First: In DNS, there can only be one domain name. There can be many top level domains, like .com or .net, but there can only be one reddit.com and one reddit.net, for instance. Furthermore, there can be many hostnames, like lol.reddit.com, or wut.reddit.net. So, when we see thesurvivor2299.com, we can conclude that only a single entity has registered it. One, and one only. The strange thing, though, is that stream.thesurvivor2299.com has an IP that is IDENTICAL to zenimax.com AND bethsoft.com. How is this possible? DNS A records. (but wait, there's more!) Well, the first way to link stream.thesurvivor2299.com to the IP is to simply have the owner of thesurvivor2299.com create an A record (a simple domain to IP translation) that says stream.thesurvivor2299.com refers to 199.107.64.171, which is shared by both zenimax.com and bethsoft.com. That's real easy, and can trick a lot of people... but it doesn't account for something very important... When you type zenimax.com into your browser, or stream.thesurvivor2299.com, you get to the same place. And this is a problem. Why? Because there is one IP address associated with both FQDNs (fully qualified domain name. Means the host portion and everything) In fact, there are THREE FQDNS associated with the same IP address. Why does this matter? Well, because of the way web servers work. Just by knowing that there are at least 2 websites on the same server or behind the same gateway device, specifically zenimax.com and bethsoft.com, because they both share the same IP (think of it like the address to an apartment complex), there has to be a way for the server to know which "apartment" you're attempting to contact. When you set up multiple sites either on the same server or behind the same device and there's only one IP address for all of them, there has to be a way for the right website to know you're looking for it. And there are two ways to address this. You either specify a different port, or a different hostname. And this is done on the WEB SERVER. (starting to make sense?) On the web server, you specify which host headers ([url]www.whatever.com[/url], or forum.whatever.com) the site will respond to. It's like having a house number on your house, to tell the mailman that even though he knows which neighborhood to deliver your package, he still needs to go to the right door. AGAIN... this is specified by the people controlling the server. However, there is one way to get around this, and it's called CNAME. This DNS record will let you specify a particular domain name, like stream.thesurvivor2299.com to redirect to something like [url]www.zenimax.com[/url]. And this is perfectly legit and reasonable. In fact, this was my first assumption. But after searching for CNAME records for the domain, and finding NONE, I moved on to the obvious. This is what is obvious to me: There are multiple sites with the zenimax-owned IP address in question, therefore it follows that the only way to arrive at the correct website is through host headers. The fact that stream.thesurvivor2299.com resolves to zenimax.com means that in the website itself, there MUST be a host header/host binding SPECIFYING stream.thesurvivor2299.com, as there would be no other way to resolve to the same website otherwise, without a CNAME record, which there are none.
