Quake 4 is really 7 years old? Wow, that's actually pretty surprising.
Jeeze, really? I got it the day the Xbox 360 came out, and that was like my only game for it for several months. I can't believe it's really that old.
Quake was my first game.
As I kid I remember I hated those fucking dog things in Quake 2, they scared the crap out of me every single time I saw one. It didn't help there was that moment in the first few levels where it jumps out of a wall by making it fucking EXPLODE. Scratch the first bit, I still hate those things.

I'm assuming the railgun is best for a quick kill, but damn they're a pain.
Finally a Quake megathread. Can anyone recommend me a best Q2 port? So far I stopped on KMQuake2 - not much stuff, but it's solid and working like a clock.
In Q2 the dogs used to scare me (now they just annoy the fuck out of me), in Q1 it was the fiends, and oh god the spawn enemies. Those blue goo fuckers hop around everywhere and fucking EXPLODE IN YOUR FACE when they die. I remember last time I went back and played Quake 2 I just started laughing because I came across the technician, and he looks exactly like an orange version of my old blender.
Can anyone recommend me a best Q2 port?
The unofficial 3.23 patch, also from the creator of KMQuake II: http://www.bfeared.com/library/quake/archive/quakedev/kmquake2/downloads/quake2-3.23-win32.zip It's pure vanilla Quake 2 with widescreen support, a few extra graphical options, and fixes to the renderer to work on modern cards. No dumb particle effects or ugly revamped hud/menu.
Finally a quake thread. Thanks, OP.
We should like, get a bunch of people and do a Coop run (with a coop mod for harder difficulty). Quake Coop is so much fun, and I love doing it on (good) custom maps as well.
I used to play an old mod for Q2 called Vortex. It was pretty awesome for co-op, you'd kill waves of monsters and gain levels to boost stats and upgrade weapons. I think it may be dead though, last time I tried to play it the only server running it was down

I love the soundtrack, it used to scare me as a kid so I would turn it off, but now I can't play Quake without it (it's still scary, but in an atmospheric and cool way): The music in Quake almost makes me feel like they were trying to make a scary game in the same way they attempted to with Doom 3. Also the sounds at the end kind of freak me out, sounds like someone eating flesh.
I'm pretty sure they were trying to make a horror-action game. I think they got pretty close with Quake.
The Quake 2 soundtrack was just badass incarnate.
I wonder if theres source code for the whole engine.
I wonder if theres source code for the whole engine.
Which engine? Because all the IDTech engines are open source now.
The Quake 2 soundtrack was just badass incarnate.
The Q2 soundtrack always reminded me of the Descent 2 soundtrack:
Which engine? Because all the IDTech engines are open source now.
Main issue is that many aren't on ID Software's site anymore. None. Either dead or broken. I mean the Quake 1/2 and Id Tech 4.
Anyone here remember the Quake 2 toys? I had the left two, and also had that Duke Nukem toy.
I can't seem to get anything regarding Team Fortress to work, although I'm certain it's just a lack of maps.
Main issue is that many aren't on ID Software's site anymore. None. Either dead or broken. I mean the Quake 1/2 and Id Tech 4.
These? https://github.com/id-Software/Quake https://github.com/id-Software/Quake-2 https://github.com/id-Software/Quake-III-Arena Although it would be better to look at other people's forks of the projects, as they'd often be cleaned up and actually compatible with modern compilers.
Fucking love Quake, first online game I ever played.
I remember back when I was 8 or 9 and yelling through the whole house for nobody to pick up the phone because I was playing Quake. Good times. I still even remember the I.P address (203.76.2.252) not sure what it is now though.
I remember when I was 8 or 9 if I was away from the computer for too long my family members would shut it down, so I used to press "T" to say, and type in extremely long messages detailing not to shut down the computer because I'm going to the bathroom and won't be that long. Also Zang-Pog, I agree. I love Q2 of course, but Q1's enemies, atmosphere, setting, and weapons just interest me more. Also I think the variety in the game keeps it overall more interesting to play through than Q2.
Anyone here remember the Quake 2 toys? I wish they finished the Quake 1 toys they were making. It would have been awesome to have them
Anyone up for quake live?
Quake II is fucking beautiful oh god this game.
I hate GL Quake 2. id Software had a colored lighting circlejerk and every light in the game was yellow. Software Quake 2 without colored lighting looks a lot better to me. As far as singleplayer goes Quake 1 is vastly better, Quake 2 is dominated by hitscan and has very slow enemies. You win by corner humping. I'm not sure about the multiplayer because Q2 MP is really dead. Also, I'm not a fan of the Quake Live F2P model. Free players get a tiny map pool and the community gets segregated.
I didn't like GLQ2 either simply because the textures in Q2 were bad enough that the filtering GLQuake applied made it look muddy, same with GLQuake 1.
big sexy images
Damn, that looks amazing. Wouldnt even guess is Q1..
Have some darkplaces screenshots with a ton of mods: lodsofimages
What mods?
I've used darkplaces without hi-res textures, but now I want to just to see how it feels.
I find Quake is one of the few older games that have HD texture packs and models that are fairly faithful to the original. Combine the HD textures with Darkplaces, enabled glossmaps and Parallax Offset mapping, and it looks gorgeous. Quake Reforged help: http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-mod-releases/finished-works/6289-definitive-reforged-darkplaces-instructions.html Just a note, if you don't feel like downloading all the various high-poly monsters, Quake Reforged is a skin pack that reskins all the monsters with HD textures, though the new models are much more classic looking for the most part. I highly suggest if you have a powerful rig, you get reflecting overload. It needs both the QRP and SMC, but it is sexy as fuck: Here's an example of some of the powerup "effects" from SMC
