playing ranked is definitely worth it you don't get idiots reporting you for unskilled which decreases your normal mmr so you get matched with more idiots who will do the same

most of the 450 IP champions are really good for starters. garen, annie, ryze and yi mainly. tristana is also a pretty good, cheap adc ("attack damage carry" if you dont know)
if you want more insight on champions you can look at the official champion spotlights but almost all of the older ones are terribad.
as for builds just follow the recommended items for now honestly, and build according to the game, dont go full damage if you're dying a lot for example.

I've been buying items according to my need. If I'm taking damage a little too much, I grab some health. If I'm avoiding damage pretty good, then I go for damage or speed. It's worked so far!

The recommended list is a godsend.

Okay so, just wondering. What would be the best course of item builds on Tristana?
My friend is thinking that building both Phantom Dancer and Shiv with a Bloodthirster and IE with Berserkers would be best because it gives max crit chance.
Wouldn't the standard Berserkers, IE, PD, BT, LW and GA/Defensive Item would be best?
I just think that the 100% crit route wouldn't do as much damage because it doesn't ignore armor. Wouldn't the standard second way do the most damage?

and you can honestly get it much earlier than a lot of people do
LW should preferably be your second or third item
There is NO excuse to not have LW by your fourth item
