You mean I can finally play a cleric that's the tankiest damage dealer of the party with decent spellcasting ability? Awesome!
Uhh, less armour/weapon bonuses than fighters, d8 hit die, not full BAB, and the spells are good for something that's not a full caster but still not as good as any full caster class. It's nice, but not as good as you seem to think :v:

I take it back, there is no god.
It's basically to fighters and clerics what bards are to rogues and sorcerers.
It's basically 3.5 clerics but with less spellcasting ability.
I was being sarcastic because clerics are one of the better classes for combat to begin with.
Arcanist seems a wee bit overpowered, what with litterally taking all the good parts of a sorcerer and combining it with all the good of a wizard.
Arcanists in AD&D were a weird amalgam of Mages, Bards, and Clerics, in addition to being specialist Necromancers and Diviners. A weird class indeed.

in 3E at least. 3.0 they were BETTER than mages in almost every way.

Yes
Clerics are bullshit.
Honestly, at this point, they just leave clerics in for good purpose, it's their way of saying "Listen, if you want to powergame this, just play a cleric, otherwise, we have all these great classes for you to try and roleplay."

Clerics in fluff serve a common character archetype, just that they do all of the things gooder than all the other people, so I hear.
How exactly are clerics overpowered? Is that some higher-level thing, or are they supposed to rock from first to twentieth levels? In the games I'm in, the cleric is one of the weakest PCs.

THen they aren't playing them right. Clerics in 3E have combat spells like mages AND really good defensive and buffing spells. They can ALSO wear armor like a fighter and use almost any weapon that a fighter could, letting them EVEN AT LOW LEVEL outmatch any other class. They are a one man party basically.
I've never gotten high enough to see clerics as OP. I've always thought they were under-powered.
arent clerics just supposed to be healers
like
whats all this with fighter armor and combat spells
maybe ive been playing the wrong games

Shh shh shh.
Don't call Clerics healers, they hate it when you call them that.
Clerics aren't healers? What world have I been living in?
Well healing is boring, so all the clerics that consider themselves 'good' at the game always talk about how they aren't healbots and use buffs and whatever
Clerics aren't healers? What world have I been living in?
The majority of people I've met that make Clerics abhor the label of "healer" since it implies their function is to heal people (which is seen as an inglorious action.) The common thing is for clerics to focus on domains and metamagic so they can buff themselves up to superhuman levels of ability.

seems like it ruins the point of being a cleric in the first place
Clerics aren't healers, they're support, healing is but one aspect of supporting a party.
Clerics aren't healers, they're support, healing is but one aspect of supporting a party.
yea, but with all the buffs and capabilities they have, they seem more like op powermancers than supporters
No one healed as good as the Healer class did. If people wanted a healbot they should get one of them, otherwise the Cleric is wasted. Their buffs and combat abilities are to keep people from needing to be healed in the first place.
I'm kind in a bad place, i've been trying to get a DM for a group of newbies who want to start playing, but i haven't been able to get in contact with someone willing/able to learn.
Basically, is there anyone willing to be a DM for me and a few buds? sorry if this is a pesky post.

It'd help if you specified which system you're interested in, unless you don't really mind.
I would offer to but I'm in enough games as it is.

Its chill, someone already messaged me offering to dm, which was rad of him.
Also on the topic of Mekton again. ANyone have a .txt file thats pre made so to say so our GM doesn't have to make one from scratch.

Not really, like, at all.
They're powerful because that on top of being the best healer and among the best buffers in the game, they are also competent at fighting and can hold their own.
Other classes still do their respective things a lot better than clerics do.
I know they're not the same editions, but as a level 10 cleric in a current PF game. I can say I don't really focus on healing all that much, but I'm more of a tertiary tank too since we have a very good fighter and paladin. It's mostly buffs for my team. My logic is, the faster the enemies are dead, the less I have to do healing stuff. Oh yeah and I summon monsters a lot, because the less attention on my party, the better.
Plus you can be the healer as a rogue/bard, buy a wand.

Well, when we go into the realms of magical items, anyone can be a healer, really.
Problem is most low level PCs generally won't have the dosh for decent magic items, and even if they did they would still have to find someone who's selling them, which depending on the GM can be fairly rare.
