I'm really annoyed with Edmund's resistance to add proper descriptions to items in Rebirth on the grounds that "it'll ruin the mystery."
There's already a mystery that has nothing to do with item descriptions: that awe-fueled reaction to seeing an item you have not yet seen (or you forgot what it looked like). You don't know what it is or what it does, you just want it so you can add it to your collection. That's mystery enough. Once you pick it up and use it once, there's no more mystery to it unless it has a secret use.
Risk of Rain gets by this perfectly. The game tells you discrete statistics for what the items do, and there was still that air of mystery surrounding them when you first encountered them, you'd go out of your way to complete the item log even if there were objectively better items available that you could have chosen instead (although in RoR's case this would only be true for shops and use items since every item you get is based on a random roll and there's no tangible downside to picking up everything that's not tacked down).
Hell, the pills in BoI do this perfectly too. When you first encounter one, you want to get it to find out what it does, and then once you find out, then the game doesn't hesitate to keep it secret from you unless you forgot what the pill you took looked like; the exact same kind of mystery you'd get if you forgot what all the items looked like. Since it refreshes the pill rotation every run, it keeps that mystery persistent across runs, even though you may remember pill effects you won't know the pill's particular effect until you get it and try it.
For fuck's sake, the only thing that should really be kept mysterious are secret uses of items such as the Guppy combo or using the Polaroid to access the Chest for the first time, there's nothing gained from keeping basic uses of items secretive to the person who has them in their item collection.
A bestiary wouldn't hurt either. Risk of Rain's monster log mechanic is a nice way to give you some insight on the monsters you're fighting and I'm sure BoI could do similarly with enemies that many of us have killed thousands of by now.
I think Edmund is a kind of "love him and hate him" kind of developer. Not love him OR hate him. He does a lot of cool shit, like making really good games, but he also periodically does things that people are bound to fucking hate.
Personally I'm hoping he's going to grow out of the practice of putting memes in his games. Some people will find them funny for a week or two, then they get REALLY old REALLY fast, and end up making the game look even more dated than normal as time goes on.
Like, shoop da woop and "pills here" were already several years outdated when BoI came out. I wouldn't be surprised if Mewgenics has things like doge, arrow to the knee, and the space core from Portal 2.

Aren't the items and their descriptions generally pretty self explanatory anyway? Some of the descriptions are just incorrect e.g. saying something's a tears up when it's actually a damage up, but that's a different issue.
Trinkets could really use descriptions, though, especially as their effects are so subtle. I think he was planning on doing that, anyway (and a bestiary along the lines of Spelunky, IIRC).

Many of the items do have descriptions that roughly match what they do. Nun's Habit is the "Item Martyr", Dead Cat is "9 Lives", Mom's Knife is "Stab stab stab." But there are a number of them that are not even close to being descriptive.
Blood Lust is "Rage", well that doesn't tell you that much other than possibly hinting at being a berserker item if you're thinking about it already.
Loki's Horns is just "Tears Up" and makes no mention of the cardinal cross shot that there's a chance of firing.
Lucky Foot doesn't say anything about being immune to getting bad pills.
Not to mention all of the holy items that only have the description "You feel blessed"
It's not too much to ask for descriptions that are both straightforward and correct.
There's nothing wrong with having the item collection screen show discrete stats either. One way or another, that information is going to get plastered all over the wiki and there's nothing Edmund can do to stop it; there's no harm in simply integrating that information into the collection screen.
If he wants to be anal about it he could make it so the detailed descriptions only show up after collecting the item x amount of times, making detailed collections a long-term thing for players to strive for instead of the 1-time pickup deal that we have now, especially with the really bad items on the table that we set and forget nowadays.

Case closed I guess. At least he's considering fleshing out the collection screen.
Anyone else catch this on the Isaac subreddit?

hopefully in redux I can combine more stuff with ipecac, I just picked it up on accident.

I know who he is, but I still don't understand the comment
wait is danny b not making the music for rebirth?
not really liking the new art style but hopefully it will grow on me.
um it looks the same?
So it looks like I'm in the minority who think the new track is fucking amazing
So it looks like I'm in the minority who think the new track is fucking amazing
i like it. it's different but it's still great. i hope the atmosphere of the levels change a bit to fit the new soundtrack though. it would feel weird seeing the same basement and cave i've seen a hundred times before but with new music.
i'm gonna miss the unique danny b tracks though.
I literally cant wait for this shit. My biggest complaint about Isaac, was that certain items totally invalidated the usefullness of others.

I like it, but IDK, it's hard to put one's finger on. It seems more generic somehow, and it doesn't have quite the same otherworldly quality the original had. Plus the melody isn't nearly as memorable.

Apparently so:

The game and the expansion. I already have them.
What an amazing bundle.
Every game is gonna suck shitload of hours from you
Except Hack, Slash, Loot. That game is mediocre at best.
So, is the purist basically "pray to god that you get a super-item"?
Looks like Nicalis has finally put Rebirth info on their site. A Q2 release date is planned.
I don't think that the game is gonna be 100% done before the end of March unless they've kicked it into overdrive without anyone noticing. Q3 sounds more realistic.
If it's actually gonna be released in Q2, I'm gonna be the happiest person ever

Not surprising, to say the least.
Ech, sounded way too good to be true
Another Rebirth item revealed, "Thunder Thighs"

One thing I wonder is if he'll apply sensible rebalances to existing items that seem "fine" but not really thematic.
For example, why does SMB Super Fan grant +1 heart? If anything it'd reduce your health but give you +2 everything else, making it into a high risk; high reward kind of item instead of a raw all stats up upgrade that it was intended as. If I wanted an all stats up, I'd hope for the Super Mushroom. Making the all-stat items diverse in this way would make them more interesting to pick and choose from.
I would appreciate just a general overview of existing items and figuring out exactly what they're for.
What exactly is lemon mishap supposed to be used for? What in the fuck is wiggle worm supposed to do to change how I play?
New stuff I guess.
Why does this screenshot matter? Because render-to-texture is working in Isaac Rebirth!
That many familiars won't even work tho. They lag behind too much to be maneuverable
the new artstyle is growing on me
Just had an interesting run. I picked up Number One, Cancer, The Small Rock, and Mom's Underwear which let me fire so quickly I was basically pissing pure streams of bloody liquid death across the entire screen.
However, near the end of the run I accidentally picked up Chocolate Milk-- FUCK. It was like kidney stones to my build because I then had to manually mash out the piss which was now a weird whitish color.
Treasure rooms are good folks, but pay attention to synergy :(.
