You can play him midlane toplane or jungle.
Due too most jungler getting less Xp/Gold in the jungle, jungle lee-sins are generally more tank oriented,
and toplane/midlane is more oriented at retarded amounts of AD
Other players not paying attention, or reacting poorly to ganks is always a problem for low level jungling.
However as lee sin, especially if you have an aggressive build, you should be able to gank any lane(on your own) as long as you hit your shit.
[B]Jungle:[/B]
Runes: Armor yellows, Magic Resist blues, Any combination of MS/AS/AD for the other runes.
Start: Machette + 5 Red pots or Dorans blade (Dorans start requires extra AS(or lifesteal) in runes)
Skillbuild: R->E->Q->W (2 points in W) or R->Q->E->W (This is more oriented at counter-jungling)
Items: Something like: 1-2x Dorans blade -> Amor boots -> Spirit of the Elder Golem -> (Aegis -> Locket) -> Sightstone -> Randiuns | Banchees Vail ]
You can also run him Jungle with more aggressive build, and go Tiamat -> Sightstone -> Defensive items, or just straightup go the Lane build.
However if you don't snowball with the more aggresive builds you'll be in trouble.
[B]Lane (Top or Mid)[/B]
Runes: Armor yellows, MR Blues, AD Reds, AD Quints
In lane you should try to abuse your early game, there are very little champions who have a stronger early game.
Use your W before you trade with the enemy or use it to disengage, if you manage to land a Q on him you basically win every trade.
During midgame (especially if you are ahead) a Q->E->R->Q->E + ignite combo should be able to 1 shot almost everyone in the game.
Skillbuild: R->Q->E-W or R->E->Q->W (against Irelia)
The damage on Q is too high to not max first, you can put an extra point in W if you really need it.
Start: Dorans blade, Armor + 5 pots, Boots + 4 pots(for mid mainly) or Dorans Shield
Items core: [i]Tiamat[/i] -> Hydra | Armor/Mr boots | Giants belt or Spectre's Cowl
Offensive options: Last Whisper | Maw of Malmortius | Blood Thirster | Mercurial Scimitar | (Trinity Force) | (Blade of the Ruined King) | (Ghostblade)
Defensive options: Guardian Angle | Mercurial Scimitar | Warmogs | Banshees | Spirit Visage | Randuins | QSS | Sunfire Cape | (Thorn Mail)
Dont forget to gank so you can be a better Lee jungle than cold

Is Syndra considered viable? I really like the champ and do good with her in general but keep hearing she aint worth it.

Yesterday I reached silver 2 and I'm proud of it. It was kind of hard for me to get into the game since I never played dota before, not even in wc3.
syndra is good but fairly hard to master compared to most other ap carries
Syndra is good if you know how to play her and not many people seem to be able to. You can nuke someone super hard but at the moment so can people like Fizz and Zed who are a lot more mobile than her and probably deal even more damage.
She'll be great once everyone else is unable to nuke each other from 100 to 0

Syndra is super strong and can bully a lot of champs nobody plays her atm because every assassin exists and gragas/orianna are better for teamfights, you can definitely carry games if you're good at her though because the ability to delete someone from the game and stun at a million range is pretty stronk
her highest possible damage ult where you set up and time your balls to have the most you can possibly have is the main reason people say she is difficult but if you just know how to max range stun people you can do pretty well every game as even just dfg + 60% of your ult is enough to finish off most champions
