don't remember them having it.
extra realism
Left 4 Dead 3 will be the last Source 1 game and the first Source 2 game will be Half-Life 3 that is the answer to half-life 3 because they always start off a new engine with announcing a Half-Life Game (GoldSrc (HL1) Source (HL2) Source 2 (HL3))

And if you want to be chronologically correct there were 2 Source engine game released before Half-Life 2.
Source 2 hopefully means some new IPs also [editline]8th February 2014[/editline]
Just because they released a new engine with two Half-Life games doesn't mean they are going to do the same with the third.
FAKEFACTORY
I don't understand what peoples beef is with FakeFactory anyways. I understand the whole remaking actual NPCs and making them look like animes, but the landscaping and maps are done pretty well if you ignore the HDR/Bloom overkill. I never liked the guys texture alignment on his maps
Snip
But isn't that supposed to be a barren wasteland? I agree that it's nice looking, but it's changed the setting completely
But isn't that supposed to be a barren wasteland? I agree that it's nice looking, but it's changed the setting completely
A few less trees and it'd work.
But isn't that supposed to be a barren wasteland? I agree that it's nice looking, but it's changed the setting completely
Oh you know what, I didn't even think about the setting. The maps are still good otherwise. They're just not very accurate lore wise.

[t]http://cinematicmod.com/images/cm_13/comparisons/cm_13_35.jpg[/t]
Valve - Transparent, economical, humble. Fakefactory - Flashy, over the top, objective. Personally, just don't like his style. It makes it look more like Battlefield. I think HL2 is beautiful the way it is with how they were able to do a lot with a little.
Oh you know what, I didn't even think about the setting. The maps are still good otherwise. They're just not very accurate lore wise.
Lore? You mean the setting of the entire game? Lore is backstory, things you can find in-game that tell you about the world. Terrain is the fucking world itself - if that's changed, you've pretty fundamentally changed something about the game.
Do you think Valve deliberately leaked the image or was it accidental? I think it was on purpose
Do you think Valve deliberately leaked the image or was it accidental? I think it was on purpose
accidental, Valve isn't organized enough to have 'deliberate' leaks unless it's a highly architected ARG.
accidental, Valve isn't organized enough to have 'deliberate' leaks unless it's a highly architected ARG.
It's obviously on purpose and part of an elaborate ARG where we find out Valve staged 9/11 as part of the announcement of Half-Life 3. Duh.
It's obviously on purpose and part of an elaborate ARG where we find out Valve staged 9/11 as part of the announcement of Half-Life 3. Duh.
Well It was a good way to see how realistic source was.
Some pretty interesting stuff in this one. On top of mentioning Source 2 twice (starts at 6:50), in the same slide they talk about wanting to drop DirectX completely and move to OpenGL. I know Mac gamers are definitely in the minority, but I'm still really interested to see how Valve's plan changes the PC gaming market in the next few years. It's only the XboX that uses DirectX exclusively. I guess will be no HL3 on the XboX
OpenGL works on the PC. It's only the XboX that uses DirectX exclusively. Using primarily OpenGL makes sense since DirectX is only supported on two platforms and is only required on one.
OpenGL works on the PC. It's only the XboX that uses DirectX exclusively. I guess will be no HL3 on the XboX
I only watched part of the talk, but it seemed like that's not the case. I think what happens is that with Source 1, they targeted openGL with a direct binary-to-binary translation (hacky, but since it was guaranteed to be on DX9 it would work). With Source 2, they're supporting OpenGL from the getgo, and just creating HLSL (dx10/11) and GLSL(openGL) versions of their shaders as they go along. I don't think they've abandoned DX, but they certainly seem to be advocating that people do so.
Yeah. They're basically in transition from strict D3D to OpenGL. My guess is that Source 2.5 or 3 will be strict OpenGL. Which hopefully by then D3D has died off.

And then we have the problem of the Xbox being a DX-only platform.
Do you think Valve deliberately leaked the image or was it accidental? I think it was on purpose
The image is from 2011 and apparently Valve are quite upset with the person responsible. It's not intentional.
I'm hoping Mantle becomes big, since its supposed to be a low-level API.

They mentions Source 2 again in the "Music in Valve Games and Media" talk. Glad to see I'm not the only one noticing this.
I'm hoping Mantle becomes big, since its supposed to be a low-level API.
Low level doesn't mean good necessarily. In addition to that, unless PC sees some major leaps in market share, few are going to take advantage of Mantle if consoles are still the benchmark. OpenGL is good because it's an abstraction, that allows the same code everywhere. With OpenGL ES 3.0/OpenGL 3.3 you can run the same deferred renderer anywhere, Android, iOS?, Windows, OS X, and in a web browser, I'm not so sure about the next gen consoles.
