I'm hoping Mantle becomes big, since its supposed to be a low-level API.
Eh, not as much as people thought it was. Mainly it's current advantage is it's really good with scaling CPU cores.
The image is from 2011 and apparently Valve are quite upset with the person responsible. It's not intentional.
Power-point was last modified June of 2011. The screenshot slides were really the only thing of interest; the rest were primarily text, nothing to write home about. The presentation is really out of date as the only mention of OpenGL is in the context of OSX and there was no mention of Linux. Obviously Valve has significantly altered their direction since then. I assure you the leak was not intentional, just the result of a security oversight that has since been remedied.

DX and OGL has been around forever, so it's unfair to say its a failure.
DX probably won't die off until more mainstream game engines get full fledged support of OpenGL. And then we have the problem of the Xbox being a DX-only platform.
It makes sense for developers to support OpenGL. But for smaller teams it might be to time consuming and thus expensive to keep supporting both. It's only the big companies that will bring games to the XboX. Same thing with the Mantle API. Only bigger developers will benefit from it.
Probably This image started going viral on Facepunch around 3 weeks ago then this thread was made about it today and a mod replied with: not sure if that's a reference to anything im sure theres more replies now, I took that screenshot a couple of hours ago
any link to that?
eram isn't from Valve, he's a community moderator. He has no more information on it than you or I.
eram isn't from Valve, he's a community moderator. I dont think I could find that post for ages because of how much posting has been rubbed on the top of it.
I think it's safe to assume that this is fake, photoshopped.
Nope, that is a real directory screenshot; it came from the same source as the power point screenshot. As I've said before this leak was the result of a security oversight that has since been remedied. Thankfully the person responsible for the leak contacted Valve, albeit a bit late about the issue.
Either way there is one thing we can agree on: The DoD series is officially dead, because it doesn't seem like they are working on a successor to DoD:Source!
Either way there is one thing we can agree on: The DoD series is officially dead, because it doesn't seem like they are working on a successor to DoD:Source!
From what I've heard over the years, DOD:S was more or less a test-run for TF2.
I just thought of something! What if the Source 2 SDK being multi-platform (particaly Linux) because the engine running in Open GL (not by translating D3D to Open GL). I see this being very likely!

I see this being very likely!
At Steam Developer Days they talked about improving the D3D to GL translation in Source 2 so it seems unlikely that's it's GL only. They did however say that the shaders are going to be a form of hlsl that can be automatically rewritten to glsl because they want to use newer shader features, so that's something.

If windows was the only one with access to tools, it would be rather like continuing to provide it with preferential treatment.
Valve just recently released a tool to help developers convert DirectX code to OpenGL code. It's open-source too! http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/03/valve-releases-open-source-direct3d-to-opengl-translator/
The leaks got me hyped so damn much. Do you guys think they'll mention something about Source 2 or any of the leaked stuff we saw at the 2014 E3? If I recall correctly they didn't even show up in 2013?
prolly not ever
Well that's dissapointing
Ill say expect to see l4d3 announced near the end of the year running src2.
Are you sure you're not just saying that because the only info we saw of Source 2 was of chucked together l4d content? that's 3 years old?
Are you sure you're not just saying that because the only info we saw of Source 2 was of chucked together l4d content? that's 3 years old?
I have non public info under an NDA
But you just broke the NDA by saying that [editline]28th March 2014[/editline] I was looking through some of the old pages and that L4D2 in Source powerpoint thing lines up with that one resume where the guy mentioned shit like that
I have non public info under an NDA
Calling the Jira-leak "non public info under NDA" is a big move, small boy.
I have non public info under an NDA
Wow, you must feel SO special!
Man, I'm going to have children by the time I get to see/play the conclusion of the Half Life story. I was fucking nine when I played Half Life 1. Hopefully it'll conclude before I die of old age, at least I ticked off Breaking Bad's conclusion. Phew
I don't think that Valve will announce Source 2 at E3 this year as their name is not anywhere to be seen on the exhibitor's list.
And yet another E3 is passing by without any announcement of Source 2. =(
And yet another E3 is passing by without any announcement of Source 2. =(
Which was completely predictable because Valve didn't visit E3 at all and didn't plan it anyway.
