You're probably just getting shitty teams because Zed has a decent team presence, but it's totally possible to have an awesome score and still be useless to the team. I've played games where the 2/3/20 malphite is carrying and the 20/8/0 katarina is just cleaning up.

It's very rarely that people don't get tier two boots any time after 1, maybe at the most 2 core items. But it also depends on the character; AP Carries will get boots asap, some tanks might hold off in order to decide between Ninja Tabi/Mercury Treads, but it is rare.

they changed the boots a bit over the season, i really dont upgrade boots if i dont need to, and ill usually only pick up basic boots if i got the 325g lying around.
it is situational on most champs though

Actually, the kiting doesn't slow you down, especially if you Q between auto-attacks. When fighting blue/red, you don't need to kite, as the axe-head hits them from close range anyway. Right now, it's kind of useless to do that though, as the increased damage doesn't even apply.
