If the armor was angled, wouldn't that put any part the angle is facing in danger of ricochet?
If the armor was angled, wouldn't that put any part the angle is facing in danger of ricochet?
Well, yes, but it'd be less traumatic than a direct hit - if I recall a certain Mythbusters episode, they showed a bullet ricocheting and it significantly reduced its speed (as well as re-shaping the bullet)
i'm just basing this off what i know for tank armor - as far as i can remember curved by far deflects more than angled
Not necessarily true. Angled armor doesn't deflect a bullet, but simply applies a certain amount more of the armor for a projectile to be required to penetrate in order to penetrate. That's why the T-34's armor was fantastic, was because it was applied at an angle where a projectile had to penetrate double the amount of steel than if it was perpendicular to the earth, such as the Tigers.
Curving the surface does the same principle, but adds the added likelihood for the projectile to morph, fragment, and to expel its energy in a normal (as in perpendicular to the tangent of the curve)trajectory.
If the armor was angled, wouldn't that put any part the angle is facing in danger of ricochet?
those are called bullet-traps, its something that is avoided on modern tank designs today. but since all the plates on a torso generally face outwards, or curve outwards, its very unlikely that they will ricochet upwards into the helmet or into any of the other plates
I'm going to play the original Fallout, is there anything I need to play it on a modern computer?
I'm going to play the original Fallout, is there anything I need to play it on a modern computer?
Not if you have the GoG version.
If you have the Steam version you're going to need a couple of patches; I couldn't tell you which ones though, since I just got the info in this statement from a friend who happens to have the Steam copy.
But protip: Save. Don't forget when this game was released, before the days of autosave.
[editline]1st February 2014[/editline]
Unrelated: Maybe in FO4 it wont be "Stealing" if I kill someone before taking there stuff.
i can explain the whole plot for you, gives you a good idea of what you're in for. very minor spoilers, but i'm tagging them anyways
[sp]basically you play as a foobawl player in a vault and he has to date all these anime hair girls. then you go to sleep and have a trippy wet dream. when you wake up your friends fucking explode i guess, then you gotta do something involving the enclave, i guess, but my game glitched out and everyone was fighting me so i killed everybody. also it doesn't take place in brazil.[/sp]
but why do people hate it so much around here

This could look a lot better actually
It'll go great with my golden deagle
Hey uh, remember when I asked for the FNV full-body-awareness mod because it was hidden "to fix bugs?"
Any chance someone has the Fallout 3 one too? :v:
One thing that Fallout NV sort of should have stressed more but I'm sure it didn't was the fact that the Western BoS operates in chapters, rather than as a single organization.
The one in the Mojave is just a small part of it, they pretty much also still operate along the california coast and in the areas of the first two games. There's mentions of multiple tours and such for some soldiers against them.
The brother hood is most likely still around in California, albeit with a subdued presence and fighting a guerrilla war from their MANY MANY bunkers. The war had been going on for a couple of decades, fighting started around 2246 and it was just recently that the NCR went into the Mojave region.
Because that one dude wandering the desert isn't wandering it alone.
Also, it's a Fallout game. It'd be a bit on the silly side if the main character was scarcely more powerful than moronic just-got-power-armor-training faceless paladin #29058389054. That's just not how Fallout games work. Every protagonist in the series has been a demigod.
Fallout games canon wise have it so that the main character travels around with his entire NPC cast, or well getting them as he goes along and keeping them until the end. The companion limit is a gameplay mechanic for this generation. The Isometric games had it so you had a big group, rather than one or two companions. Having more than one or two companions in the 3d games with the lack of turn based combat makes them op as shit.
A pretty well organized squad can wreck a ton of havoc if they're always on the move like the Player characters are.
why are the helmet tubes exposed?
Prototype technology that hadn't yet had its weaknesses exposed in battle before the people responsible for developing it disappeared.
why isn't the armor sloped and angular, like tank armor?
Sloped armor on a tank is easy enough to do and doesn't inhibit mobility or combat capability. Sloped armor on a person, however, is very difficult to do and does inhibit mobility and combat ability.
obviously these could be somehow explained, but the truth is that very few things actually make sense in fallout power armors. they're just meant to look cool.
Exactly. They can be explained logically, as I demonstrated, or they can be explained by "Rule of Cool". After all we are talking about a game that revolves around people shooting ten foot tall mutants in the face with laser rifles, not exactly a milsim here.
FO3/NV armors aren't as cool as FO1/2 though.
Giant lumbering metal person vs what looks like a knight from monty python and the holy grail.
one of the examples I usually bring up in Bethesda and some of their conversions was the fact that they didn't really understand how to properly make some isometric stuff 3d. The T-45 should have been more walking tank, thick and sluggish, sort of looking like the Terminator armor, but it looks rather thin, mobile and agile despite having people say otherwise.
The T-51 has problems in the newer games to me since it looks like they just saw the helmet and a part of the upper chest, then did their own thing for the rest of it.
Along with the fact that it appears as if its mint, despite even in the fallout 1 setting of just a couple generations after, they've already began to modify it.
They also didn't really translate the combat armor that well either. This looks like it's from a stormtrooper in 40k, it's awesome. The Mark 2? Slight boost to it. In fallout NV, they were like, The fuck? And made versions of it that looked more like the original.

Uh..
This ones a bit better.

[t]http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110406022234/fallout/images/6/6d/CombatArmorReinforcedMKII.png[/t]
Those look fucking awesome. Also the creation of the Ranger patrol armor and the elite ranger duster armor was basically a response to distance themselves from Bethesda's nonsensical military thing.
In fallout NV, they were like, The fuck? And made versions of it that looked more like the original.
Well, yeah, considering Obsidian is partially old Interplay, of course they'd do that. Remember those beginning perks like "Small Frame" and such that you could pick in the very beginning that had downsides?
Thank goodness they added those back in NV. I'm replaying 3 and it felt like something was just straight-up missing.

F3/NV's combat armor doesn't actually look too bad IMO.
It literally only protects 25 percent of the torso.
[editline]1st February 2014[/editline]
If my body armor only protected my tits, I'd be a bit concerned. Stomach and back are fully exposed.
It looks like cheap mercenary armour.

Raiders wear armor that literally only protect their nuts and the front-side of their feet. I don't think anybody there really cares that much.
I'm going to play the original Fallout, is there anything I need to play it on a modern computer?
Get the High Resolution Patch (should be in the OP, if not just Google for it and it should be one of the first hits), and if you've got the GOG/european version of the game, grab the Children Patch too (without it you just straight up won't have kids in the game, this is purely cosmetic in F1 but has much further going consequences in F2) and that should do it.

Probably the most sensible raider armour has to be this one:

I'd totally play through the game as big pimpin' the rogue BOS paladin with golden power armor and a pimp-boy

I think people just thought the whole [sp] Coach suddenly being an Enclave colonel despite the fact the Enclave should have been wiped out in the west by now and literally turning cartoony evil[/sp] made people irk. I could be wrong, it's first installment, things could change for better or worse.
You gotta hand it to them, they did pretty decent on the location imo.

The characters in Brazil feel out of place for an odd reason. It's literally the same thing for that Willow mod.
