I run my current game through a Steam group chat. Maps sit in photoshop on my other monitor, and I use Gyazo to instantly upload the map to an image host as I update it.
Not 100% perfect honestly but I've been told that Roll20 and Maptools and so on are fiddly and annoying to learn, so I didn't want the extra hassle factor. I might run future campaigns differently though.
Our group does it about the same way. Steam group chat for the actual text, rolz.org for rolling dice, and we use a dropbox to keep all the character sheets, maps, rulebooks together. Works like a charm.
I trust my group well enough to roll physical dice.. couldn't deny them the pleasure anyway
My group uses steam for voice chat, which is what we do out of character stuff and boring in character stuff like "i walk into the room" for. We use Roll20 for rolling dice and in character stuff like dialogue, and we use Dropbox to collate all the character sheets and rulebooks and stuff.
I've used Maptools extensively before and while it is definitely far more feature rich than Roll20 it has close to zero accessibility and looks like a steaming pile of dicks

This is effectively how we play as well and it works just hunky dory for us.

Text for in char and mics for ooc is a pretty interesting idea

It can slow things down a little but it's a good compromise if you really aren't comfortable voice-acting in character stuff but are fine with joking, discussing mechanics and taking care of the less important stuff via mic.
As a GM what I tend to do is handle location descriptions and dialogue via text in Roll20 while calling for rolls, describing more incidental and less important details and declaring basic attacks via mic.

It's pretty much how I've always played, it works really well for me. It's a nice balance between pacing, with trivial stuff being just spoken and in depth stuff being typed, and it also keeps the kind of social aspect of tabletops because we can all chat laugh and shit at each other over voice.

I absolutely love it if voice is going to be involved in an online game. It keeps the in-character log coherent, and rules questions/clarifications/answers are often more elegantly handled with voice.
It also addresses my biggest pet peeve with voice communication in that if you leave your computer for any reason (beverage, bathroom, food, etc) you completely miss out on whatever was just talked about. And unlike in-person speech there's no easy physical cues and/or proximity hearing, so asking for recaps is even more fumbly than normal.
I really wish Roll20 would let you stream your data to other people. Their upload and storage limits really hamper any kind of use I could potentially get from their service. Shame, as I liked their dynamic lighting and wanted to use it.
Would there be any interest in starting a one-off group? I was just thinking about it and it would be a good way to try out systems or do gm-less games, like Fiasco or Microscope.
If we get enough people, we can basically just play it by ear, so you wouldn't have to show up every week.

if we're lucky we might manage to finish a tenth of our sheets during the session
Today, on AdEva: Prison!
Why not Racial Holy War?
It is a racial holy war.
Against angels.

Now you're getting the idea. But for real, if you're down, just like... tell me or something.
[editline]3rd January 2014[/editline]
Also, we should play racial holy war as the "bad guys".
Just finished another session of Naruto shittles
This time, our city was attacked by a shitton of assholes, so we decided to guard a warehouse from them.
Three of them attack us, so while my teammates distract them I prepare a huge fire spell.
Cast it on them, kill them all, and I set fire to a giant forest. Oops.
In other news I realized the near infinite potential of the crazily exploitable magic system in this game. Basically your magic spell has all kinds of effects you can add for points, but on top of that, you also add an infinite amount of "handsigns" to it, which makes the spell stronger at no point cost, but makes it take longer to cast.
So we whipped up a spell which you could cast in about 10-20 minutes as a Genin character, even faster for a higher ranked character as the amount of handsigns you can do per turn increases per rank. And this spell basically destroys everything within a radius of one kilometer.
Mind you, a Genin character is basically a 12 year old who has just exited the ninjer academy.
time to initiate the apocalypse
and yeah you can keep making it bigger, it'll just take slightly longer to cast
12 year old kids can destroy entire continents if they just spend a couple hours in this world.

Make a world ending spell and take the entire planet hostage.
Just get everyone to protect you as you cast for hours. :v:

No, if people knew about it they could EASILY find and destroy him. The only power in that sort of ability is sneak attacking, since higher rank ninjas can EASILY dominate hundreds of lesser ninja.
This is a pretty glaring issue though, and should get fixed asap.

So if you had enough time, you could vaporize the universe?

Still, it could make for the opening move of a war, if you can get a global scope. Single-shot annihilate 90% of the enemy's forces, plus civilians and materiel infrastructure. I assume high-level ninja would have magic (or plot) protection, but that could still be an effective move.
Seems more like a villain thing, though. And it does sound like a good quest - ancient evil villain has almost finished casting his thousand-year world domination spell, you have to make your way through his lair before he can finish casting.
this seems like it's not fitting in with the lore of the animango (what little there is any way).
as much as i find naruto distasteful now, i still know far too much about its lore.

That it is, though there ARE jutsus in the lore that take a shitload of signs, they aren't mega nukes. The one they used to basically say "FUCK YOU, DEATH!" and raise every ninja that ever died in battle ever in a giant army of enslaved bullshit took a while to cast.
The game is still very much a WIP so flaws like that can be forgiven I guess.
I have the worst luck in Magical Burst. I'm startlingly close to death again, since half my base hp was knocked off in one turn.
Nevermind I have the best luck. Did max damage, and it was doubled from being aimed at a weakspot. :v:

And now you gained a self-authoring magic book that changes as shit happens (and which at its latest page has given you a grand ol' page-wide ;) face) and a moderately creepy looking red eyeball with pencil lines for arms and legs as a new pet.
My commision from MakoSkyDub got finished, here it is after I touched the face up a bit using his original sketch:

The problem with making a nuke sized jutsu is that it will catch you in the blast as well.

No problem, you can give it crazy long range too.

I was wondering whether you popped the sketch on there or if you redrew the outline yourself.. :v:
Also trannyalert your mate got on to me after all (maybe you knew that) and it looks like I'll be doing a few pieces for him. Cheers for the referral!
