I'd figure the fact that they're making expansions means they aren't exactly dying. Somehow.
If they just barely broke even with the base game, the expansions could be an attempt to try and make some more money. Alternatively, if the company still has enough money, they can be trying to make expansions to pay off the initial investment.
Making expansions doesn't necessarily mean it's running on a profit.

We don't know and they won't say. But apparently Eternal Lords was Steam's Number 2 Top Seller on release, with GTA V and MKX coming out the same day it can't have been doing too bad for itself.
Necromancer race units look so goddamn bad, its just like they slapped concrete cracks on top of the units skins.
Necromancer special units however look good. I wished that they would have seen little more effort on ghoul units, have them little decayed, wounded, bone showing or something.
Something that shows he is undead, concrete cracks going through face, clothes and shields looks like he is statue.

They're a ten man studio, if that, and honestly, the Shader way is the only feasible way for them to have EVERY unit, past, present, future be able to become undead.
And I honestly really don't mind it. It looks fine on most units, and great on some.
I just want mod support.

They've said before that they will look into the feasibility of mod support, but the implication was that it would happen after the development of expansions.
So it could happen soon-ish, or it could be a while, depending on how well EL is done and if they decide to do another expansion.
