They put up zombie survival servers for quake live and it is actually fun Winning as a survivor is impossible though
I disdain quake live for the simple fact that I can't stand the transformation of Gore into sparks
Can't you mod the files to change that?
DirectQ for an enhanced engine-limit really classic looking Direct3D renderer and music support, DarkPlaces for fancy visuals and model+texture packs and particle effects, ProQuake for a straight-up vanilla experience with good netplay support, and Fitzquake for engine limit enhancements, in OpenGL
Uhm Direct3D isn't in Linux, do not suggest WINE when he can use an OpenGL engine. Darkplaces is probably the best one for linux. Otherwise you can look at http://quakeone.com/ 's list of engines.
I'm rank #1 in the UK for CA and rank #24 in the world. http://www.qlranks.com/ca/country/gb http://www.qlranks.com/ca/ [sp]IDK how popular the site is, but I think the only reason I have that rank is that I stopped playing just as it started recording game data, therefore the one game I did awesome in that it recorded, I obtained 2074 ELO[/sp]

Any recommendations for a Quake map editor and some tutorials? I want to start mapping for Quake but I don't know where to start, especially since I'm used to designing Doom levels which is pretty much retard-friendly.
There's quite a bit of them. WorldCraft, QuArK, GTKRadiant, and with some changes, Hammer. My personal favorite is QuArK, and it has a lot of useful documentation: http://quark.sourceforge.net/ http://quark.sourceforge.net/infobase/ http://quark.sourceforge.net/infobase/maped.tutorial.html
Someone mentioned mods.
That teleport humming sound is strangely fitting
Goddamn I can't even play Quake Live because of the servers. When the server is occupied, it's always too far away from my location. When the server is near me, it's always empty. I can only play with bots. :'(
i'm starting to get back into quake live. sad that i don't have the extra cash to pay for premium/pro for pql. [editline]2nd November 2012[/editline] add me: BeardyD
Figured I'd post this here since Hexen 2 is a Quake engine game and not ID tech 1. http://www.mediafire.com/?rq72ba07dmsrk1s I have a really big desire to play Siege for Hexenworld, but the only H2 servers I can ever find are DM. Has anyone played it and if so, what's it like?
I'm partial to RuneQuake and FvF myself.
Figured I'd bump this to post this: In the shadows 1.1 has been released, it's a Quake mod with stealth gameplay elements Info from the thread http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-mod-releases/works-progress/8747-shadows.html Download http://www.simonoc.com/files/maps/sp/its_demo_v1_1.zip
Does anyone know any Quake II servers? I can't seem to connect to any.
YES. I know this thread is extremely old but there's no point making a new thread to add little to no additional content, plus we're in the middle of QuakeCon so what better time to bump the thread. Anyways, it clicked on me today (and I have no clue why it only happened now) that the Quake series is on Steam. Having never used Quake on Steam I don't know if my older CD based version or ports will connect to modern servers. Is there still a level of backwards compatibility or am I now forced to run individual servers for non-steam and steam version of the games?
The original Quake will always be my favourite of them all because of the epic as fuck dark twisted imagery and NIN's powerful soundtrack (bunny hopping through the whole game with the nailgun never gets old either), Quake 2 I found to be too easy and the sci-fi setting bores me after a while, at least the soundtrack is awesome though.

Am I bad if I use DarkPlaces with low-level lighting and high res level texture mods?
the steam version of quake sucks, no music or anything. just get fitzquake or something
Is there a better version on GoG?
If he has a CD Quake can still read it for music, I also have a CD version of quake and surprisingly it works fine. You'll have to use WinQuake or some other source port to for it to work though.

Didn't realize there was a Quake thread, fits in here more than in the doom thread.
