No it's not. People discovered that if you die to spikes in Sacrifice Room while holding the Missing Poster trinket, you are shown a piece of jigsaw puzzle on Isaac's death letter. Reddit TBOI community started to collecting puzzle pieces and it turned out that these puzzles show death letters of deaths which are required for unlocking The Lost. But at one point or another, somebody hacked the game and solved the secret too soon.
IMO, they should do that again in DLC, such secrets are pretty neat and fun to follow.
It is still a bit of a silly secret, requiring not only a community effort and much observation (one puzzle piece for each death, everyone needs to pool together for all the pieces hopefully, put it all together) but then for you to do stuff reliant on RNG (getting mulliboom spawns is a chore) in order to basically throw away 4 runs in a row, hoping not to mess that up and start all over. I don't really agree with it just based on the length, tediousness, and silly nature of actually getting the secret, not so much the puzzle bit. I mean, that part would've been cool but people will do what they do.
Can't say I'm sympathetic at all.
Did anyone ever play Black Ops? It's exactly like those bullshit zombie easter eggs where you had to hit a clock with a knife 3 times then fire off 4 crossbow bolts or whatever
It's not a fun easter egg it's just an insane string of coincedences you have to do. I'm fine with no more secrets like that.
you're the exact kind of person they were talking about
instead of discovering a secret as a community, people would rather have everything handed to them on a silver platter. the whole appeal of isaac is gradually unlocking stuff, and having this big secret revealed after weeks of searching would have been an awesome thing. but people soiled it and now we won't get something like that again.
Can we, as a species, just stop putting dark levels in videogames? I swear, dark levels are the 21st-century version of water levels.
They can be done well but 99% of the time they are just more annoying than a regular level
Sometimes it's hard for me to distinguish black spiders from black floor, regardless of the red blinking

No, we like unlocking secrets. We don't like jumping through flaming hoops like a circus animal. There are so many ways this secret arg could have gone wrong I'm surprised they even went through with it.
Funny how this whole thing made everyone, devs and fans, upset.

And it's really hard to see the red damaging trails that some enemies have when you're in the womb/utero.
Quite honestly requiring a player to get lucky with RNG to find a particular item then willingly sacrifice that run to get a tiny part of one of the puzzles isn't that great either. A secret should be something that someone with a ton of spare time should be able to figure out on their own, it's not a community arg it's just an in-game secret, if only because there are so many items ingame you can get even before you start unlocking secrets.

They could have at least made the puzzle gradually build up over the death screen rather than just showing you one piece at a time.
I personally would've preferred if information were cryptically drip-fed to players instead of deliberately encouraging them to throw their run away because they had RNG bless them with a mysterious trinket. I mean I understand the thematic implications of having the players commit suicide in order to uncover the puzzle, but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth to think that I'd need to throw time and effort away toward an RNG-centric puzzle that may not even uncover anything new, I could very much get the same puzzle piece each time. What's most souring is that it'll ruin any sort of discovery for players who join after the fact, as there's no longer a puzzle to solve, the trinket is now worthless to them and the code associated with it will be left on the wayside.
If I were the one in charge of how the puzzle would be managed, I'd have the game keep track of which puzzle pieces you've attained, but not in an obvious manner. I'd have trinkets, all pill types, and all card types be a part of the collection. It's possible to get platinum god without once touching the Tick, for instance. Now on the collection screen, you select the page with the Lost Poster then select the Lost Poster itself, boom it brings you to a screen where your puzzle progress is tracked, ensuring that you'll not get duplicates and so players in the future can still participate without having a hopeless amount of manhours ahead of them. Part of me would want to gate the unlock prerequisite behind completing each page of the puzzle but I think that'd be too evil unless the puzzle pieces required were less numerous and time-consuming to acquire.
Ed managed to gate the bosses to needing to unlock their respective floors. Why was something similar not done with this character's unlock pre-requisites? Even if the pre-requisite was as simple as "collect 1 puzzle piece" it'd prevent players from just looking up how to unlock character easy-peasy as they'd still need to go through the unlock process of getting the trinket in the first place.

Nah, see I like secrets. That's hardly a secret because how are people supposed to come to any of those conclusions naturally or figure out this arbitrary sequence.
Also would it have been? Would it have been intensely awesome after weeks of searching our reward is a Dante must Die mode character?

a totally optional secret that is only there to reward people that want to discover it is making people 'jump through flaming hoops' huh
The biggest design flaw with this secret was giving the character steam achievements and giving him item unlocks. If he didn't have these there would be less incentive to datamine for it.
Edit: It shouldn't be required for any form of Platinum God either.

Yes it is. If you think unlocking that secret isn't jumping through flaming hoops then I simply don't know what to tell you.

Yes because that's something that a totally sensible person would think of doing and totally wasn't datamined like the secret itself. Sure.
Who knows, there might have been another clue pointing towards that

It isn't required for Platinum God, it's required for True Platinum God.
Picking wrong photothingajigament after beating [sp]mom[/sp] because running around.
Argh!
also guys lets be real there's no universe in which this secret takes more than a day because someone would've datamined it
you simply can't ask an entire group of thousands upon thousands of people all to play fairly

Do we really need to censor Mom, the Heart and It Lives anymore? Anyone in this thread knows about them and if they don't it really shouldn't matter.
They were in the first game so these people would have to be living under a rock and not care as much anyways.
really the thing that's annoying me most about this whole thing is the devs attitude of "ok fine no more secrets because some people datamined it"
really the thing that's annoying me most about this whole thing is the devs attitude of "ok fine no more secrets because some people datamined it"
From what I've read here (haven't actually listened to the interview), the devs basically said "ok fine no more big cryptic secrets like it", which I'd be totally fine with.
Isaac literally killed my laptop
Like I went into a devil room and the whole thing came crashing down and now my computer won't fully start properly
This is definitely the hardest challenge in the game
Man I told you not to take all those deals with the Devil. That guy shouldn't be trusted.

I don't know what It Lives is, and I've played Rebirth for 13 hours and the original for 14 hours now.
Can we not spoiler basically everything that was in the original by now?
Fuck challenge #4
Jesus Christ, clutch killed Isaac with blue baby with one spirit heart remaining. Most nerve wracking fight ever

Edmund can bitch and moan all he wants for all I care. When you make cryptic bullshit like that, expect people to datamine it.

sure that's fine but the way edmund and tyrone are throwing a little fit over it is just extremely childish

How about people that are deathly afraid of spoilers stay out of this thread?
You can spoiler tag stuff if you want to, but for a thread like this spoilers are expected.
I hate the fact that the Mitre becomes an actual hindrance now, when you acquire enough heart containers. So many soul hearts just going to waste...
I hate the fact that the Mitre becomes an actual hindrance now, when you acquire enough heart containers. So many soul hearts just going to waste...
12 heart containers is not something you want to have in general unless you have a reliable way of spawning red hearts.
Black hearts and soul hearts turn literally worthless
[editline]dicks[/editline]
Having 11 hearts and one empty space is good enough, just enough to use soul/black hearts as a disposable "shield" for 2 damage(or 1 after Depths) as long as you have more of them on the current floor.
So I just realized that with the ability to choose a seed, you could (sort of) have a race.
1. Pick a seed that no one has played before
2. Share it with a bunch of people on twitch
3. Everyone streams at once and sees who beats Mom first
Though I guess people having different items unlocked would be a problem, right?

There's already a small competitive scene that does that with the original Binding of Isaac + Spider mod that adds seeds.
it's called BOILER and the price pool was 1k euros or dollars(or was it 1k for first place?).
There's also gonna be a new season with Rebirth afaik
