I want to make something that has some good puzzles in it and isn't completely focused on killing monsters room by room.

Maybe design some sort of citadel or superprison she needs to escape from/break into as part of the quest. Make sure to design all the details before hand (cells, rafters, natural air ducts, barracks, guard patrol paths) and give her player a loose layout of the area from an NPC before she is sent in - then you can throw in the wildcard of the new devilish thing the guards installed since the info was gathered.

[editline]22nd February 2014[/editline] who has an int 7 char 18 catgirl maid who's a bundle of adorableness. or not, your choice.

I'm not sure how she would feel about it though. So I just kinda got thrown into being a DM/GM for a Shadowrun game since I was talking to my friends about it (same ones that I am playing D&D with) and they said it sounded awesome and we should play it. They then said I should try DMing it since I had a lot more knowledge of it than they did. Which is only kinda true because I read through the rule book a lot, though that doesn't make me a good DM/GM (whatever?) and I'm kinda nervous. I'm capable of being creative and making up things on the spot won't be hard for me either, but I'm not worried about the story aspect of it, I'm more worried about the execution of the game, what all do I really need to be an efficient DM/GM?

Just ran the weekly Only War campaign with my group. I won't go into great detail unless asked, as most people skim the larger posts, but it kinda ended up like 'Shadow of the Colossus' meets 'Katamari Damacy'.
what all do I really need to be an efficient DM/GM?
There's entire sagas worth of text to answer that. Google can do wonders for getting general ideas and core concepts from others asking the same questions in times past. As mentioned in this thread, you should ask your players what they want from the game first.

Exalted: Session #2
Having figured out about the two other fallen stars in Black Cliff and Ironfall, the group go on Wolf's airship and started sailing for Black Cliff, noticing a man in blue armor as they set sail away from Icehome. They arrived about 22 hours later, around 5 PM. Shortly after docking, Cro'kiri(Hats) ran up and greeted them. After a bit of talking, they figured out through collective knowledge that another star had fallen on the house of the owner of a popular local tavern, and that the bar's business had started to drop since then. Walking to the tavern, since they had no idea where the owner lived, they noticed a man passing them on the street with no shadow who looked extremely tired. Cloud started following him, and determined he was otherwise normal before returning to the rest of the group. Arriving at the tavern, which had a number of patrons that would be decent, were it a lesser-known place, but was unusually low for the Leaden Blade, they noticed a few more people among the 40 or so within who had no shadows, most of them looking tired as hell. Striking up a conversation with the barman, they asked him about the shadows and about the star that fell on the owner's house, at which point they were directed to the owner himself, Jossa Moonseer, as he stepped out of his office to head home for the night. Cro'kiri preempted him, though, and made his way over to redirect him toward Lioness. Asking a few questions, they learned that the Moonseer family was awoken suddenly by a loud crash about an hour after the tavern usually closes for the night, and when Jossa went to go check the noise out, he found a hole in the ceiling of his son's room and nothing but a crater within. He also mentioned that his son, Silas, had been away from home, and they hadn't heard from him in about a month. Along with that, he mentioned the absence of a common patron at the tavern: A man named Cayd, who was usually present from the time the tavern opened to the time it closed, who hadn't been seen since the night the star fell. Wolf realized, with that collection of clues, that Cayd was the dead god they were looking for. The group then went back to looking in to the people-sans-shadows, with Cloud asking a woman at the bar who's shadow was missing what she knew. She hadn't even noticed her shadow was missing, and she was too tired to be of much actual help. Wolf also noticed a man near the back corner of the bar, who's shadow was missing but, unlike the others, didn't seem to be too tired. He invited that man outside, at which point he mentioned the lack of shadow to him and asked him how long it had been gone. He hadn't even noticed it was gone until it was mentioned, but he was sure he'd had it when he woke up that morning. Cloud also brought the woman outside, and they determined that the only commonality between the two people was that they both visited the Leaden Blade. Crimson realized from among some other details they got that they were likely dealing with a Bisclavaret, a type of demon also referred to as a shadow eater, who was likely able to enter Creation the day before Cayd died when some trained wolves turned on the men who trained them and killed them. Heading back in to the tavern, Lioness activated Hellscry Chakra and noticed a man sitting in the very back corner of the building, wearing very shabby clothing and seeming to be simply enjoying the presence of everyone else within the tavern. Walking over and sitting down, she was formally greeted and acknowledged as a Green Sun Prince. Talking with the demon, she learned he'd arrived the day before Cayd died, but hadn't found the tavern until about an hour before the star landed; though he did mention that shortly after he found the place he noticed a young man walking out of it, alone. Lioness made her wishes, that the demon leave the city and find another place to steal shadows from, known, and he agreed to do it. It's not every day you get orders from one of Cecelyne's chosen, after all. At that point, the rest of the group was entering the bar, and all heard Lioness's fairwell to the demon, "I hope you can run fast, Shadow Eater." At that, with a chunk of the crowd having already fled the building due to Wolf yelling something about demons, Crimson pulled a walnut from his robe and used his sling to fling it at the bisclavaret, then Amber touhou'd the shit out of him. He fell down, bleeding and full of holes, then disappeared. It was at that point that the group realized the barman was the only person still in the tavern, everyone else having fled after the mention of demons. He was crouched behind the bar, cowering after hearing someone mention demons, followed by lightning strikes and screams of pain. They assured him someone just got struck by a lightning bolt, then left. Figuring they'd found all there was to find at the Leaden Blade, and indeed, in Black Cliff altogether, they headed back to the Chinook and started sailing toward Ironfall. About halfway there, as they were ~45 miles from Icehome, they noticed a star falling down to the city.
Pictured: Amber touhouing the demon. [editline]23rd February 2014[/editline] Oh and by the way, if you've never played Star Wars: Edge of the Empire, I highly recommend it. Basically Star Wars minus Jedi, so you guys are a bunch of outlaws doing illegal shit just for profit. Plus the dice mechanic is ace.
I wish I had people irl to play all the shit. Just glad there's ways to play it online else I'd be sat here playing 5 characters and DMing on my own.
Arent there more than just... you know... advantages on the yellow dice?
Not for Antary there aren't.
You haven't played Edge of the Empire until you've rolled 10+ advantages and no successes.
You haven't played Edge of the Empire until you've rolled 10+ advantages and no successes.
I guess everyone in our group has really played the game then.
You haven't played Edge of the Empire until you've rolled 10+ advantages and no successes.
I can't stop playing Edge of the Empire.
You haven't played Edge of the Empire until you've rolled 10+ advantages and no successes.
Thats the sickest thing ever. I've done that with my players and I basically said. "You miss, but you shoot a single bolt in the metal, and cause the ceiling to collapse on everyone." Which is why I fucking love the system.
A whole stealth thing seems pretty sweet. I'm not sure how she would feel about it though.
I asked her what kind of stuff she wants, and she wants a bit of everything (killing, stealth, puzzles, etc). I would like to be able to do something that only takes a day. I kind of have something in mind. Anyway, how many minions would I use against a level 1 player in an encounter? Would a level 1 monster and a couple minions be too much for an encounter? And what kind of things should I look for in a boss against a solo player?
Yeah but that's assuming that your GM is letting you use advantages for shit rather than ignoring them.
Isnt that kind of... y'know... the point of the system? Advantages and disadvantages are one of the best mechanics in recent memory, because it gives the GM storytelling tools integrated into the mechanics. Super rad... if you use them.
Well the idea in Edge is that the players are supposed to use the advantages to do something they and the gm agree on, rather than the gm just deciding what they do on his own.
Eh, not really, you can play it out either way. I think it's more fun if the GM decides, because that way the player can't direct chance to his favour, and it feels more natural. Take for example, ricochet blaster fire, why would the player get to decide what that blaster fire does? Advantages should be out of the players hands, it's less work for everyone and it makes the games a little more exciting. If you're playing Edge anytime soon, try it out that way, at least for one session.
