What's a good way to hook players into a quest? I've got a good quest, but the players are all CN who don't seem to chase after plot threads, and I don't want to bribe them with "defeat this bad guy for us and we'll give you cash" again.
Context: They're heading into a city that's basically Venice if it had been built in northern Russia, so there's icebergs as well as ships in the waterways. The quest is going to be a spoof of Die Hard, but I can't think of a logical reason for them to just suddenly be in the top of a tower so the quest can start the most logical way.

Usually the quickest way is to steal something valuable from them.
Doesn't it just come to the same thing since you'd make the DC higher than it's possible to roll? Unless you allow absolutely anything to happen on a crit
Meaning players can roll for anything but are essentially wasting everyone's time :v:
I like to let silly things happen on crits
Hell, my whole D&D game would have been completely different if I hadn't let the barbarian fiddle with the prison of an elder god (and roll a 20 on his use magice device roll and unlock it)
They may be hard to account for but they definitely make the game more interesting
My favorite GM advice: Yes or roll.
Players trying to attack the darkness? Make them roll.
Shooting God? Roll for it.
Trying to time travel by closing your eyes and thinking really hard? Roll.
Never say no.
The problem is if you play Exalted, where doing absolutely ridiculous shit is somewhat expected.
And jumping across a 50ft chasm is totally possible with charms. Hell, you can literally jump off of ANYTHING as long as it's as wide and strong as a human hair.

Functionally yes. RP-wise, it's hilarious.
I do something slightly different. "Trying to leap across a 50ft chasm... uh... okay roll for it...
Wow, natural 20... okay, I wasn't expecting that...
Hrm... well, with a great giant leap, you soar across the chasm, almost as if you sprout wings, angelic music plays around you as a divine light shines from within you.
Then as you near the ground, you wake up from your fantasyland and realize that you're an idiot."
Exactly what I mean.

Yeah, it depends on the game. In Only War a lot of the time I'll just tell my players "no", because it's basically the opposite of Exalted. Right now I have the regiment commander with them, so whenever the players do something stupid I can just go "What do you think you're doing troop?".

Usually offers of wealth and gear is enough.

My favourite is, if you're doing a low power thing. "Do this and you'll survive."
If you're doing a high-power thing. "Do this and you'll be known as a hero in this place. Or some variation".
Wealth can be spent too easily, and the only reason you get money is so you can do better in quests... to get more money.
Power is different, and obviously survival beats all.

Ooh, that gave me a good idea:
I'll have the totally-not-Alan-Rickman guy try to recruit them as mooks in his plan. With most players there would be some "crap, I'm on the bad guy's side" moral dilemma, but these guys are more likely to try to stab him in the back to steal the shit for themselves. So their antagonist will probably end up as totally-not-Bruce-Willis.

Another option is to just threaten them or something they value.
EG in Exalted, one of the players started with a 3-dot manse. Session #2 the group finds out that someone is going to try and fuck with it.
We'll see how they handle it in session #3, but at this point regardless of what they do setting up this singular 'quest' has given me several plot threads, partly because of the characters' actions on the way to defend the manse.
It's always fun when a player's actions can influence the entire story, or even just dredge up some cool plotlines.
Like, for example, a magical teenage catgirl crashing into a classroom 2 days in a row thanks to some hilariously shit rolls prompting the school's paranormal investigations club (ie a bunch of nerds who believe in ghosts and aliens) to start making wild (and possibly in some cases correct) accusations :v:
Jesus Christ.
In a session the other day, the party were in the crypts of a Deity currently being used by a Lich.
They got to the end and found a woman strapped to a pole, naked and battered/bruised.
The first thing the Jester says is
Can I go and Appraise her?
The Jester has a thing for slavery for some reason.

Speaking of which if anyone in here wants to commission some character art I will do that on the cheap. I need the practice
[editline]11th December 2013[/editline]
Just realised that offer is probably pointless without any examples of work, so here's a few random pieces

I'll forward someone to you though, I know he wants his drawn.

I want to make a Heavy Armor Rogue/Fighter some day because of this image. I mean, it could just be a fighter dual weapon, but it just seems rogue-y too me. Probably turn out terrible, but interesting
And also, I drew a snakefolk I'm going to play as in an upcoming campaign.

Today on the prelude session of Traveller w/ Trooper:
Started with all of us in Marty's Malt Shop, drinking milkshakes and eating sundaes. Then a guy came in and nervously dropped a briefcase under the table, and quickly left. A few minutes later, a huge group of Triad guys showed up and told us to leave because they were expecting a delivery to the stall we were in. We joked around for a bit, then left. As we did, one of them noticed the briefcase we were carrying, and a chase ensued. During it, we found the guy who gave us the case and dragged him along, then ducked in to an alley as the local police force showed up. We opened the case and there was a huge ass diamond inside. We took it to a black market dealer and he identified it as the Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond, then told us who it was supposed to belong to, and someone we could probably sell it to for a high price. We started heading towards this new dude's place, only for the Triad and the cops to show up again, then a sniper started shooting at the fight, then an angry baker's pie got fucked with and he turned in to the Incredible Hulk, and we ran off again. The sniper chased us on a motorcycle until Hats punched him with his rocket fist and he fell off his bike, then we ducked in to an alley where he jumped out of a window at us after pushing 2 cops out of the same window. The group, sans me, surrounded him, and he backed off. We left the alley and kept heading toward the new buyer's house, when ANOTHER meet between the Triad and the cops occured, as well as the sniper showing up again, as well as the original owner of the diamond and the guy we were going to sell it too walking up next to the sniper.

Eventually we decided to just drop the briefcase in the center and leave. We headed toward the sniper and the other dude, then, as we passed them we heard music.
Enter Bluestorm, our rival bounty hunter. She flew in and knocked out/killed every Triad or PSF officer there, then grabbed the briefcase and flew out, kicking Rear in the face as she did so. We all sat down for a few minutes, defeated, before returning to Marty's.
Way to forget us learning a valuable lesson about sticking our noses in things, Rats :v:

The valuable lesson is really "Fuck Bluestorm, she's a bitch."

Thank you
I don't quite trust myself not to fuck up character concepts, but I wouldn't charge anything if I ended up not liking what I produced.
I actually sketched up a character for Discoinferno for fun but I was totally unsatisfied with the result

How much do you charge for commissions? I've wanted to get a drawing of my L5R character commissioned for a long time.
I'm pretty flexible with people from FP, if you liked it you could probably just give me what you think it's worth. I can't imagine asking for much more than $50, and that'd be for a pretty laboured piece of art. As I said if I'm not satisfied with what I do myself then you can have it for nothing and I'll chalk it up to practice.

How long will you be taking commissions for? I'm broke as fuck right now but in the future when I have some dosh I'd definitely be interested.

You never know when groceries will become obsolete.
Sorry to ask again, but are there any good starter sets, pdfs, etc. for 3.5e (I'm only assuming to get this one because you folks seem to think it's the best).
I mean, I found this:
