I'm competent enough to play this game properly enough, having played since February of this year, but my teammates just drag me down with them. And whenever I try to help, they scramble their separate ways out of team fights, go push lanes that don't need to be pushed, etc.

To be fair those are the ***WORST*** of Bronze.
There is a huge difference between them and the average bronze player.

so why exactly is warwick not considered viable/not played more often? he seems pretty strong from what i've seen, has crazy sustain in jungle even without spamming q. that's one of the only negatives i can find about him is his q mana cost, and maybe his e for being slightly less useful than just giving him an ms steroid ability.

No way to actually stick on his enemies, apart from the initial ult.
Speedboost doesn't help shit when they can still run from the rest of your team.
Meanwhile Udyr can at least stun them multiple times for example.
Doesn't do that much damage by himself. He's tanky as fuck but the damage is still a bit lacking.
sustain doesn't matter when the clear speed is garbage tho

meh i've seen champs with equal or worse clear speed played competitively like shen, but there's not much of a comparison there with his huge amount of utility.
tbh though clear speed doesn't matter as much past the first couple jungle clears, and you can easily keep up with most other junglers when you have blue at the start.

In season 2 perhaps. Very very rarely in s3. He also doesn't have any map pressure before 6, or after he's blown his ultimate. He's better top if you're going to play him at all.

If you can't get out of Bronze, it's an L2P issue from [I]your[/I] side. If you truly deserve to be in a better league, you will win the majority of your games.

Trust me, I know how to play this game, I'm not that fucking stupid. If I need to build a certain way for my team, then I'll do it. If my team needs wards, I'll get them. Etc, etc.
I remember one match where I asked our Leona if she could get wards for the jungle are so we have vision for team fights and stuff, and she replies with a swift "fuck off" and proceeds to buy a brutalizer.
We ended up losing that match.
Now, before you go all "The support isn't the only person who should buy wards," let me just say that 1. I tried to get as much vision as I could, and 2. Whenever I play support, I always try to get sightstone mid-game so my team can have vision in jungle and whatnot.
I just asked Leona in a nice way (cause I know where shit-talk gets you, which is absolutely nowhere) if she could get a sightstone for vision and then flips me off. She even said that if I kept on typing, she wouldn't play at all. I thought she was bullshitting until she actually started to do it. Even when I wasn't talking to [i]her[/i] she wouldn't budge. So eventually, I muted her so that she would actually help the team out. I then got a report notification for "Negative Attitude".

If you're in bronze, you deserve to be in bronze. One of my IRL friends who sucked total dicks and played like a true bronze player got put into Bronze 5 after promos, I laughed at him and made fun of him then he quit.
He came back a while ago and dedicated himself to getting out of that shithole, now in Silver 5 ([url=http://puu.sh/5Duvr.png]woah a fuckin graph[/url]) and it took him like 2 weeks of a few games a day to do it, just spamming Aatrox and Lee jungle.
I mean this guy is [I][B]BAAAAAAAD[/B][/I] at the game, so if you cant make it out but he can, then you belong in that hellhole.
