I am starting a campaign with some of my firends, it is thier first time. Any tips for keeping them engaged in the game, or idéers for the adventure?
Focus more on making the game fun for everyone rather than following the rules to the letter. Fudge rolls now and then and just let things happen because they sound fucking cool, even if it seems implausible. You might be directing but your players are the stars of the show - make them feel like it. I generally like to start campaigns with the players being talked down to by fellow npcs and then watch as the players get to smugly rub it back in their faces later as they accomplish nigh-impossible tasks and earn their respect. Just make the game satisfying to play for all, give everyone some time in the limelight, and don't, for the love of god, make a GMPC. If you can do that, you ought to qualify for your 'Good GM' license and they should be sure to stick around.
Also I'm looking for an experienced Shadowrun player to join our soon to be group. We got all the people we need. I just would prefer a player who knew the system so I can refer to them incase I get anything wrong, it would help everyone out. Playing GMT on Sundays.

I'd love to join, if I can make it to the time you decide on.

Starting in 4-5 weeks due to the DnD session finishing soon.

We can ask everyone when the time comes. Add me on Skype - Pruneyboy and we will talk the business
Would you allow spectators?
I don't see why not. Still a while off from starting tho, but add me and I'll be sure to tell you.
Savage Worlds! Look up Deadlands Noir and the Horror Companion. Both I think, combined, will greatly help with what you're hoping for.
I was thinking that, but Savage worlds is too pulpy, which is good for a lot of stuff, but I want this to be a hard-boiled detective story, where they have to use their wits instead of their brawn or firearms.
I'm setting up my first ever character with the help of some youtube videos and this site http://dnd3rd.sourceforge.net How is this so far for a bard? [t]http://i.imgur.com/8dz793n.jpg?1[/t] I think all i've got left to do is magic...
You have soap; good man.
You have rope; good man.
My bards name is Lance Coxswain, and our party is now officially called "Lance Coxswain & the Dixie Chicks"

I was vetoed pretty hard.
You know that Only War group I was talking about? Well, I wasn't feeling much interest from the group, so I decided I wanted to transfer over to Deathwatch. Initially people seemed pretty stoked about it, everyone made their character sheets. Then 3 people dropped out. I got another guy to join, but it sorta sucks that they dropped out without giving it a chance. So as it turns out, they decided on playing Only War again, with one of the guys that dropped out GM'ing. Well I didn't expect that, but okay, I'll try joining as a player. Except now, the guy who is GM'ing isn't letting me join. Worst of all, they're using all the same characters and NPC's that I made up. I need to find better friends. TL;DR, GM'ing a game of Only War, group disbands, group gets back together without me, using my world.
So I guess I'm reluctantly joining a game of Dark Heresy now. All of my games of WH40k RPG, regardless of whether it was Deathwatch or Rogue Trader or whatever, never ended well. I'm going to try playing as a Sister of Battle, partly for the cool powers they have and partly because they're my second favorite group in WH40k despite not knowing a lot about them or the universe. I'm gonna try not acting like a Lawful Stupid/completely unreasonable zealot who fucks up party plans by going in heads first. I've been told that apparently 100% of all Sisters of Battle are like this, no exceptions. Yeah fuck that

So I've settled on a Prison Break theme for my one-player adventure. I sort of come up with the idea of having the player break out of their jail cell to retrieve their equipment from an armory, and then making their way back to their jail cell where there are some loose bricks that leads to a cave-like area. The cave like area would have stuff like rats and spiders the player has to fight. I might lead the cave up to some large spider-queen as a boss that's blocking the exit.
Sounds like the start of Oblivion or Skyrim.
Well she does really like playing Skyrim :v: Also, I might bump up her starting level so I have a bit more flexibility on designing encounters.

Two guys in the party plays the miniatures game a lot and are two of the people insisting on being overzealous about everything. The rest aren't particularly worried, and the GM is new-ish to the setting himself, so he doesn't mind one way or the other. I think I should define what I want to be a bit more: enemies of the Imperium are going down. Period. Mercy for traitors, xenos and heretics is an alien concept to this character. If that was any different then playing as a SoB is pointless. I just don't want to be the dumb zealot paladin who lacks basic critical thinking skills, especially in a game that is as much about intrigue and investigation as it is about combat. The captive Chaos cultist will be burned alive, eventually, but if he has any important information he can share (willingly or not) then it be wise not to try killing him before that happens. Honestly I guess we'll see. I know everyone in the group personally except for the two naysayers, and overall the two don't seem to be really bad people.

You'd probably really like playing an Arbie. Basically allows you to do exactly what you said while also having the excuse to beat down on street thugs because you are the law
I want to get back into a WH40k game. The DH game I was in was some of the most fun I had.
I'm new to Pen and Paper games, really interested in the SciFi ones, especially Star Wars! I've found a group that plays once every two weeks, but I want to play more often.. There isn't anymore non-cringey SWRPG groups that I can find in my area so I'm thinking of starting my own and recruiting others into it so I can choose who joins rather than have a bunch of screaming manchildren in my apartment and my non-nerd girlfriend looking at me like I'm crazy. Is there any good resource materials for learning how to be a gamemaster from a newbie? I've been reading the Core book, but it sort of assumes you already know how to play Pen and Paper RPGs.

Granted, in your case that doesn't seem to be an easy proposition, but the simple matter is, read the rules for the game as a player, get them down as best you can, then break into the GM supplements/sections, as they usually assume you're entering from the position of a player who wants to GM. As for general GMing stuff, I'd just say the most important thing is to know what your players want from the game, and build around that. Like, if they want to run and gun and loot, don't repeatedly throw social situations at them and that sort of stuff (Save that for when you want to catch them off-guard). Beyond that, it's basically just a matter of making sure everyone is having fun and not being a killjoy unless it's necessary to keep the game from bogging down (Like, if a player wants to do something that's not strictly covered in the rules, don't just say no just because it's not there, and maybe try to accommodate them if it wouldn't take too much time). Although of course, on the flip side you also need to know where there is a line that definitively cannot be crossed (although this is more often for game-breaking exploits of rules and player drama) I haven't really GMed a ton of games, but at least in my experience, it's much easier to tell the story you want and let everyone have fun when you're working with the players and not acting as if the game itself is a conflict. Like, you let the players try to do what they want most of the time, and they'll tend towards returning the courtesy Beyond that, there's a whole art to GMing and all that but seriously we'd be here all night if we went into everything involved in that tl;dr, know your players, remember that it's just a game, and remember that end of the day you have the authority also, this is probably just me, but I think one of the best general learning experiences for me for GMing and just roleplay in general was reading through Darths and Droids. TVtropes as well is great if you're looking for methods to make stories come together.

[editline]26th February 2014[/editline] that said, i fucking love star wars. i've been thinking of trying to translate the KOTOR mechanics directly to paper, rather than having one based on it like the one released in 07.
