I've always found it hard to change my voice for characters in PnP sessions, but the few times I have used something like Fantasy Grounds, I've altered my voice to fit my characters constantly.
Hell, I had elevated voice "discussions" over Fantasy Grounds and teamspeak. I haven't had the balls to actually do so in a face to face session.
Shit was great.
I do lots of silly voices when I'm DMing (at least IRL, because doing it any other way is completely ridiculous) but for characters and over the internet I just don't think it's that big of a deal
esp. over the internet when at least if you type it down then some people with terrible internet like myself can see it on the off chance they drop out for a few seconds and miss something in the moment
Yeah in-person writing is reserved for actual in-character writing or for note passing when it comes to my group. (We use so many post-it notes, it's criminal)
You make that sound like a bad thing.
it is when the backstory is fucking retarded
i could write a book about my sick changeling character who totally isn't trying to be alex mercer but that doesn't mean it should ever be read by human eyes
[editline]24th September 2013[/editline]
also on the topic of voice chat, i think it's great for dialogue but the gm should totally type out big shit like setting and whatnot, even if it's just to supplement what he said over voice. it's nice to have something to read back on.
voice chat is fun but sometimes you make characters that are really hard to voice! I'm still working on perfecting an over the top Moroccan accent for AdEva
I wouldn't imagine why anyone would forgo using their voice if they were physically present -- using vocalization and body movement is supposed to be part of the whole PnP experience. There's a spark that you get from real encounters with people that you lose online. Seems to be a waste if you didn't take advantage.
Whenever I see this discussion, I can't help but picture a bunch of guys at a table passing around notes with what their characters want to say or do written down.
I have always wanted to see a group of professional mimes play PnP, including the GM. Maybe with a really good narrator to add to the comedy.

I can appreciate that a shitty backstory is a painful slog, but the problem is not in the manner they presented the material. The fault is solely on the person being a shitty writer, both in their literary skills and conceptualization process. I just wouldn't read it if it was that awful. Plenty of shit out there to read, I see no need to subject myself to it in relation to my hobby.
Also you don't necessarily need a regional accent to have a distinctive character 'voice'. There's plenty of verbal tics and habits one can attach easily to a persona, and they're generally easier to maintain as well.

Nobody said anything about using text in person. It's just that using voice without physical presence, AKA on Skype or whatever can turn into a horrible mess if everybody wants to talk.
We currently have a good thing going on in our sessions. Whenever I run AdEva it's always voice chat in tandem with in character stuff and some narration written in text. Doesn't really work unless you can type reliably quickly or touch type but we get it done.
/me is also a good thing

Space Australia is pretty nice, Space Brisbane especially. Just have to make sure space dingos don't get your space baby.

Spoilers: It's full of nerds.
There was a girl from it running the stall at the little clubs faire thing the uni put on, so it can't be that bad
unless they're hiring pretty people to advertise for themselves now

Figured that out the painful way at my uni's RP club

No.
That said, if you want to roleplay with "cool" kids, and don't mind doing tedius boring number statistics with no real payoff, join a fantasy football league.

the difference between dnd and fantasy football is that one is about a bunch of assholes going around and doing shit pertaining to numbers and stats, and the other is DnD
Welp.
Got together for a new sessions with some friends after a few months break.
Buddy (surprisingly) gets his character approved, no problems, his name was Illuminaire. Lumen to friends.
His character (a cleric) was introduced as the rest of the standard party was travelling, he was looking out at the horizon from the side of a cliff-like structure. Hill. Whatever.
He welcomed us, asked where we were going, and after the obligatory welcoming in to the party and promises of eternal gratitude to help him in his clerical quest, he said "The sun is like a brilliant parent." I should have caught on here, but it was not until he removed his cloak, and the DM quickly described that he had a hand painted sun symbol on his chainmail, that I realized what was happening. But it was too late.
He turned to the sun, lifted his arms, and said "Praise the sun! May Pelor, god of sunlight, light our path!"
[sp]We now have Solaire's twin brother as a party member.[/sp]

Also, I'm considering just running a Shadowrun game, taking the gay elf magic out of the system is too hard to balance.

Real nerds are a lot worse then nerds that you have only met through the internet. The DnD club at my school is filled with tons of weirdos and shit but I assume everyone on facepunch is a special kind of weirdo, where they are cool on the outside and total fucking weirdos on the inside.

I'm aware I'm weird and try and keep it in check :v: Mostly just unusual eccentricities though, I don't really have any weirder habits than brushing my teeth in the shower.
i'll play if i can be a pixie commando
Playing characters of a different gender than your own as long as they're not your waifu/husbando or you're making them out to be sexualised for your own enjoyment.

What's the fucking point of combining fantasy and cyberpunk if you can't even play as a pixie commando.
Shadowrun: Worst fucking game ever.

I've seen guys managing to pull some restraints. Basically the easiest way to do so is think you're playing a guy the entire time. Of course, I don't see a problem with doing such things for my own enjoyments as long as they're shown in tasteful or fitting ways, but the ridiculous sexual details can work both ways in roleplaying. Though guys probably do them more while playing as female characters.

Pixie commandos are the least of my concerns, dude.
They TOOK OUT CAR MODS FROM CORE BOOK
Like, the whole fact that you got to pimp your car out from a generic piece of traffic vehicles into this goofy-ass beefed up straight-out-of-James-Bond-but-unfortunately-a-BMW was one of the best parts about Shadowrun's customization. Sure, it was a huge money sink, but I'd say it was so worth flaunting it as long as you used the car.

It really depends on emphasis, if you're describing your character as sexy as hell and also good with a gun, that's bad. If you're describing them as a deadeye who also happens to turn some heads, that's good. The fact that you want them to give people boners should not be anywhere the main characteristic of the character and I see far too many people fuck this up and be a complete creep.

Yeah, I miss my 300km/h, 0 to 60 in under two seconds, cyberware and weapons scanning, self-driving, all seeing, unflip-over-able, anti-air off road super-bike with a satellite internet connection from 4th edition.

So... All my characters then.
In the last DnD campaign I was in I played as a Dwarven gunslinger and spoke in a faux Scottish accent for all my IC dialogue. I feel like it added a lot to the experience and the rage-induced decisions made in the passion of dwarven-hood actually helped us solve a murder mystery.
