I don't really think VES threw, more that they were too cautious and TSM just waited them out and they made their strike at exactly the right time.

LoL started as a fair F2P game(with minimal P2W elements) when there were practically none. Well deserved praise back in the days, but now it's overrated as fuck.
While F2P models got better, LoL's got even worse by making every champ 6k instead of every third like it was 3 years ago and by reducing the IP gain. Now add the ridiculously expensive skins and rune system(thank allah for OP runes like armor seals because otherwise we wouldn't have half the champions we own).
hell, I have over 6000 games played when you combine normal games, all three seasons ranked and custom games and I still miss few 6k champs, gave around 60 euros and I still have only few real, not free or legacy skins even tho I only bought them when they were on sale(excluding Tyrant Swain because it's fucking amazing best skin ever).
It doesn't deserve the praise anymore, quite the opposite.

i just play my pool of champions and i notice oh i have 7k ip, what to buy hmm.
if you just play instead of focusing on farming IP you'll feel you'll unlock faster.

just lock him down he's too squishy. 1v1 he's strong though, in teamfights he do jack shit.

His healing every three strikes thing is ridiculously strong early on, they are probably going to readjust it a bit. His resurrect passive has a way too short CD but at the same time it won't save you in most situations.
