So gentlemen, brought to you fresh from a nine hour Pathfinder session, I bring you the story the Hindsight sorcerer and the glorious, but ultimately completely stupid death, of Aggi Pilekvist, the elven druid.
So, my group and I have been trying to get a ship to sail us to Geb, the land of the undead in the Golarion world setting. To achieve this, we had to get to a specific sea side city, where a man could help us. On the way there, we take a job as guards for a small caravan run by an insane Gnome, obviously. However, on the way we get attacked by a blue dragon which kills the gnome, and takes off with the caravan camels. A bit shaken up, we reach our destination only to find out we can't afford the services of the guy we were told could help us get to Geb, but that no one believes us about the blue dragon attack. Only a local druid takes a interest in investigating the possibility of dragons in the area, unlikely as it apperantly is on these parts of the world. He sends along his appretince, a gnome sorcerer and gives us each a potion of invisbility since our objective is simply to gather evidence pointing to the existence of a dragon in the area, not to actually kill it... which would have been impossible since we were all level 3 at the time.
Anyway, after alot of hijinks and sillines we reach a temple in the desert built into a lonely mountain. After some light exploration and killing, we reach the center of this abandoned tempel, which is a big open garden. The only way into the garden, is by taking a flight of stairs down and walk through to giant open doors, something which should have raised some concerns. True enough, after we all enter this isolated garden, the doors close, and some shit eating fucker walks out on the balcony with some wand. Turns out, he is somehow using this wand to control the dragon and he obviously sends it down to kill us. The group, not being suicidal, decides the best course of action would be to remain unseen, so we all decide to drink our invisbility potions. What follows, is a couple of rounds of us trying desperately to find some way out while sneaking around praying the dragon doesn't hear us. After a while, we all spot a crack in the wall big enough for us to pass through and we all head for it.
This is where things start to go horribly wrong for our friend, Aggi Pilekvist.
See, he is the first person to notice the exit, and as such, he is the first to reach the exit. However, right before he can make it through to safety, he fails his sneak roll, and is immediately "spotted" by the dragon who gets ready to spew hellfire, or rather electricity, in his general direction.
We, of course, all think that Aggi is boned beyond measure. He desperately started to scheme, and quickly came up with a plan to hopefully boost his reflex safe enough so that he could make it inside the crack. He would transform into a cat while running. And even then, he would still have to make an insane roll of 18 in order to make it.
This is where our gnome sorcere, forevermore known as the Hindsight Sorcerer, makes the most brilliantly observation, one that turned this doomed and rather sad ending to Aggi Pilekvist, into one of the most hilarious moments in my roleplaying years. Right before Aggi is about to make his last dice roll, Hindsight simply says "you could've turned into a bird from the start of this whole mess and flown away you know."
And for ten glorious seconds everybody goes quite in the room. As we all realize the weight of this revelation, we all turn to see how Aggi is reacting to this. He just sat there. Staring. His eyes, going wider and bigger, and his mouth opening more and more as he slowly realizes what a complete moron he had been. A quick frantic check confirmed Hindsights words; Aggi, could indeed, just have turned into a bird of some sort right after he had taken the invisibility potion and simply flown right out of there, the dragon having been none the wiser.
We all laughed for a solid five minutes after that. Well, everyone except Aggi. He rolled a 17 on his reflex check, one short of being able to live through his own terrible mistake. He was vaporized by electricity.
And yes, the rest of us made it to safety after that. We decided to taunt Aggi ingame by making our characters suggest he might have survived since he wasn't with us. After all, he was a druid, surely he could just turn into a bird and fly away right? Obvious.
No tl;dr cause I am writing this at 5:47 in the morning and that is also why this thing is full of spelling errors and whatnot. I apoligize.
So, I'm assuming this thread isn't just for general D&D stuff but for other RPG PnP games. So I picked up that PnP game Monster of the week, and I'm reading through the rule book and it look pretty fun, it's like CoC lite but you actively want to hunt the monsters. Basically it seems to play out like an episode of Buffy or Supernatural. I think it takes a lot of its rules from that older RPG Dungeon world (I think that's the name). It's seems pretty fun/goofy so I think I'll give it a bash with some friends.

Could it be run like an episode of Red Dwarf (season 3 onwards)?
Hm, probably, I mean I don't see why it couldn't be done like that. Although it is basically CoC lite. A session is generally split into an investigation part and then a fight with the douche that's causing the issues. I just finished reading the rule book and it is very light, compared to what most people would be used to if they play like PF, or 3.5 or pretty much any of the heavier RPGs. I like it however, it could be good to play when people don't turn up for sessions of other games, seems quite fast to start up and get going once you know what you're doing.

Call of Cthulhu seems really interesting. And deadly. But mostly interesting.
Someone cast revive on 2013 'cause that shit is at negative hit points right now
Happy new year to all y'all, from the Fallout nerds to Mutants and masterminds
Someone please play mutants and masterminds with me

Ask Elowin.

My most horror-like experience of tabletop was playing spooky scary skeletons while fighting undead in a cave. An actual horror campaign would be like a poorly made interactive creepypasta.

Who said anything about it being run poorly?
Call of Cthulhu seems really interesting. And deadly. But mostly interesting.
I'd say I'm doing halfway decent at making Magical Burst deadly and at least marginally horrorish. It's going to get kicked up a few notches once you plebs stop plebbing around on these pleb-tier adventures and realize how real shit actually is.
But that can wait until after the hilarious school shenanigans.
I imagine running a horror campaign would be more difficult over the internet. Doesn't mean impossible, though; from what I understand, Rear managed it in Eclipse Phase a while back.
And then I tried a few weeks later and just ended up making everyone mad because Pathfinder, where if you see a monster you're probably meant to kill it. (They weren't meant to kill it.)
I'd still be up for maybe trying to GM Call of Cthulhu at some point, if I ever find myself wanting to try GMing for 2 games at once.

That's why I want to play a horror game with a GM that actually knows how to do spooky shit. My Deadlands campaign is probably going to be try-hard horror most of the time so I need material to steal from.
Too bad a majority don't live near me. My friend Byron sure knows how to pull off horror.
We had a classic moment during one of our games where I ended up jumping across the table into his lap because a pull-down window shade in his house flew up suddenly during a scene where we were exploring an abandoned saloon.

Surely it'd be easier in text than if you were trying to do a spooky voice or something
Like if you're describing a horror scene you have to let the words do the work I think, if you start putting emphasis and stuff into your speech the scary just falls flat

But in real life people aren't usually listening to music in the background and browsing other tabs while the session is going.
Also, it's easier to create atmosphere when you can do shit like Alxnotorius mentioned and have music playing at a volume you choose.

If any of my players do this I hope they fall upon hard times and go to prison
How would one actually go about learning how to play this game or finding people to play with? I've always been curious about D&D.
