Fallout 3 has an amazing world and atmosphere but bad writing.
New Vegas has amazing writing and characterization but a terrible world design, at least from a gameplay standpoint. New Vegas also has various gameplay improvements over 3 merely from being a more recent game.
At least that's how I see it.
I disagree, I like New Vegas' world a lot more besides some things like a higher amount of invisible walls.
New Vegas (the city) actually feels like it could be a functional city, or at least it does a better job than Megaton or Rivet City. Megaton is just "WOOWEE LOOK AT ALL THIS SCRAP GOSH DARN THERE'S AN A-BOMB RIGHT IN THE CENTER"; with New Vegas, you've got farms around the outside, water pipes running around from lakes to pumping stations, trading posts, and plenty more room to imagine housing a sizable population. Sure, it's not to a great scale for gameplay reasons, but in general everything feels a lot more believable in New Vegas. More like an actual society, less like a society drawn up around an exciting aesthetic and gameplay facilitation.
tbh, the only part of nv that feels even slightly empty is the route to vegas, which is supposed to be your empty highway to vegas and revenge
New Vegas did need more time though, the world was a bit rushed. The city itself was way too small, and I feel like regions like Freeside, Westside and North Vegas could have been a lot bigger, and had more stuff to do in them.
Fallout 3 can't really be compared on the same level, while Fallout 3's scale was cool, there was very little time put into Fallout 3's setting and atmosphere.

Most complaints boil down to the absurd third of the map that is blocked off by a cliff and entirely unfinished, and the fact that most everything outside Vegas feels pretty underdone. Even New Vegas itself is a big mound of wasted potential, what with the redundantly Freesidey Westside, the unnecessary and annoying to traverse sewers, the nonthreatening South Vegas, the MANY unusually-intact-but-locked houses in the north, and the general cramped nature of Freeside.
It made THE WHOLE NAMESAKE OF THE GAME seem small and largely ignored. I'd wager a guess that New Vegas is only slightly larger than the Imperial Isle from Oblivion, and with less fun quests to perform in it.
I don't understand how people say Fallout 3 has better world design. 90% of the map is charred, barren, hills. Every town is a fucking mess, and the metro and majority of DC were a nightmare to navigate.
The debris piles/walls all over DC annoy the hell out of me, partly because the metro is so barren and uninteresting to walk through, but mainly because its been 200 years and NOBODY has bothered to clear even a tiny goat trail over this pile of shit?
Fallout 3 was absolutely ground breaking, (you still remember that first time you step outside the vault?)
And fallout NV had great gameplay additions
And with TTW NV basicly becomes the best god damn game ever
I give Fallout 3 quit a bit of shit for being no where near as good as New Vegas, in fact I think New Vegas is better than Fallout 3 in every way. I still reinstalled Fallout 3 last month and without mods played 42 hours in 4 days, so it isn't a bad game by any means.
Only thing 3 has over NV is the amount of polish. 3 had a lot more time to develop original assets, bugfix (for what THAT was worth), and so on. It just feels like it comes together so nicely, while NV feels like it derives a lot from 3 to the point where it feels more like a REALLY GOOD expansion pack instead of a game on its own.
I love New Vegas to bits, I definitely rate it above F3, but honestly it's biggest problem is it's amount of wasted potential.
However this isn't Obsidian's fault. There are script files with comments referring to last-gen console limitations which put a halt to a lot of their better and more expansive ideas. This coupled with being rushed by Bethesda I feel put a huge amount of pressure on them to have to be more sensible with their world-building, which is where Obsidian really shine.
I feel this is where a lot of the complaints about New Vegas come from, the strip couldn't be bigger because of engine and console limitations. The world had to be made emptier because Obsidian simply didn't have time or the resources.
Of course this is just speculation, the development might not have been as pressured as I'm making out, but it certainly seems to be the case.

The game originally shipped with a TON more NPCs and shit. They were largely patched out because the game ran like shit on consoles, and it was unstable on PC.
oh dear.
I've been playing a dangerous game...
I'm only wearing light/no armour, every gun has been rebalanced to do ACTUAL real life gun damage, i am running a mod called helpless falling, with double fall damage and to top it off, i took a perk called bring it on, which lowers both my and the enemies DT (damage threshold) BY 5
in conclusion, i was shot and killed by a single 9mm round going into my hip
I had my head smashed open by a baseball bat
I have been eaten by geckos
and i have fallien to my death.
I have not even left Goodprings yet.
I dislike real-life damage because automatics become OP as fuck. At the same time, they're usually too underpowered in vanilla for me to want to use them over a hunting rifle.

At least the service rifle becomes actually useful now :v:
Going 'round double tapping bandits with a god damn awesome gun.
I might play New Vegas again. Are there any cool mods? And did anyone make diagonal running animations?
EDIT: also wasn't there a mod that made better player physics, i.e. you don't start moving at full speed the second you hit forward?
Anybody here have experience with FOMM? I recently tried installing it on a windows 7 machine, but when I try to launch the game it just launches the games default launcher, overwriting all my load orders and configurations and such.
Also I installed TTW but the title screen still says "Fallout: New Vegas", what's up with that?

File > launch game > launch NVSE

"NVSE does not appear to be installed"
I don't understand why I'm having all these problems, I followed the exact same installation procedure that I used on a different computer and it worked fine. I've never heard of this "NVSE" before.
thread on /v/ discussing fallout 3, someone brought up the mobile enclave base
[t]http://www.computersnstuff.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/f3-broken-steel/Broken_Steel_5.jpg[/t]
That was a pretty cool set piece
would have been more awesome if it was ACTUALLY MOBILE
even if it was just slowly moving around
Or even better, picture it
You and your brotherhood soldiers set up a massive roadblock with artillery and mines and the base is slowly moving towards you, guns raining fire upon you and youi have to hold out till you can charge inside, now THAT would have been a climax.

New Vegas script extender
It is literally required in every single mod there is.
no wonder you can't run TTW

I can run TTW on my laptop fine, I never had to install NVSE then. That's what puzzles me.
And why does the title screen say "Fallout: New Vegas" instead of "Tale of Two Wastelands" like it does on my laptop? I can't help but feel like that indicates a larger problem.
TTW actually doesn't require NVSE.
Regardless, afaik there's no reason to not install NVSE, and FOMM requires it to run, yes? Seeing as the button says, "Launch NVSE", I imagine that is the issue.

A skyrim mod made by a Facepuncher. Might work for FO, doesn't seem to be game specific.

I recommend setting friction to 8 instead of 6.

Does it work? Have you tested it?
Does it work? Have you tested it?
No, it doesn't. It's a SKSE plugin, so you might be able to get it working with NVSE if you knew how to.
Seems like a stupid question, but wth TTW installed is there a way to purposely start a game in the Mojave? I'd rather have separate DC and Vegas characters
I believe there's an option to switch between them in the .ini
Does anyone know any good quest mods except for FNVB, FNVB2 and The Inherition?

There's a mod out there that lets you pick between starting points when you start a new game

As the page loaded, I thought this was going to be some kind of adaptation of the LotR story to NV in quest form, but the description of the actual thing was just as funny
