So making exalted characters is pretty rad
Made a character whose whole concept came about as a result of my learning of the Sidereal charm to turn anything into bow ammunition and basically went from there
End result, archer who makes sheets of paper into origami, then fires them as roboteching ammunition every bit as lethal as normal arrows
And if I really really wanted to, I could dump most of my free points into making it so I could then transform said pieces of origami into basically all sorts of crazy things while they're in flight, like glass, or love, or boulders and so on
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
I fucking love exalted.

I dunno, my initial idea was throwing weapons but since those have their own skill and the whole description says 'an arrow of any type' I sort of assumed it was bow-like weapon exclusive
Also since it's in the archery tree
I've been learning how to DM more effectively. My group of friends is really just starting out in DnD, and our old DM and good friend left to the military so we have to fill the gap. All still level 1-3 characters, heh. I want to eventually do some very epic quests though.

One thing I've learned is not to worry too much about how other people GM. I've learned that my style as a GM is actually quite different to others; I tend to think up of neat scenes, events and NPCs and when it's game time I tend to just improvise the gaps.
Sssh, don't tell my players, though. I tell them it's all planned since Day 1.

In the D&D campaign I GMed, I initially had no real overarching plot intended, because the initial story was just some little conspiracy in a small town, and then we'd just work out from there
Then, of course, one of my players rolled a 20 where he shouldn't have, and ended up releasing a universe-destroying cosmic weapon
Cue, overarching plot formed, and I didn't even have to do anything
Also, to be completely honest, I think reading Darths & Droids made me a better GM. It's got lots of good tips in there for stuff in general. Plus it's just a funny comic.

Just make sure you know the rules.
You'll come up with your own style afterwards.
Mine is making the players do literally everything while I sit on my ass. Fun.

From what I can tell from our test game last saturday, Ciaster's GM style seems to be "nerf." He's taking a page from my book, it seems.
I'm so proud.
Whee, Numenéra books arrived.
I should open the package at some point...
so the first meeting of my uni's gaming club was today
surprisingly enough, at least the people in the game I've got in seem okay
though this may be due to me already knowing 4 of the other players
I tend to set up some stuff the day before/of the session, then let my players do whatever they want on the roads between.
Case and point: Last week I expected them to go straight to the capital of another county after they got a quest from the Duke telling them to do so. They took a detour to the hometown of 2 of the PCs and had dinner with their parents, and the session ended with an encounter I'd planned to have happen half-way through the session.
I may or have may not been talked into GMing this fan-made Naruto game, despite pretty much loathing Naruto.
anyone up for silly ninjer antics? it will probably contain explosions

As much as I'd love to, I'm gonna be busy for the next four weeks.
3.5 in the Three Kingdoms playtest as of Saturday. Four weeks of practical testing, then we should be able to put it online. At least, that's the plan.
Best of luck to you, but don't let them use the [sp]naked-lady-covered-in-mist[/sp] thingmabob. That one's more annoying than useful.

you're a bad influence Dan
also so far my gming style's been closer to "oh god i have no idea what i'm doing"
can't wait for the next session
So, I think I have joined my college's DnD group thing that they had going on, and they want me to be a Cleric. Since this is my first time ever being a class outside of "Fighter", what kind of fun things can I do as Cleric? Also, since I don't have a cleric pre-made, and they aren't just giving me a premade character, what should I do to make my Cleric a bit more interesting?
[editline]2nd October 2013[/editline]
Also, I should note that this is only my second time ever playing DnD, with my first time being a Halloween themed one-off where everyone had a character that was a reference to something, so I don't really know a whole lot of the mechanics too well.

I assume this is either 3rd ed or Pathfinder. Clerics are pretty damned awesome and you can build them a couple ways... either as a buffbot that can fight, another nuke, or frontline fighter/healer... and all kinds of other ways too! You have to consider what god you will worship too, since as a cleric that's an essential and integral part of their character.
Well, I should note that they have already promoted me to "leader" of the party, granting me a 2 use healing spell per encounter as an inherit trait. I'd like to be in on the action, as I've never been one to sit idle and in the back, so I'd probably like a build that has me near or on the front lines.
But yeah, if any of you guys have any nifty ideas for character backstory/race/whatever, I'm up for it. I'd love to play something that's a bit different from the norm. I do believe that we are the good guys though, so keep that in mind if you have any suggestions. [sp]Also, sadly the group that I'm with is using 4th Edition. While I don't know the specific reasons as for why it's disliked, I've come to the understanding that 3.5 is considered the superior version, so hopefully my experience is a fulfilling one.[/sp]

I better not be denied all of my possible moments of Entropic coolness by your GM fiats of "lel u left ur sax in d kar do sumthin elze" because then I'll have to resort to nothing but headshots.
Also, would you object to me modifying my sheet? I want to see if there's any way I can make a few adjustments to increase my REF to increase my chances of pulling some totally sicknasty headshots, but since we already played a game (even if it was just a test) I want to know if you're against me changing my sheet.
But don't worry, I won't be asking to change my sheet every game. Come next session all changes will be final.

Basically, while 4th has actual combat balance, 3.5 has a penchant for going completely off the rails once casting classes hit mid-high levels, simply because of the sheer power and versatility of a lot of spells. 4th is also kind of lacking in out-of-combat stuff from my understanding, which is kind of a bummer if you were hoping for an intrigue-based game or the like
But for straight dungeon crawling where you don't want anyone left out it's hardly a bad system
What's the best way for martial characters to close the gap with spellcasters in Pathfinder from the point of view of the player?
What's the best way for martial characters to close the gap with spellcasters in Pathfinder from the point of view of the player?
Charge.
Charge.
Charge, or backstabs. Really, get them before they get a spell off. Of course, high level play has contingency spells for just such an occasion... then hope you get through that shit. Always ALWAYS beat down casters first, they will always fuck you up more than a big dude with a sword. He's getting maybe 2-3 attacks per round at level 7... wizards get room clearing spells at that level. Make sure they don't get to use them.
Another way martial characters can even the odds is with the use of potions and other magic items. A good potion of invisibility could mean the difference between a lightning bolt to the face and a dead wizard. Things like that. I'm sure there's a shitload of abilities that various classes get in pathfinder too, but I haven't gone through the sourcebook, I'm just saying general tactics that have always worked in D&D to fuck over casters.
Charge and hope you're more than cinders by the time you're in melee range.
I'll need to get use to doing that. I'm still learning the tricks and ropes with my rogue and being in melee combat, being that I've never done it before in Pathfinder. From what I'm seeing my summoner may be melee centric as well.
Also, time to make the Rocketeer possible in some rpg one way or the other. It shall happen together with my lame Power Ranger dream.

Climb things. Use ranged weaponry, since combat advantage might disappear before you get into melee position. Take advantage of your ridiculous sneak attacks. You get it whenever you have combat advantage, whether it be flanking or whatever.
Abuse the system as much as you can.
and don't forget to czech for trazp!1

Stealth, mobility, and those fighter feats that forces everyone near you to make fairly hard concentration checks.
