It isn't very good.
That's what I feel whenever I play any of the 2D games. They're great but the combat system puts me to sleep. I can't get myself to play 'em.
I personally find planning moves, optimising AP useage, targeting enemy nuts etc more compelling than bad FPS engine, but each to their own.
I Love Fallout 1&2 I grew up with them. Now in saying that yes fuck yes the combat can get boring. Every time I play them now I want to play Fallout 3 or New Vegas and Fallout Tactics combat is real-time but that just makes it worst you die quicker and if your guns out of ammo the only way your really going to know is because your guys aren't shooting any more and the only reason most people play with the real time is stop the fucking long turn base that Fallout 1&2 had when your fighting 10 or more guys.
Not enough punctuation, 0/10 would not read.
On an more Fallout note: is the graphics patch thing on No Mutants Allowed actually good for Fallout 1 & Fallout 2 on Windows 7? In terms of fixing the god awful colour disaster that occurs on it.

I managed to understand him, and he has a point. The only reason I never play 1 and 2 is because the turns take forever to complete

You can turn the animation speed up, you know.
If you mean that turn based games in general take too long, well, I guess you don't like chess or American football either? Which is cool, just clarifying. I grew up around wargames and strategy games so I value "control" over "action".

If it takes more than 30 seconds to kill a single fluff enemy the combat is too slow.

Not necessarily, no. I don't like either one. My sports taste....is all auto racing, funnily enough. High speed fast paced shit. My preference for combat engines in games seems to fall right down the same lines. Slow turn-based systems bore me, actioney real-time first or third person combat makes me smile.

I see what you mean, and I have the same feelings on strategy. I still get bored when you're playing a game and doing pretty much nothing. In all the games, it was walking through towns and shit trying to do something that should be extremely easy, not like walking through tons of passages just to turn in a quest. In 1 and 2 specifically, it's the time it takes to kill something that I could probably do in real life in a shorter amount of time (ie a rat).
I value both control and action, but if there is going to be a shortage on action at least keep me intersted
The turn-based combat never bothered me too much, but the hit rate of weapons did.
The only way I could ever hit anyone was with a Sniper Rifle from 2 spaces away.
Other than that, literally no complaints on the rest of the game.
I don't like the combat because it's 100% click on a dude, dice roll. I've never been into turn based combat, with a few exceptions. It's just not my thing.

But that's what makes it so compelling, the battle can go any way, one moment you might be getting pummeled but with strategy and a fair bit of luck, you could turn the entire battle around, it could also happen the other way around, you could be dominating then your opponent gets a lucky crit in killing you.

If the combat was something more like diablo I wouldn't have a problem with it.
betthysoda has the rights to the id5 engine, right?
why the fuck don't they put fallout 4 on that shit, instead of probably using the skyirm version of the gamebryo engine?

Give me a time where Bethesda has made a good decision regarding what to make their games on.
p much meaning bethesda is fucking retarded and will never use anything other than gamebryo

If they hired competent software engineers they could actually fix all the bugs and instability of bethbryo. Despite its shortcomings its a pretty remarkable engine.
i wish you could become close enough to boone that he'd let you play a sweet bongo number on his stupid bald head.
same with caesar.

Pretty sure that's 'cause they have a lot of experience with working with the engine (which still doesn't prevent bugs due to cumulative bugginess of both Gamebryo and open-world RPGs). Which is a somewhat sensible reason, I guess.
The real reason the turn based games are better than the FPS ones is because one lets you make nut shots with a sledge hammer and the other doesn't.
Does anyone in here know of a good savegame editor for New vegas on PC, if there even is any?

Console commands.
Console commands.
savegame EDITOR - That's NOT console commands.
savegame EDITOR - That's NOT console commands.
use the console and save afterwards and bang, you just edited your savegame
Here's a list of commands: Link
You can edit every single thing with console commands you could with an editor, and in the time it'd take to download the said editor

So you want something that edits 360/ps3 saves then?

I am not really asking about console commands, i am asking if there is an editor anyone in here KNEW about?!

No, what i meant was, i am looking for an editor that can edit PC savegames.

I found this and I honestly have no idea what it does that the console commands don't.

And why is that a good thing again? Having no control over the situation to me just seemed cheap, even if the computer is favoring me in combat. I never feel like I accomplished anything by using cunning tactics because most turn based games don't have them (though early Fallout games still used VATS, which helped a bit). It also feels cheap to die or even be hit with no way of fighting back.
I should not be getting killed by giant rats literally 5 minutes into the game because they got lucky crits. I should be able to counter and control my actions, just like I can in, say, real life.
But that is just my opinion. Some people like slower and more methodical combat, which is fine. I was just raised in the crazy, adrenaline pumped age of FPSs and "action movie" games, while most people on this site grew up playing RISK or other strategy games.
Another childish thing that bugs me is the graphics, which I hate to bring up because that wasn't Interplay/Black Isle's fault. Back then, graphics just weren't as good, but I cannot get myself to play a 2D game. I would blame it on lack of imagination, but I (and not trying to sound like an arrogant prick here) am a pretty imaginative person. I just don't think things are defined well enough in 2D, if you get my meaning.
The new XCOM pulls off the whole turn based thing really well since it isn't completely based off of the soldiers skill.

The new XCOM did turn-based combat AMAZINGLY for a modern game.
I can't wait for Wasteland 2. That shit's gonna be cash.
How I always beat the final boss of New Vegas. ([sp]If I can't to the speech check to make him give up that is.[/sp])
Step 1. Buy as much C4 as I can AND a detonator. Equip it to a slot BEFORE the final battle at Hoover Dam.
Step 2. Once I fight my way into the Legate's camp (NCR, House, Independent), after I kill all the soldiers there, I place my C4 at the bottom of the stairs and take my detonator out to be ready. I tell my companion(s) to "wait" far away from the explosion to keep them safe/hold off the Legate's minions.
Step 3. Go to the Legate and make fun of his dinky mask.
Step 4. RUN LIKE HELL TO GET BEHIND MY C4.
Step 5. Wait for it...
Step 6. Watch him get close enough to the C4.
Step 7.
