the pixel art looks great, go home
i like the art now, it's grown on me. if they just used the smooth flash looking art style again it would look like the same game. the pixelness makes it look fresh.
Retro pixel art is something that needs to die. No matter how hard they tried, it looks much, MUCH worse than a rush job in flash. ( aka. The original BoI)
I unfortunately cannot shake off that this might become the perfect example of "perfection through limitation", and the paradox of how things tend to turn out significantly better when you are severely limited in their manifestation than having all of the resources you need to create the 1:1 idea from your head.
So what if the original flash style was a "rush job"? It was a perfectly executed rush job. It manages to be charming, disturbing, as well as covering a wide spectrum of other emotions, and literally no one complained about it. A reasonable number of people complained about the new art style, however.
Even having said all that, I am not even remotely denying the possibility that the new art style will become just as kickass if not more kickass once the eye is adjusted to it, but at the same time sharing a certain dose of skepticism can be good sometimes.
Imo it's not about pixels but more about animations. I don't like animations of exploding rocks and enemies especially. They seem a little bit more stiff than those in original. Also the background seems more busy with more distinct shit leftovers and gore, which stands out too much.
Rest is pretty much awesome. I like the new design of some old monsters and design of completely new are cool as well. The new rooms design are superb.

Well, at the same time it might also be about the actual pixels. and how the new art style does not appear to be as cute as the old one. And even though this may seem like a strange complaint, the art style being cute gave the original isaacing of bindac a pretty fascinating feel.
I would also like to restate that I am just being skeptical for the sake of being skeptical here, I am fully open to the possibility that the new artstyle will kickass just as much.
This is just a guess but when the team didn't want to spoil something related to the water in the pits, I imagine you can unlock an item that lets issac swim. It's weird they couldn't talk about it though

If this is true, we're definitely getting floaties. Rubber ducky tube around his waist at least.

Also, I do like the artstyle, though I do prefer the oldstyle. I also dislike a lot of the new animations, but maybe that's a fault of the artstyle as well.
Does anyone else still regularly play the original game?
Does anyone else still regularly play the original game?
Not regularly, but it's fun to make a run once in a week.
Does anyone else still regularly play the original game?
At this point I'm waiting for rebirth.
Does anyone else still regularly play the original game?
Community remix has been a refreshing change of pace while waiting, although I do find some of the shoehorned references a bit tiresome I just ignore those for the most part.

I do but most of the time I get rekt by Satan or Isaac.

The Survival Mod plugin for Spidermod is also a nice change of pace

I've broken the plugin so many times that it's not even funny anymore; can only report bugs with so much detail without having access to the codebase myself :v:. Since Spider only updates it on weekends it leaves periods where I just don't even bother with it until the next week, and this weekend is a holiday so I don't expect him to be plugging hours into it, plus with PAX I'd expect he just wants to chill a bit.

I just wanted to say, your thinking process and the way you analyze things is awesome. Also your avatar kicks ass.
I was totally okay with the pixel-art thing until the Magic Mushroom came into play. Ugh.
Yeah that's what I was afraid off, very shitty upscaling. There's retro graphics, and then there's this. I assume champion enemies will look equally terrible. I can deal with that since the game looks pretty nice otherwise, but it's still rather disappointing. Something that kinda bothers me about those pixels graphics as well is the fact that rooms look smaller due to everything being bigger to make up for the low resolution. Coins are huge and poop really stands out against the background, even when destroyed. In the original game, it looked much more like a background element.
Surprisingly enough I like the new music. It definitely doesn't come close to Danny B's stuff but it's a refreshing change and it fits the environment really well.

Satan is somehow predictable in his attacks during all his three phases
Isaac instead could as well be described as BULLET HELL and if by the time you reach him you don't have any defensive or deflecting items or haven't stacked a lot of health you are pretty much done

Satan is pretty easy in my opinion.
Isaac on the other hand is pure luck with items. I've beaten him and [sp]???[/sp] (is that a spoiler anymore) a couple of times and every time it was super-easy because of my items. Otherwise it's just impossible for me, no such thing as good luck exists in that fight,
Satan´s brimstone shots are what usually gets me a lot.

Just when I say that I manage to get the most op combo I´ve ever held.

fuck sake, so much for that then. Maybe it'll be up on the 8th. Editing is supposed to be done so idk what the hold up is now.
So, I'm trying out this community remix thing, and I was wondering: is there any way to disable the new music? It's pretty bad compared to the original music.

Guess where it came from.

it seems like the angle that our viewpoint is from has shifted a few degrees downward on enemies and isaac. i dont really like it all that much.

It adds a lot more depth to the rooms. The angle shift is especially noticeable and effective with holes (both pits and water-filled canals).

It makes the faces ugly, though.
I really want a mode in Rebirth where "permanent" bosses (like Mom, It Lives, Isaac) are taken out and added to the normal spawn pool. So it's possible to, say, fight Loki in place of Mom on Depths II.
I know it wouldn't work for the later stages, but that's assuming Cathedral and Hell work just as they do in the base game.
The whole point of there being those bosses there is so the game has a natural progression in boss difficulty while also bringing those milestones to a climactic end.
Basement/Cellar tier bosses are roughly the same difficulty as one another, ones found on Basement/Cellar 2 simply have more health.
Same goes for Caves/Catacombs.
Then Depths/Necropolis for one floor
Mom
Womb/Utero for one floor
Mom's Heart becomes It Lives! to ramp the difficulty up as the player gets more apt with the game. At this point bosses are now far more likely to spawn as their champion variants in order to make the game more difficult in general.
Satan/Isaac
???
It'd be kind of a weak ending if you blaze your way all the way through Utero XL to have a grand finale against Scolex. Other than some of the blatantly-imbalanced bosses like Bloat and Mask of Infamy, I can't really think of any of the bosses that are legitimately harder than their respective milestone bosses. Plus there being milestone bosses gives the player something to strive for as far as a loadout goes. No one really cares about optimizing their loadout to kill Duke of Flies, it's just a general thing to do: get damage and don't die. Whereas optimizing for a fight that you know is going to be tough is more rewarding to strive for.
Like it could work, but only really under the pretense that the regular bosses are now suitable challenges to rival these milestone bosses, and I just don't see that happening. In the boss's current state it'd just make for some anticlimactic endings.
I hope they change Mask of Infamy a little if he returns.
That piece of shit was annoying as hell.
